Just a wonderful time to be a NZ cricket supporter.
Respected around the world for the skill we play with but also the way we play the game.
Competitive in all 3 formats.
Genuine world class players.
Just need to ride this as long as we can.

Unlike the golden era with Paddles and Crowe, this team does not rely nearly as heavily on one or two players.

Nasser had a great rant yesterday where he essentially said the same thing as me - I mean, it was pretty obvious, not claiming any great insight, but it was wonderful to see someone with some reach actually getting angry about it.
Dobell wrote an excellent piece, too:

Thanks for that
I dropped in to ask if we were going to get the customary article about how England doesn't play enough, of the long format, & focuses on the short format game; & I guess I got my answer !
Is it getting to the point now, where, young players who are in the mix; are going to self-select for the sexy, & financially lucrative short formats; & will only be dragged, kicking & screaming into the test side ?

We're past that point already I think. Test cricket does mean decent money for these guys if they're not good enough for anything beyond domestic franchise cricket.

I'm rubbish at this sort of thing, but could someone kindly start a Test Championship Final official match fred. One of our many regular Indian posters, perhaps?

Not convinced there have been many poorer England batting lineups than the ones we've put out over the last year or so. Root the only player of any quality there and if he fails we're stuffed.

How much of this kind of batting collapse is down to coaching or player application?
I thought Vaughan was correct when he said that batters don't need to be technically perfect. But they do have to be able to modify their game depending on conditions. He also mentioned that the best example of that was Ross Taylors struggles at the start of his innings. All at sea, couldn't pick the line, the movement, the pace out of the hand or off the pitch. But he used his experience to modify what he was doing and change the way he played.
Why can't English batters do this - or why do they at the very least struggle to do this? And I don't know if the lack of test experience covers them that well - surely during the domestic season they are required to modify their batting just as much? Has the attack attack attack mindset messed up the player's minds?
Don't get me wrong - I love a good English batting collapse - but surely they have enough data to figure out a way of limiting it?

Well, that puts an end to the debate over whether our spinner will be Santner or Patel.

West Indies knocked over for 149 after Mulder join the party.
Put into perspective de Kock and Edgar's batting effort.

"A keg ball is when you buy a round of drinks for the team. We called a couple this game. I called one the first ball of this game, so unlucky me, but it's good for the team," Mulder explained. "It brings a little bit of spirit. When you feel your x-factor coming through and your instinct tells you there's going to be a wicket, or something is going to happen, that's when you call a keg ball. There were three or four in this innings and a couple in the last innings."

Olly Stone out for the season with a stress fracture (again). Sadly I think that's it for his chances of a real international career. A real shame, especially given how he showed his worth by out bowling Wood in the last Test. Have to hope Archer comes back fine and Wood stays fit, and that Silverwood picks a fucking spinner to give these guys a chance.

Wood stays fit?! What are the odds of that for more than two consecutive tests?

South Africa doing their best to let the Windies in:
59 for six in the second innings.
Mind you, they are 208 ahead, and the wicket doesn't look as flat as the commentators are claiming, so I don't think the game belongs to the Windies just yet.

It's good to see.
He does look like he knows how to handle a bat so it's pleasing to see him actually pick up some runs.
23 off 29.
Make that 29 off 31.
Greets nelson (111 for 7) with a sumptuous drive off a full toss for four.

Jesus.
Rabada strikes Roach back over his head for 6.
v d Dussen and Rabada bossing the bowling now.
It looks like the Windies are going to be chasing plus 300. Which should be difficult, even if the pitch has eased up.
