We've got good power supply here boet

But seriously, I don't know any African country with power cuts like SA at the moment. Even those with it bad all have generators so you don't notice it as much.
It's shocking. You have no clue how stressful it is following a load shedding schedule so that your pool pump, lawn mower, steam iron etc doesn't kick on during load shedding times.
Because then it trips the inverter. We took our pool pump off the timer. Now we have to do it manually during Eskom hours.....so inconvenient.

The members re-elected him because they know he can do stuff-all about any of them being corrupt.
Nah, that doesn't check out. The measure is "compared to what", the corrupt are under more pressure now than they've ever been, it's still not enough but they actually have to go through investigations now and provide testimonies under oath and all the rest of it. They all hate Ramaphosa because of this. But they all have to support Ramaphosa because there's no one else that's electable in the ANC, there was polling done by the ANC before the 2019 election that put them below 40% without Ramaphosa. The same dynamic had a lot to do with why Zuma was removed.

The ANC get weaker every election. Just make sure you're voting and you've done everything you can to get everyone else you know voting. You don't need to do anything else, less than 25% of adults are voting ANC now, just convincing people to vote will likely mean they're voting against the ANC.

The problem starts here. Our inverter is only 2.5kva. It has automatic switchover. So you don't realize it's on until you overload it and trip it. Then everything gets shut down. The pool pump draws 1.5kw alone. That trips the system on startup because the pump draws more current on start up. Not sure on pumps but I estimate around 4.5 kw on startup. At a ratio of 3 times working current. If the domestic is still ironing that trips the system. That's 2 kw straight draining the batteries.
I have already replaced 2 hard drives on our laptops. Admittedly those were old generation and not solid state and around 7 years old. So probably due. But this constant load shedding doesn't help. My amplifier which is old generation keeps blowing capacitors. So we never use it anymore because its disconnected waiting for load shedding to end. So it is really really frustrating. I have a laptop in our main lounge which is old. Hard drive just went this week. I just use it for streaming so don't need anything else. Our techie who handles all our maintenance on our laptops, servers , my wifes POS etc. Fitted a 250 gig solid state hard drive and an extra 2mb memory. It was a clean unit when I got it back........

Except, when I went to fetch it, he showed me a streaming service he does the remote set up for in our area.
IPTV. ....
He went through what it has with me whilst I was at his house collecting. It cost 250 for setup, and it's remote. So if like me you enjoy watching the little pointer moving around the screen by itself, opening tabs etc. Thats how it happens. That's his fee. And then 250 a month for streaming. There is a huge Live TV button on the main page. Hit that and then look for Live rugby. No more pop ups and malicious kak on your laptop. Just watching the rugby like watching DSTV.
Look, I haven't explored more yet. But theres Movies, Series, catchup you can click on. Going to try them now. Under Series you get a huge choice. Including Netflix, Disney, Apple. So you can get rid of those services immediately. It's all in one. At just 250 a month. Bargain really.
Only problem. It's only 1 device. So can't share to other devices.
Other than that, it's my Xmas gift to myself and the rest can carry on.

Back yesterday from a whirlwind Wilderness stay. Place was smack in the middle of Wilderness and Sedgefield. In the 5 days we did beach every day, quadbiking, my eldest did paragliding off Sedgefield mountain, the youngest joined the eldest to do the Knysna zipline course . 4 zipline sections. The highest in Africa. 9 years was at the minimum requirement. A river cruise and Cango caves. We tried to do at least 2 to 3 activities a day as we had 2 days of rain. ( Cango on the 1 rain day ). Man I love that area. The water was warm so kids would go 5 hours swimming in a session.
We ate out all meals . Top rated was Joplins. Excellent service and food and Second best milkshake in the area.. Second was Salenas, my hake was so fresh I could peel the flakes apart. Best brunch was the Island Cafe in Knysna, what a relief to not have farmhouse, or your standard breakfast but rather outstanding poached eggs with salmon. Followed by Coral reef by the Knysna zipline. Coral reef had the best milkshake by a mile. It was huge, tasty and littered with sweets and bubble gum which made it an experience. Second best milkshake was Joplins Followed by Jamwich. We are definitely booking for our next holiday in a year's time. Still so much we want to do in that area, but want a pozie on the river in Wilderness so you can jump off the bank into the river.

