Nasser had a great rant yesterday where he essentially said the same thing as me - I mean, it was pretty obvious, not claiming any great insight, but it was wonderful to see someone with some reach actually getting angry about it.

I dropped in to ask if we were going to get the customary article about how England doesn't play enough, of the long format, & focuses on the short format game; & I guess I got my answer !

Is it getting to the point now, where, young players who are in the mix; are going to self-select for the sexy, & financially lucrative short formats; & will only be dragged, kicking & screaming into the test side ?

We're past that point already I think. Test cricket does mean decent money for these guys if they're not good enough for anything beyond domestic franchise cricket.

Not convinced there have been many poorer England batting lineups than the ones we've put out over the last year or so. Root the only player of any quality there and if he fails we're stuffed.

How much of this kind of batting collapse is down to coaching or player application?

I thought Vaughan was correct when he said that batters don't need to be technically perfect. But they do have to be able to modify their game depending on conditions. He also mentioned that the best example of that was Ross Taylors struggles at the start of his innings. All at sea, couldn't pick the line, the movement, the pace out of the hand or off the pitch. But he used his experience to modify what he was doing and change the way he played.

Why can't English batters do this - or why do they at the very least struggle to do this? And I don't know if the lack of test experience covers them that well - surely during the domestic season they are required to modify their batting just as much? Has the attack attack attack mindset messed up the player's minds?

Don't get me wrong - I love a good English batting collapse - but surely they have enough data to figure out a way of limiting it?

Have to hope Archer comes back fine and Wood stays fit, and that Silverwood picks a fucking spinner to give these guys a chance.
