The City of Cape Town is gearing up to put 500MW on its grid to cover the failing national power utility Eskom and stop load shedding.

Speaking with BizNewsTv, the mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, said that there is no way for Eskom to get out of its capacity mess, and as a result, the city must resolve the problems itself.

South Africans are currently facing ongoing stage 6 power outages with no sign of reprieve on the horizon.

Eskom’s CEO, Andre de Ruyter, has acknowledged the continuous threat of stage 8 load shedding as the company exists in a fragile state of “hand to mouth”, while the company itself is currently reviewing its load shedding documents – including stages and regulations – in preparation for what liesbeyond stage 8.

The procurement of 500MW forms the final part of the Cape Town’s four-stage plan to reduce reliance on Eskom and become more energy independent.

According to the mayor, Cape Town as a whole uses about 2,200MW at peak times.

The 500MW isn’t designed to cut ties with Eskom entirely, but instead makes up for the shortfall that leads to load shedding when Eskom asks cities across the country to cut power. Power from the new project would be immediately dispatchable to households across the city.

There is a desire to cut ties with Eskom entirely, but the mayor said this would take years and significantly more investment.

Hill-Lewis said the discussions around the 500MW project are essentially finished, and more details can be expected in the coming weeks.

He added that extra-legal steps had taken place to try and fast-track the projectthrough the traditional procurement practices which tend to stall development.

Cape Town has consistently driven to shift away from an overreliance on the national power grid. Other initiatives have included:

The finalisation of 200MW from independent power producers (IPP).
Alterations to policy regarding embedded power generation, so people can generate more power than they consume, and the city would buy it from the generator.
Through the power heroes program, households that save power to free up additional capacity during peak times are offered cash incentives.
The city was also the first to announce plans to allow private and commercial solar users to deliver excess energy to the grid and get paid for it.

On 24 January, the mayor said that the city was granted an exemption from the National Treasury for a competitive bidding process regarding the local electricity grid and feeding back into it.According to the mayor, the exemption from the treasury was necessary as current legislation does not foresee a situation where cities could procure energy independently.

“The sale of excess power by homes and businesses with Small Scale Embedded Generation (SSEGs), among other generation solutions, will contribute to Cape Town’s goal of 4-stages load-shedding protection within three years,” said the mayor.

The feed-in process is expected to roll out to commercial users by the middle of 2023, while private households should be able to benefit from the system in 2024.

The Western Cape as a whole has also been putting in place plans to shift away from Eskom.

During the latest State of the Province Address (SOPA), the premier said that it had approached the provincial treasury for R1.1 billion to be put toward energy independence.

In Kenya we're a much less developed country, but our power comes from 80% renewable so supply really isn't an issue. We get a lot of powercuts, but it's mostly due to old infrastructure that is gradually being updated, or from heavy rain disrupting services.

Even water; the council supplies but when there is a shortage, there are suppliers (cartels) we can fill our tanks from at quite good prices.

Die laaitie is groot in slange in, veral ball pythons. Hy kan presies sê wat se gene is in so slang, en kan uitwerk wat mens sal kry as jy 2 slange laat broei. Ons het ma oorreed dat hy 'n slang mag aanhou (my vrou was skuitbang vir slangeso wou eerz nie. Nou is sy net so in die storie in.

Eers was dit net 'n ball python (Butter Pastel), toe kom die Leopard Gecko, en toe 2 Tenricks. Nou het al 3 van ons planne om nog diere te koop. Ek soek 'n Iguana, Reticulated Python en nog ball pythons. My seun soek 'n Red Tail Boa en oo, nog ball pythons. Ons beplan om volgende jaar 'n besigheid te begim om ball pythons te teel, eers net vir 'n inkomste vir hom, wat hopelik 'n groot besigheid te wees wanneer hy klaar maak met skool.

Ek bly nou in Springs, oos Rand. Letterlik 500m van waar ek groot geword het. Terug in my hometown na 25 jaar!

So they caught the fuckers a week ago. Struisbaai locals even a white vrou involved. They released a list of stolen items but nothing from my stuff. They probably sold it.

Luckily I am full on back in work. It's a totally new environment compare to before lock down. Working mostly from home, sitting 8 hours a day in team zoom meetings, improving my English communicating with Global people from India, UK and US. My favorite is a nice lady from Ireland supporting Munster. We have our daily rugby conversation.

Awesome. Great dat jy en ma hom so ondersteun. My jongste seun studeerr nature conservation. Hy is ook diere bevok van n spinnekop tot n haai. Hy het my so beinvloed dat ek sommer die donner in raak as ek n platvgetrapte skilpad in die pad sien en hier is baie skilpaaie. Hy het by die local NSRI aangesluit, dit was n goeie besluit en wil volgende jaar anti poaching doen.

Ek is maar skrikkerig vir slange. Hulle het eendag hier n boomslang by my huis kom vang. Hier is baie slange. My Kat dra hulle in die huis Dan bekak ons ons eers.

Sorry to hear that Sards, I know how much effort you and especially your wife put into the place. It's heart-breaking to know that you will not be the only ones making that decision in the upcoming months.

We are fortunate. Our lease is expired. We have been waiting for the landlord to agree to our conditions to sign a new lease, and they have been avoiding making any decisions. Really giving us the run around. We could have found another premises by now. They mailed us Thursday after we contacted them that morning and said they weren't agreeing to our lease proposal and we should leave if we are unhappy. No brainer. All the tenants are fed up with the mall. They are all in discussions with the letting agents because of the state the mall is turning into.
Only problem is our staff. We will clear the shop by end of week and obviously there is termination pay for the staff but we are looking for other jobs for them. We are fairly well connected.
Load shedding is going to really hurt our industry which has already been battered. I fear for our industry going forward.
We are storing her entire shop in a storage unit. Except for the extraction which I am changing to something more load shedding friendly. That is already sold.
So we will just bide our time till the right opportunity comes along
