Seeing Taylor batting like this is making me a little emotional. One of the finest batters in NZ history and he is reduced to what we are seeing now.

*sigh*

Good solid test batting spell. Not the speediest of scorers. But just picking off the runs nicely

Does England take the new ball then, if this one is a hand grenade?

This is pleasant news to wake up to, despite learning that Young is benefiting from a dropped dolly.

Talk about a tough crowd!
Just to give this a bit of context, Boucher was accused of selecting too many players from the Titans and ignoring players like Verreynne who plays for the Cape Cobras.

Proteas making a mockery of the rankings against the Windies who are ranked as the superior side.

This game may very likely not go into the third day

And, as I type that, Verreynne shells a catch.

Just rewatching that Broad moan.

If it had of been that it was sent upstairs without a soft signal, would the result have been any different? Presumably upstairs it would have deemed either it bounced or inconclusive and batter gets benefit of doubt.

Having said that, I do agree that the soft signal is pointless when umpire giving onfield decision from 40 yards away. What’s the point if it’s going to be referred.
It’s not like rugby where the ref can often see angles from a close position replays don’t show.

Slightly biased being a kiwi but I thought it wasn’t out. It was very close but there wasn’t any clear hand or finger underneath that ball as it hit the ground.

As for the soft signal, you take that away and you’re taking the umpires out of the game. Also the referral is whether there is clear evidence to overturn that decision. Umpires make an initial call on it and then it goes to check if that is correct.

How is it taking them out of the game? They choose to refer it, or not.

When they no longer have any input into the decision other than “eh, ask the bloke with the telly”.

He should have got his fifty but it was called leg byes despite a decent edge, so he snacks the next ball to the fence.

Why should the umpire be in the game?

He's there to officiate; he doesn't actually take part. Or he shouldn't, at any rate.

Thought it was pretty clearly out with fingers under the ball even with the foreshortening effect on TV. Don't think it's a big surprise that Doull thought so too, as well as a lot of players from other teams on Twitter. But hey, bad decisions happen.

Anyway, good article about the nonsense that is English cricket: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/ ... es-cricket

Also mentions how the first thing Silverwood did with Archer was make him bowl 42 overs in an innings, and under Silverwood he's averaging 43 with the ball...

He’s got a good point about the vagueness and half hearted approach in this series. While NZ are number one in the rankings they are nowhere near the best team in the world. What sort of statement would it have been for England if they walked out with an absolute swagger and treated NZ with disdain. Smash them at every turn and walk out of the series pointing at Aus saying you’re next.

Instead they’ve not really pushed anything. As the article says, it’s a warm up match/net session approach.

Too little too late. Been comfortably outbowled by Stone in this innings, who'd had have four wickets if not for appalling catching. Wood was so shit yesterday but the media spent ages finding excuses for him.

Yup. The majority of our batting lineup shouldn't be playing Test cricket at this stage. But that's all we have now, thanks to the murdering of our domestic cricket. A bunch of guys with awful techniques and/or a terrible approach to long form cricket.

They’re playing at balls they could be leaving. It’s poor application and technique. It’s day three, you’re behind. You don’t have to be wafting outside off 10 balls into your innings.

County cricket is sidelined these days, the guys grow up playing t20 and 50 over stuff, and when they do play 4 day games most of the time it's either on a road or in situations where every ball has your name on it so may as well thrash it

Seem to have plenty of batsmen who look great when in form against county bowling attacks, but hardly any who have genuine class. Result: horrible batting ensues

Vast majority of county attacks are medium pacers.

All about Steve: Win the toss, bat first and lose a Test match and series in 3 days at home in warm sunny conditions is "impressive", even by England's recent standards.
Well we still have 4 wickets remaining, so that might be a bit premature ( though who knows... )
Does this make it more understandable why they opted against the chase last week?

I'd say so.
