The Arabs have been hoovering up so much sport in recent years - second Fury-Usyk fight is in Riyadh later this month.
As far as what the purpose of this is - you do hear the term sport washing bandied about and I've been thinking about this. The West produce the lions share of top tier sportsmen and women and virtually all the sporting traditions are rooted in the West so they can't Arabize sport. Sport will always culturally be a western thing no matter how much money they throw at it. I suppose funding and hosting sporting events is a soft power instrument.

But unlike all the other sports that have sold their souls, football already is popular in Saudi and they've had a lot of success over the years before the money started pouring in

And only one country stood up to disagree, Norway. A plague on all of them.
FIFA has to be the words largest scam. Would love to know how much Infantino is going to personally make out of all of this.
One thing that did me me laugh, I suppose, is Saudi receiving the highest ever score for a bidding country. The best part was within it achieving the highest ever score for their stadia. Which haven't even been built yet.

They'll slave night and day to ensure they're built.
Well, not them.
But someone will.
