I am willing to wager no ban on alcohol
No ban, but a tightening of the selling hours.

I'll wager you a beer 🍺 and schnapps at the German Club. The President will give us a naughty talk on Sunday.
I would like to lose this wager very much
A few Saturdays back there were rumours of an booze ban. Castle and Black Label were sold out in every store in our area by closing time. People are prepared this time. I am partial to the idea of a weekend shutdown of liquor trading. That doesn't do to much damage to the trade but will take an edge off excesses.

I think they're watching the hospitals closely. Complication caused by the latest wave should start emerging properly and any further restrictions will depend entirely on how aggressive Omicron turns out to be.

On the bright side this Christmas is going to be better than the last and hopefully the last one thats blighted by this virus.

I think it's widely accepted that the new variant is milder than Delta. Let's hope the hospitalisation rates reflect that.

I hope so but we've got a shitload of immuno-compromised people out there. Many of whom are unvaccinated. But so far its looking good.

Sien dis goedgekeur. Wanneer kan ons gaan vir die derde?
Pfizer boosters will be available to people six months after they receive their second dose, with the first people becoming eligible late this month, the South Africa health department's deputy-director general, Nicholas Crisp, told a news conference.

J&J boosters, already available to health workers in a research study, will be rolled out to the general population soon, he added.

South Africa reported more than 22,000 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a record during a fourth wave of infections driven by the Omicron variant but still below a peak of more than 26,000 daily cases during the third wave driven by the Delta variant.

Addressing the same news conference, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said there were positive signs from early hospital data showing that Omicron appears to be causing mainly mild infections.

Glenda Gray, president of the South African Medical Research Council, said there were far more unvaccinated people among current hospital admissions.

On the Pfizer vaccine, she said: "We are seeing this vaccine is maintaining effectiveness. It may be slightly reduced, but we are seeing effectiveness being maintained for hospital admissions and that is very encouraging

FFS..managed to dodge this fucker for 18 months and it finally got me.

We don’t get reports on which variant we contacted but from the sound of things it’s omicron. Pretty mild so far (touch wood) and Im sure benign double vaxxed doesn’t hurt.

Jesus it was fast. Exposed Wednesday, first symptoms Saturday but so mild I just thought was sinusitis. Didn’t feel to bad though. Went for a walk Saturday evening and a run Sunday morning.

Then had a colleague tell me in Sunday he tested positive. Sunday had some body aches (thought it was from the run). Had a fever for 3 hours in the evening which is when I started thinking okay, this isn’t sinus.

Tested positive Monday morning. Still feel fine. Just a stuffy nose and scratchy throat.

Fuck. I was planning on flying op to Gauteng for Xmas on Thursday 😡

Bloody hell, sorry to hear that. Keep us posted on how you get on. At least being doubled jabbed means the symptons are unlikely to get any worse than what you're currently going through.

New study from Discovery - Pfizer only 33% effective in preventing infection. But still 70 percent effective in preventing severe illness.

Another survey suggests that the severity of Omicron is masked by the prior infection rate of the Gauteng population which was around 72%.

Cheers guys.

More annoyed than anything and worried about the rest of the household. So far nobody else is presenting with symptoms.

Holding thumbs they are asymptomatic, but they will likely start presenting in a day or two if I’m being realistic.

Feels like there is a chunk of concrete lodged up in my nose; but as long as that stays the only symptom I’m going to consider that a blessing.

Yeah, I'm here. Thanks for checking in.
All good.
My experience was pretty mild. Severe nasal congestion was the only symptom that caused any real discomfort. Had it for 2-3 days and it cleared up.
Wife was asymptomatic throughout the whole thing.
Kiddo only had a very slight fever (36.9C) for one day. No other symptoms.

This virus is weird man.
Very grateful for a good outcome.

The cases count is confusing. Only 8500 new cases and 105 deaths. Think most don't even go for test or realize they have Rhona with this new variant.