We did a couple of nights in the Masai Mara. Absolutely incredible, photos do it no justice. Incredible wildlife day and night, and without the migration the park was quiet.

We then did a couple of nights at Lake Naivasha on the way back. Camping very, very close to hippos.

Amazing aerial footage of killer whales hunting white sharks off Mossel Bay. There are two orcas nicknamed Port and Starboard who are thought to be the main culprits. They eat the liver which can weight up to 200kg.

Yo, saffas - was there over Xmas and have to say it’s the first trip ever where you could really feel the doom and gloom about SA.
The load shedding
Water cut off
Don’t drink from the taps as they connected the sewer and freshwater pipes up by mistake in the area
Don’t swim in the sea as the ecoli is about 10,000 higher than normal (amazingly this warning got removed for to Toti beach so the vaailes could get a nice dip)
40R for a beer when out
Seeing black guards beat the living crap out of another black guy who was nicking some metal, this was in the afternoon on a suburban street

Yes, up to 4 hours at a time, that does not include the rest of the day. Our little town had 2 x 4hrs + 1 x 2hrs in one day on numerous days now. Life goes on, until it doesn't and people lose their businesses or jobs. How you can say we should get used to it is beyond me.

I went to London last year and to see the contrast with my previous visit was quite depressing. Even nice areas like High Street Ken and Oxford Street were full of homeless people, many shops boarded up, and the people just seemed grey and depressed. The local Sainsbury's also became noticeably more downmarket.
I paid 6.5 quid for a beer in a pub and the tap water still taste so awful it's undrinkable. Fortunately, I missed all the strikes that are now going on.

Still, Yeeb is right about South Africa. Im so looking forward to leave.

Load shedding is purely a political issue, fixing it would mean ending corrupt criminal activity surrounding the coal industry and defeating unionised Eskom workers. These groups are all part of the ANC constituency. The quickest way to do that is by a mass rollout of renewables which would solve a lot of the problem without directly having to fight the ANC. But that hasn't happened because everyone that's getting corrupt gains out of coal would then be out of pocket, because they cannot steal sunshine/wind/gravity. If the ANC could work out how to corruptly benefit from renewables SA would be rammed with the stuff, but they cannot.

Coal will be non-viable as a power source soon, because a carbon tax will start being loaded into import duties in most developed economies (a stealth tariff barrier).

It's not an engineering issues, it's all politics. Which means the only way out is to vote the ANC out of office and hope they don't try anything crazy. Could happen next year.

The coal gets robbed out of the coal trucks and exported, the stuff going to the plants in its place is lower grade ... or straight up rubble.

And this is just the most egregious example. The contracts to supply the coal are also corrupt. As are the construction and maintenance contracts at the plants. And on and on.

My call ...

ANC are polling quite a few points below 50% now. The nightmare coalition of ANC/EFF, is possible on current polling (both together are over 50%) it looks the most likely outcome. That would lead to even more chaos, some parts of SA would become unliveable. Places that will hang on: Western Cape, Joburg western/northern/eastern suburbs, Pretoria eastern suburbs. Anywhere else will be struggling if they don't have a DA led metro and provincial government (Gauteng is highly likely to go DA led coalition in 2024).

This will get so bad that local governments which aren't ANC run will be forced to take over national functions when they can. A bit like how CT produces some of it's own power (from hydro), which reduces load shedding in CT. Areas that have a full stack of ANC rule through metro/province/national, will not get that mitigation.

Then it's just 5 more years of madness and waiting for the ANC's final implosion, whenever that happens.

Don’t be a nob, it was merely an example of something that has doubled in price in a very short space of time, and one that I am acquainted with buying there.
Makes the extra quid on a ping here seem relatively acceptable (not inc Wetherspoons )

Not having power or water for hours at time , just isn’t normal or remotely acceptable. Honkies doubling up on solar , invertors , jojo tanks and generators - but really would be easier to just go to another country.
