Last I heard it was Xenforo which is more aimed at monetising traffic and content.
Ehhh that's a stretch. I'm on a couple of Xenforo forums and they're significantly better than phpBB without any monetisation features being used. Xenforo's a good bit of software and will improve the board (which isn't hard, it's a dinosaur)
Xenforo comes with a number of monetisation features available, they include:
- the ability to hide a "premium" section of the forum behind a paywall - with the paywall being configurable so your users can pay for access for a specific period of time
- pre-built plugins to various payment engines like PayPal, Apple & Google pay
- granular configuration of the paywall so that different features can be accessed by different user groups (maybe you have to pay extra to "like" posts for e.g.)
These might not be turned on for the Xenforo forums you've experience of but do you want to bet against PR introducing them?

I think I'd take that bet.
phpBB can be monetised the same way, btw - one of my favourite gaming forums was phpBB with a paywall. It's a pretty common thing for pretty much any major software to provide now.

As I said, they can co exist, one thing that won't happen here are headers and sidebars full of adverts, people can make their own choice.

Fair enough, we've heard so much bullshit from Jake over the years about what "they" want to do with PR I'm genuinely interested in seeing how it turns out.

So the forum is locked again, for 24-48 hours. It was nice to have this explained to us though by Jake.

It's going for more comebacks than Status Quo
Reports of its demise would seem to be premature.
I count 5 members on here plus 16 guests and 2 bots.
Your timing is hilarious. You wait a week and a half to come in here crowing about PR not dying and choose the day when it shuts down again. 24 hours according to Forum Fucker Jake.
I wasn't timing anything.
Have been in the Kruger Park for a week (as Saucy can probably confirm), so have been out of comms.

Xenforo is great forum software, it can be monetised if you wish but it doesn't have to be, I run 2 that aren't. It also has a feature where you can load multiple styles and users can pick which one they want.
Will be interesting to see how the PR upgrade goes, I believe they'll have to upgrade to a later version of phpBB (which they appeared to do the other week) and then convert it to Xenforo. Would also be the reason for the 24 - 48 hr timeframe given.

It doesn't look like it's going swimmingly; the timestamps on threads are updating, despite the forum being locked. Me thinks I spy a botched db migration

There is a migration mod from phpBB to Xenforo which in theory should be click and watch, but it only works on 3.2 and above i believe.

so they need to upgrade the forum first before they can migrate it?
we have been trying to get them to do that for a DECADE now...now when making "
more money" is involved, the greedy fuckers decide its time to "upgrade" ....PR is like the republican party, outdated, full of old racist white arseholes that only moves forward when money is to be made..ironically, their ben carson is kovana ..lol

Jake has been asked many times by bored members including I to upgrade the forum or to atleast add features which would make the forum useable, he always claimed he didn't have the power to do that and when he did, he made up other excuses including the last one i remember where he said that his "bosses" would rather shut down the forum than upgrade it...so why cares now? just recently they made the forum more unusable by making half the side spammy, if this is not the work of some greedy cunt then i'm not sure what is..glad i'm no longer on it honestly...i have already contributed half my life to big websites which only care about making money and not the site itself so i know what i'm talking about.

it's been over 24 hours and no change on the PR front, suggesting they've learned their lesson from the last botched attempt and are doing the work on a test server and will then rip and replace when done. Last time around you could see the changes being made on the production server and for a while it looked promising. Then it seems they screwed up the authentication and weren't able to continue...

If you look at the history of PR Comets isn't far wrong.
If you look at the heart of PR, the Home Unions are dominant in terms of posters and moderators. In Britain the game is (or was) for the elite and they are mostly white and conservative.
I've been amazed at the contrast between PR and F365. At F365 they are fully aware of the rugby demographic in Britain. A bunch of privileged Eton boys chasing eggs and playing soggy biscuit 24/7 is their view of rugby.
There are a few PR posters who have been very active at F365 and haven't done much to change this view. Toga and JPB at the front.
There has been a welcome shift at PR over the last two or three years though with decent people holding RWNJs to account and it is their behaviour which is now on the outer. This is also seen in the wider culture wars, which are slowly being won by the socially conscious left.
Long may that continue.

About the history of moderation. I have said it has improved in the last two years since Blindcider and Openside were sacked. Let's hope that trend continues.

I've found the moderating over there quite good for the past 15 years. As long as you don't mention 'Topsy Ojo' and 'poach' in the same sentence. Openside was a shocker but tbf he didn't moderate for very long.
