The strategic acquisition of a 35 year old player is hardly a poach.

At least he'll have a nice empty stadium to practice his dancing on the stairs.

relax everybody. i confused the position numbers, he played 6, which everywhere else is blindside... captain leg drive can stay!
Are you suggesting that the Sharks are going to but Etzebeth?
They should just have a competition along the lines of the CC here for the Stormers , Cheetahs , Lions etc......that way the Sharks and Bulls can cherry pick up and coming youngsters before they get snapped up abroad.Chilli wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 6:39 am https://www.news24.com/sport/rugby/curr ... h-20210126
Another one goes.........................
And just send Sharks and Bulls north....the rest if they went north would just be cannon fodder
Finishing top 4 and make semi-finals is a start...assfly wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 9:25 amWhat can the Cheetahs do to stop bleeding players?Chilli wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 6:39 am https://www.news24.com/sport/rugby/curr ... h-20210126

Grey College is nothing without it's students. No self respecting Freestater will send their kids to a pommy school in Natal, no matter what it's name is.
They need to play in decent competitions to attract and keep their players.assfly wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 9:25 amWhat can the Cheetahs do to stop bleeding players?Chilli wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 6:39 am https://www.news24.com/sport/rugby/curr ... h-20210126

At least they are playing....there really is rugby saturation with all these tournaments now that the SH has split apart. How the hell can you keep up with them all.Chilli wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 11:25 amThey need to play in decent competitions to attract and keep their players.assfly wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 9:25 amWhat can the Cheetahs do to stop bleeding players?Chilli wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 6:39 am https://www.news24.com/sport/rugby/curr ... h-20210126

I must admit, as much as I love the Cheetahs, and as much as I love rugby, I would find it very difficult to watch Krasny Yar playing the Cheetahs at the stadium Krasny Yar Stadium.
Some of my University mates went to play in Russia. Tenk Hendricks went from playing for Glen Landbou Kollege to playing for Mother russia.
Great interview with Kolbe on the Good the Bad and the Rugby podcast.
Fast forward 30 minutes if you want to skip the intro stuff.
What a lovely, humble fella. Interesting to hear about how the criticism of his size had such a huge impact on him personally.

Nog een weg.
I sort of remember him being a very good player, but not really THAT good.
Am I missing something? Or has he improved that much?

I remember him as a junior player at the Lions, but he has become a very good player for Gloucester.Chilli wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28, 2021 8:01 am https://www.news24.com/sport/rugby/ruan ... d-20210127

But I can't see him getting into the current England squad. Not with the likes of Vunipola, Underhill, the Curry brothers, and many other players on the fringes. England have got mind-boggling depth in the back row.

I really enjoy Duhan van der Merwes (Akkers klein boetie)try against England on saturday.
He played for the Kwaggas in the same age group as Warrick Gelant. They were deadly that year and the Kwaggas were tops that year.
The Skotte were terrific.

Not sure we'll ever see Wilco regularly on the bok shirt again but he's the kind of guy you'd want to rope into the world cup squad in 2023. a la Vincent Koch.

Very humble and nice guy, but I have to admit I didn’t like the interview very much. You can tell he hasn’t been asked any of those questions before (or not in English) so there was a lot of waffling filler. There are some very good, interesting and inspirational stories in there, but the interview needs an extra hour a very good editor to get it all down to 45mins or so.
I realize in the age of Covid we made due with Zoom and live interviews like this, but that’s just my opinion.
I generally find that Saffa players struggle when they're in front of a camera and have to go off-script from their media handbook. Maybe it is a language thing, but also explains why we have so few interesting pundits whose opinions are worth seeking out.Blake wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 7:58 pm Very humble and nice guy, but I have to admit I didn’t like the interview very much. That particular podcast is less about the rugby and more about the individual, and it's normally a barrel of laughs. But ja, that was quite heavy at times.
They did David Pockock a few weeks ago, that's worth a listen. A shy guy but a fascinating background.
I don't mind it being heavy, that's usually a good thing, but yes; most South African players aren't very articulate when put on the spot in front of a camera. Probably a language thing in most cases yes; but also I think many are just intensely private and just want to play. They aren't keen on the media spotlight; with the odd exception here and there...Habana being one of them.assfly wrote: ↑Tue Feb 09, 2021 5:34 am I generally find that Saffa players struggle when they're in front of a camera and have to go off-script from their media handbook. Some grow in confidence over the course of their career; but in general our players don't do great in live interviews, unless it's fluff pieces. The heavy, thoughtful interviews unfortunately need to edited...which is why Chasing the Sun was so compelling. They could get to the emotional gut-punch with a well edited buildup after removing tangents and pauses, or by asking some more guided questions and editing the questions in post.
What has come out in a lot of these recent interviews, that I've really appreciated, is how they have highlighted what Rassie has managed to find in our current crop of players...the fact that we have a bunch of scrappers. Guys who've been through the ringer and came out stronger on the other other side. Colbe, Syia, Mapimpi, Am, Nyakane, Jantjies, Nkosi...and even Marx all had tough upbringings. Vermeulen who's dad passed away when be was a kid. The fact they could all find some solidarity around that pain and harness it is a very compelling story worth telling, but I think they players are uncomfortable sharing it outside of the locker room when it is all about themselves and not about the team in general.
