It is worth mentioning again, as I think it is the most stupid thing about Brexit imaginable.. so stupid we have to overlook it...but we invested hundreds of billions in the EU, and we walked away from all of it.

Other countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain) will feel the benefits of this massive investment..whilst we what..choke on hormone injected meat from Austealia?


Also, we got a lot of former Soviet Union nations and crappy EU nations on their feet..so we could easily trade with them etc.
We reskilled, invested and trained whole populations..
Hundreds upon hundreds of billions of investment, in money and human resources that invested in nations to build them up, so we could eventyally trade with them...that we now have just dumped in a river.

And we worry about 42 billion..
What about the other 840 billion investment, that we just said fuck it about?

He was told it is all down to supply chain breaking down and lack of lorries/drivers to deliver, apparently the supply chain is now really struggling to keep up with demand. A North East business leader who wrote to the Prime Minister a fortnight ago asking him to tackle problems caused by Brexit said he is yet to receive a reply.

James Ramsbotham, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), set out some of the issues which include a shortage of truck drivers, confusion over customs declarations and delays in transporting goods.

The North East of England has historically carried out 59% of its international trade with the EU and the chamber said it has stood out as “one of, if not the only, net-exporting region in Great Britain”.

At the time of writing the letter, Mr Ramsbotham said: “Exports are vital to the national economy.

“They are our national income. Damaging the ability of businesses who create wealth for our nation will make this country so much poorer.

“To do so when we are striving to recover from the pandemic, with all of its resulting debt, will burden this nation for decades.

“We encourage the Prime Minister to give this issue his most urgent and personal attention.”

But a fortnight later, Mr Ramsbotham has not had a reply.

He told the Guardian newspaper: “The real issue is the complete lack of strategic planning.

“From our perspective, there has been none whatsoever.”

I went to a Nandos once, shite chicken and chips. And probably cheap chicken devoid of much of the potential nutritional value. The country would be better not so much if there weren't such junk food places, but if people simply didn't want to use them.

Worth noting this is something of a Brexit issue, but it's not like there aren't countries in the EU facing similar problems, Spain especially is struggling for HGV drivers. Here I expect we might just about get this sorted with sufficient drivers numbers just in time for the job market to implode with the progression of automation

Well as someone working on automation for several years; I can tell you it's a lot harder than the Politicians think it is to automate tasks; & guess what; there's a critical shortage of automation engineers too !

U.K. Government proposed solution to the 100,000 shortage of HGV drivers… “making the lorries 2 and half metres longer may be the way forward.”

Duncan Buchanan, policy director at the RHA, said: “This will have a benefit because it will decrease the amount of lorry drivers we need. They are higher capacity, so you need fewer drivers to do the same amount of work”

However he disputed the Government’s claim that the longer lorries would take one in eight vehicles off the road, saying that most operations would not be able to use the new vehicles in their routes.

Ultimately however surely everyone recognises that basing an economy or franchise food chains on the long term exploitation of low wage foreign labour is at least politically unsustainable - it also relies on keeping areas like Eastern Europe relatively economically undeveloped so you can steal all their workers. I have seen people mocking AI and bigger lorries (ie greater productivity) but these are both areas that advanced economies will need to develop in the future.

There are a lot of variables in play in different countries; one of which is the way a lot of migrant labour had to up sticks & return to wherever home was; when economies started locking down. Germany needs Eastern European truckers just the same as the UK; but the difference is that now Germany is coming out of lockdown; they can return there; albeit slowly, as they have to secure housing etc.

I wonder if the whole semiconductor shortage; which has shutdown car production; is also screwing up new Truck production ?

Oh I'm expecting it to take quite some time. We're doing quite a lot of work on the quantum computing side of things and that looks set to change what's possible as regards automation, but that's both a long ways off and something that no political movement seems ready for or even to be thinking about

Back in the here and now we have taken back control which we seem to think only means saying no, and not we could allow ourselves to say yes when it happens to be in our interest. And that sort of thinking will ensure some the delays are extended in duration
