A tad high at impact is not an unfair assessment
I still think it was a legit hit.

But given the rules these days, he'd probably be given red and banned.

He was given a yellow for that.

Squidge Rugby's analysis

2 thoughts

1. He thought Willie le Roux had a great game (Elton too)
2. He is really hammering the All Blacks and their domestic violence record, I don't know enough to know if that is unfair or not.

I struggle with his kak accent. Why would this Keo type attack nr2?

I'm a big fan of his. He's been saying for years, like me, that Willie le Roux is probably the Boks' best attacking player but he is derided mostly by his own fans.

The video gives me hope that we do have the ability to develop our game. Faf's delivery at the ruck was so much quicker.

I've no problem him having a dig at the ABs for selecting wife beaters. It's a vokken embarrassment to them.

To be fair we have just as big a problem. However I do find their name suppression laws odd. Also they do tend to very quickly rehabilitate and memory hole the offences. Frizell's episode sounded psychotic. Some of the text messages that were leaked were very damning. And I don't believe he deserves the chance to represent his country. Not for a very long time at least.

Arguably our problem is much bigger. But if one of the Boks was found guilty of abusing their wife or girlfriend, I doubt they would ever play for the Boks again.

Look at what Mapimpi did in the warm up game against Japan in 2019, using his try to raise attention towards gender based violence. Kolisi has also spoken out about it recently.

Willie had a terrible game. And was rightly substituted at half time by Frans Steyn, who then had a blinder and won the game for us. Anybody who doesnt see that must be blind. Even our coaches pulled him prematurely, something they have never done before with any player. I agree though that Willie has been, in the past, consistently been the player who ran our attack. That being said, it doesnt mean that no other player can do what he does. And probably give us some xfactor, pace, agility or a better boot on top of that.

I believe that thanks to shows like Chasing the sun and guys like Squidge, teams are too exposed. They need to be constantly innovative or they'll be caught out. My feeling of the Boks recent performance is that they are still hang offer from the WC and every one (even the ref's) have caught on to their tactics. You can see teams targeting key players now. Even on defence teams are pulling key players into the ruck by playing towards them. They know how the Boks operate and they know were to shut us down. Nienaber will have to move on from what worked in the world cup to something new.

I agree with all of that. It would be nice to see someone else given the 15 jersey for the EOYT, just to build some depth.

He has been great for us over the years but he has not been close to his best over the last year or so. It just feels like he is becoming a bit of a liability in defense and under the high balls, a few of which has led to tries. To few flashes of brilliance and to many dropped catches in defense lately. Everytime the opposition kicks a ball in his direction these days I get nervous.

The Boks should not be used for him to try and get back into form, let him go play for his club and get it there while we give other candidates a chance, as you said, time to build depth and expose the younger guys to international rugby more.

Read the bolded bit. Is it fine to generalise all the All Blacks because of one doos?

Willie has lost his zip. He never had high end elite speed but had decent acceleration to get him into space. The problem is that he doesn't have a kicking game to make up for it. Percy was useful for years after he'd lost his gas because he had a top level boot on him. Frans Steyn has his bulk and his boot.

Interesting read... if true, it's a worry for the All Backs that their coaches think like that....

I didn't interpret the video as him saying Willie had a good game, but rather saying that Willie only had one unforced error; but that is quite generous.

Here is list of all Willie's contributions:
02:40 (Neutral) Runs stupid support line and kicks a ball out of a ruck. Boks had advantage, but were in an attacking opportunity
09:30 (Positive) Does well under pressure to shuffle a ball to Nkosi, but ABs defensive line is up
09:50(Positive) Carries, gets tackled and pups ball to De Allende to keep it alive

12:00 (Negative) Unforced error. Knock on from kick-off leading to Reece's try.
17:07 (Neutral) Fields a downfield kick without error and passes to Pollard who takes the ball into contact.
17:22 (Positive) Boks retain possession, Pollard still in ruck, Le Roux kicks an up-and-under, regathered by Kwagga. Boks on Attack.
17:33 (Positive) Willie at second receiver, floats ball for Etzebeth leading to midfield linebreak

17:40 (Neutral) Willie at first receiver after linebreak, passes to Pollard but no space gets man and ball.
18:03 (Negative) Attempted cross-field kick for Mapimpi in AB's 22m. Into touch with one bounce. Lost possession in red zone.
23:45 (Neutral) Another kick-off onto Willie. Strong contest by Jordie Barrett who knocks on. Pollard get messy ball that gets cleared. Advantage over according to ref.
24:12 (Negative) Quick throw in by AB's, hoist ball onto Le Roux. Fails to field it in the air, bounces off his head. All Blacks regain and on attack in Bok 22m, luckily they knock on
26:30 (Neutral) The infamous 50/22 misunderstanding. Boks regather ball of Faf box kick, Willie gets quick ball at 2nd receiver inside own half (passed back), kicks into ABs 22m and appeals for 50/22 lineout. Meanwile AB's throw in quick hoof it downfield while he is out of position.
26:57 (Negative) Poor return kick from his 22m only reaching his own 10m like. ABs on attack in Bok half. Waterboy incident with AR.
27:30 (Negative) Piss poor tackle attempt on Ioane leading to Savea try.
29:38 (Positive) Fields clearance kick and returns a bomb. Pollard competes in the air, ball loose and Etzebeth regathers.
29:53 (Neutral) Messy ball from Eben to Lood, Lood flings to Le Roux who knocks on. Advantage All Blacks, advantage leads to penalty to All Blacks. Opportunity lost. Not Willie's fault though, kak pass by De Jager.
31:30 (Positive) Great counter by Jordie after fielding a Faf box kick. Cuts through the Boks. Willie last line of defense; forces Jordie to pass, allowing for Nkosi to drift and save a try with a great touchline tackle.Lineout leads to Webber's try regardless.
36:23 (Neutral) Pollard fields a clearance kick, hoist a bomb with Willie chasing. Too deep, Jordie fields it, Willie makes a tackle, but Jordie offloads anyway.
38:39 (Positive) Boks have penalty advantage. Le Roux at first receiver after quick attacking ruck just outside ABs 22m. Quick hands gets ball to De Jager into some space, but Boks knock and no advantage was gained.

Subbed at halftime.

So yeah, not a great game but Willie, but also not as bad as I initially thought. His errors just often lead to very bad outcomes for the Boks which people tend to remember.
