Four scrumhalves is a bit much, but at least Herschel isn't there. I feel sorry for him, but he's way out of form.

Oof, I had my post ready to go for Mnr. Joe. Oh well.
I called that Dweba wouldn't go and they would take Deon Fourie as the 3rd choice hooker and backrow.

It's a fair call. We're so blessed with props. Although Trevor can probably consider himself a bit lucky.

Dweba is a fringe project player. Not ready yet, he was never going to make this WC.

Players on standby:
Am
Dweba
Lood
JLdP
du Toit
Jantjies
Pollard
Roos
Steenkamp
There's a good chance at least half of that list will end up in France.

Organised into how I think they'll be used. There must be a lot of backs they're thinking of using in new positions. Four wings and four scrumhalfs, doesn't work if they're all used in those positions only. Guessing Moodie is covering more than wing, but cannot guess on the others, Kolbe maybe because he has played 15.
Loosehead: Kitshoff, Ox Nche
Hooker: Marx, Mbonambi
Tighthead: Malherbe, Koch
Utility prop: Nyakane
4 Lock: Etzebeth, Snyman
5 Lock: Orie, Kleyn
Openside: Kolisi (captain), Van Staden
Eightman: Vermeulen, Wiese
Blindside: Pieter-Steph du Toit
Utility forward: Mostert (5 lock/blindside), Deon Fourie (hooker/backrow), Smith (backrow)
Scrumhalf: Faf, Hendrikse, Reinach, Williams
Flyhalf: Libbok
Wing: Mapimpi, Kolbe, Arendse
Inside centre: De Allende, Esterhuizen
Outside centre: Kriel
Fullback: Le Roux
Utility back: Willemse (flyhalf/fullback), Moodie (wing/13/15)

So there's players on the injury standby list that are themselves injured?
I did say Rassie always keeps a monkey up his sleeve and to trust that monkey. But this all looks a bit mad!

I think so too, but they're not using him there. Flyhalf is where he's needed now.
As soon as any player gets injured Pollard is on the plane I reckon.

I don't understand that list either. Injured players can't be on standby.
And what the hell is Steenkamp doing on that list

How does that work? A player have to be declared medically unfit to play and sent home before we can call up a player on stand by?

If Manie goes down then expect the Freestate's Ruan Pienaar to take over.

For me, drop a scrummie and take 1 of Johan Goosen or Robert du Preez. At least another option at flyhalf/fullback.

I'm guessing this is the 23 they're looking at. Went with a 5/3 bench, but the selections make 6/2 look more likely. There's only 6 backs selected not playing scrumhalf or wing (and even Kriel can play wing, so it's really 5). This makes Libbok/Le Roux/Willemse/Kriel nailed on for the 23, then they decide if they take Esterhuizen or De Allende and if the loser goes to the bench (probably not, as they're not utility players), then there's the other 8 backs covering scrumhalf and wing.
Even for opposed training 14 backs means two backlines of 7, which means the second choice backline in training will have some odd picks at 10/13/15. Can totally see news reports about Moodie playing 13 or 15.
Loosehead: Kitshoff
Hooker: Marx
Tighthead: Malherbe
4 Lock: Etzebeth
5 Lock: Mostert
Openside: Kolisi (captain)
Eightman: Vermeulen
Blindside: Pieter-Steph du Toit
Scrumhalf: Faf
Flyhalf: Libbok
Left wing: Mapimpi/Arendse
Inside centre: De Allende/Esterhuizen
Outside centre: Kriel
Right wing: Kolbe
Fullback: Le Roux
Mbonambi
Ox Nche
Koch
Snyman
Smith/Deon Fourie/Van Staden/Wiese
Hendrikse
Willemse
Moodie

That's a ludicrous selection. I don't care how similar Snyman is to Etsebeth, he should NOT be benched behind Mostert.
Rather pick a different lock on the bench (e.g. Orie if he loses 10kg) and if we
really have to have Sous somewhere, then he's a bench blindside. Maybe.
