Cape Town – The identification of the Omicron Variant by South African scientists was excellent work, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday announcing that the country would remain on lockdown alert level 1.

“The early identification of this variant as a result of the excellent work done by our scientists in South Africa,” he said addressing the nation on Sunday night.

“The identification of Omicron coincides with a sudden rise in Covid-19 infections. This increase has been centred in Gauteng. We've seen an average of 1 600 new cases in the last seven days compared to just 500 new daily cases in the previous week and 275 new daily cases the week before that.”

On Sunday, a South Africa reported 2 858 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 961 406, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said.

The institute said that the increase represented a 9.8% positivity rate, adding that a further six Covid-19 related deaths had been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89 797.

Ramaphosa said that epidemiologists have in the past warned that a fourth wave would hit the country in December, and said that it could be true if the cases continued to rise.

“If cases continue to climb we can expect to enter the fourth wave within the next few weeks, if not sooner. This should come as no surprise as epidemiologists have told us that we should expect a fourth wave in early December,” he said.

The NICD said there were currently no unusual symptoms following infection with the B.1.1.529 variant. As with other variants, some individuals are asymptomatic.

It was named Omicron and the World Health Organization has declared it a “variant of concern

Cricket has been all we have had since our rugby is in such a mess with the URC....

Sadly that has come to an end now till next year...

Oh man......I wish........but fishing and boogie boarding......haven't done Transkei for a very very long time. Last time we were at Mboytji we had Stalkers watching us all day , moving wherever we went.....Was very uncomfortable. For the women and kids.
Which places are you thinking of stopping at.

I suspect the North coast of Natal would be prime for that.

I suspect the North coast of Natal would be prime for that.

So far I have Port St Johns, Gamtoos River and Great Fish river on the list. Mainly scratching for Bronze bream etc in the gullies and garrick and grunter in the estuaries. Also spinning with a 11 foot rod. Light stuff. I like to be more active than sitting with big baits waiting for sharks and kob. I have quite a few connections on the Wild Coast especially in mBoyti. I grew up fishing all along that stretch.

As to security concerns. I'm always strapped nowadays when fishing and with a group of mates. We know the indunas in mBoyti and have never had issues really.

My favourite rod is an 8 ft Shimano with a whippy end so you can get in a good cast but it can bend with a good fish on. I also like scratching. Big baits can tie you to a place and you cant move around. My 3 piece 14 foot doesn't get much action. Also a bitch to fit into the back of the bakkie. I have spent some good times at mBoyti. But when you have those lads hiding in the bushes along the beach watching you and probably having a good wank at the girls it became too uncomfortable. We normally stay at the lodge or camp by the estuarie. You have obviously fished off Sharks point then. Gamtoos is fantastic if you have some prawn ( which you aren't allowed to pump by the mouth ) or blood worm. Mostly juvenile grunter and Steenies which give a great fight on light tackle. We landed about 7 the one session when the tide turned and the water color started clearing. Goukama is also brilliant for that.
Unfortunately we cannot travel too far yet....Our last trip a few weekends back we didn't get to relax....just far too much stress handling stock issues etc. etc. at my wifes shop. But that really sounds like an awesome trip...my 2 boys would definitely enjoy that. Pity St Lucia is so far up the Natal coast....some great times there

That won't happen. We'll see minimal restrictions from here on in. Ramaphosa and kie know that there is zero appetite amongst the wider population for anymore kak. Take away our brannas and beaches for Christmas and there will be a revolution.
