I held off from watching Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for ages because I assumed that it was a lame Marvel cash-in, but it turned out to be the best of the recent MCU movies for me. Tony Leung is great in it.

I'm hearing bad things about the new Ant-Man movie.

I've not really enjoyed any of the ant-man films. I'll wait til it's on sky to reluctantly watch it

Saw Ant-Man yesterday. It's fine. A silly romp from the lighter end of the Marvel offerings, but Jonathan Majors is a bloody good actor.

What's good is my son is now old enough to sit through the whole movie in the cinema, so we can share it as a family.

Marvel Stans and whinging comic gatekeepers can get to fuck, too. Who cares if it's not accurate to the original origin of this or that? At this point the MCU is its own interpretation of the source material. It's not like every character hasn't had at least one retcon or total reinterpretation in another way (e.g. Ultimates) in the comics themselves. Captain America originally came out of the ice in 1964 and Thor turned into a human if he wasn't holding his hammer again within 60 seconds of chucking it at someone.

Have we seen Alatriste? I didn’t realize Viggo was fully fluent in Spanish (read that he was raised in Arg).

Set during the 80 Years War, an epic drama of intrigue and war, I don’t think I’ve seen as much stabbing and throat cutting in anything as I have this!

It'd be nice to see more from these conflicts on a bigger budget. One or two Eng Civ War films, the Dutch film Admiral, Last Valley with Michael Caine are all I can think of from the late 1500s to mid 1600s that aren't about pirates or Liz.

Which? The Last Valley? It's a James Clavell project, not very large in scope as it mostly focuses on a secluded valley during the 30 Years War.

Decided to watch Boyhood. Meh. There's something to be said about the technical achievment of stitching together pieces filmed intermittently over a period of 10 years or whatever it was, but it was a pretty aimless film devoid of narrative other than 'boy gradually grows and hits regular milestones'

I don't mind a film that doesn't really have a plot, but in that case the characters need to be a lot more engaging than I felt the cast of Boyhood were. Jim Jarmusch can be a bit variable, but I thought The Only Lovers Left Alive was pretty sound for a film with a flimsy narrative. It helps to have the likes of Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska on board, all of whom have more charisma in their little fingers than someone like Patricia Arquette.

I think part of the regard for it is it's a sequel that's better than the first one. This doesn't happen often.

Yes, I hadn't seen it until last night and yes, it's a classic of the genre. Lots of inventive elbowing people in the head.

Not that I've seen it, but I gather it has the whole multi-dimension thing going on and it released at the same time the most recent Dr. Strange film was covering similar ground. A lot of critics seemed to be falling over themselves to make comparisons and sneer at the latter, holding up the former as an indie film doing a topic better than the mighty House of Mouse. Marvel films are on a popularity dip and there's a bunch of industry types ready and waiting to put the boot in. If nothing else, the two so often being mentioned together has vastly inflated the profile of Everything.

Nah, EEAAO is legitimately fantastic. It's wildly imaginative, explores the multiverse concept in a number of ways, takes a lot of risks, does actually make sense and is very well directed, and is both funny and genuinely heartfelt. It's actually about something.

People raved about it because it's an excellent film that never stops surprising you. Dr Strange 2 just provided a handy benchmark to compare it against.

I'm always drawn towards films that stay with you for days afterwards and that one really did. Also thought The Quiet Girl was superb and good to see it get the awards nominations.

Totally agree with you on the Quiet Girl as well. The whole cinema was 'I'm not crying. You are crying'. Read a review that said they are beautiful companion films and I think that's a good analysis

It's a good way of looking at it. Both fit together well.

In a year where Banshees will get most of the plaudits from an Irish pov (I thought it was decent enough), The Quiet Girl is the one that really moved me and appreciate the power of cinema.

Tried to watch The Independent last night, fucking awful. Gave up after persevering for 45 mins. A decent cast could have a poorly written and badly directed pile of dross.

All quiet on Western front

It's especially relevant now with the slaughter happening in the East but this is a paint by numbers rendition of the story. Acting is good and it looks great but there's something not quite gelling here.

Rewatched Green Room. Get's slightly silly towards the end but Holy moly the whole film is intense. At least this time I knew which bits to turn down the sound for.

Great little flick, the only real issue is I think they made the injury to Yelchin's wrist too severe given some of what he goes on to do.

As a fan of hardcore I never thought I'd see it being so central to a film.

Yeh I think he'd be vomiting and passed out from shock after that.
Speaking of body horror, The Company of Wolves popped into my head for some reason so had a watch. Pretty great visually; apparently Neil Jordan the director worked under John Boorman on Excalibur and you can definitely see the influence.

Just saw a trailer for a film called Ghosted with Ana de Armas and Chris Evans, some sort of Action romcom nonsense, so whatever about it specifically, but I wonder what sort of odds you'd have had early in her career that she'd become an action heroine. Wee slip of a thing whocut her teeth in dramatic stuff, she's not the most obvious choice. However, with Bond and The Gray Man under her belt plus the abovementioned and a John Wick spin off movie on the way, a bona fide action star she has become.

I will watch anything with her in - she's ridiculously hot

It's really quite good. Animation is fantastic and the story is excellent. Teeny bit mawkish at the end but you can forgive it that. Not really a kids filum.

Quite "woke" so if Mussolini being presented in a negative light upsets you, give this one a miss.

Heat is getting a sequel.
Don't know about this. Mann hasn't made a decent filum in years.

Saw this last night, standard formulated stuff but still a decent watch. Thought she was very good and believable in action role, seemed to be almost John Wick levels of kill count

My wife wanted us to go see this so we went the other day. It's a good laugh... not really my choice of cinema visits ($75 for two with popcorn, drinks and one choc top which I will not forego as part of my movie experience) but it's a light hearted romp. She's Thai and loves a decent action movie. She took me to see one of the Fast and Furious movies in Thailand and it was dubbed so I was the only person in the theatre not getting the dialogue. Hilarious for everyone else. She's got us lined up for the next one of those when it gets here. Domestic harmony is worth the price. I've just got to try and work out whether she'll be able to follow Dune II when that opens in 6 months.