I think many deaths that occur on the weekend they only register on Monday. 3 deaths yesterday. I read maybe 20 to 30 cases for every one registered.

Edit, from twitter

PSA. 50 of the 105 official South African Covid deaths announced last night were from North West province. Which had not reported a single new death since 25/11 (when they announced 99 new Covid deaths on one day). The data are laggy and incomplete..

Looks like my luck has run out.

Had a bit of a flu-feeling yesterday. Last night I didn't have a fever, but felt hot and uncomfortable in bed and had feverish-type dreams all night. Then woke up with some sore muscles, especially my lower back.

Did a rapid test and within 5 minutes it came back positive. Will go for a PCR test tomorrow morning, but I know the result already.

Not the Christmas I was planning for, but hey-ho.

Hope it's mild for you. I'm a bit surprised than in my extended family only my uncle has had it.

A week and a bit ago we visited at the farm and 5 days later one of the kids (8) was hospitalized and confirmed Covid. 4 days ago my youngest went pap with the same symptoms as the other kid and 38.4 degree temp and sore throat so no appetite.Visited the doc and no Covid test but antibiotics and a day and a half and he was back.....in an adorable annoying way. Eldest then went down. We are all self isolating at home. Not a bad thing.
Eldest is looking better today but the missus went pap.
It seems to be a very short lived virus with mild symptoms. Just a feeling of being super pap and no appetite and a fever.
Waiting for my turn now.

Shucks man. Good luck. Hope it stays mild and that you and your family recover well.
I also knew I had it before the test came back.

Sorry to hear that Sards. Best of luck.
From some of the testimonies I've seen lack of appetite seems to be a common symptom yes; exasperated by either a sore throat or lack or taste/smell...or both.

Omicron does seem to have a rapid recovery time thank goodness. I only really had symptoms for 3-4 days.

This virus is very contagious. Heaven knows how many people we have infected since. And those people how many have they infected etc.

But it's mild.

I have probably had it already.

If you look at the cases/hospital/death figures it's obviously that Omicron isn't a worry at all. Our deaths is still very low and that is awesome.

Still see that there are people dying after been positive again but didn't vaccinate.

In South Africa there os no reason not to vaccinate.

I have no sympathy for those who are Ill in hospital and unvaccinated. Our deaths are a bit higher but that is to be expected, no need for hysteria like in Europe.

Same. I'm ashamed to say it, but I have zero sympathy left for them.

The next stage of their obstructionism (at least in the USA) seems to be to harass the already exhausted doctors and nurses treating them into administering unproven treatments and threatening to sue them for malpractice if they don't. And then to blame the doctors and nurses for all the deaths when they don't.

I'm done with this bullshit. Time to chlorine the gene pool. These idiots are holding us back and dragging us down.

Surely medical aids will start refusing to pay for hospital treatment of unvaxxed Covid patients ?

It’s only a matter of time yes. Discovery have also indicated an increase in premiums for the unvaccinated as an option; just like they do with smokers.

Went to the doctor yesterday to get authorisation for a PCR test, and they refused as my rapid test was positive and I had symptoms. I think the medical aids here are being swamped with requests, so they're being quite strict. Reluctantly agreed, and will buy a couple of rapid tests next week to see if I'm negative yet.

Feeling pretty good today, only a sniffy nose.

I tested positive yesterday. I've been pretty shy of contact for the last couple of weeks. But this last weekend I went to a concert at a Bree Street gallery that my daughter was singing in. And then on Saturday I was at Herschel Girls School watching my niece playing in a provincial indoor hockey tournament. Lots of positives amongst my family/friend circle. Thankfully no real sickies. I have a scratchy dry throat and a bit of a cough. Had a bit of sweaty night and a bit achy but that's it so far.

Two days isn’t always enough for Covid to show up as positive in some people, particularly Cheetahs fans. You could still have Covid. Be careful.
