Jeez, its getting bad and quickly. Up to 8,000 new cases again. Deaths will surely follow, especially from the Eastern Cape and Garden Route where it seems some hospitals are reaching capacity.
Test positivity rate at 18% yesterday with a 7-day average of 15%, so well established community transmission.

3 co-workers tested positive this week after a work trip. 1 experiencing a pretty severe case.
Gran in hospital.

Her case is particularly annoying. She was doing a decent job fighting and beating the bugger, but it made her so weak she fell when going to the bathroom.
Possibly fractured something. Combination of Covid dehydration and pain meds for the suspected fracture did a number on her kidneys and here we are.
Hope the stubborn old lady pulls through.

Fuck 2020.

It suddenly got quite close.

My gf's bestie, who lives in Kalk Bay has tested positive. Her husband who recently had half his lung removed, lymph nodes and a tumour removed from his brain has subsequently tested positive.

We have lodgers who are a young Belgium couple who were playing frisbee at Pirates last Saturday have found out that one of their team mates has tested positive. They are asymptomatic and will go for a test tomorrow as it's 7 days after contact.

Our housekeeper's young son has been sent home and his preschool closed after one of the mothers tested positive.

Our hockey has been called off because one of the players tested positive. I didn't have any contact with him as he played the game after me, but all hockey has been cancelled.

All this without any notification on the Covid App I have installed on my 'phone, which would indicate that the App is useless because hardly anyone has installed it. Presumably they think the ANC Government is using it as some kind of mind control strategy or something.

Probably the latter, which is disappointing. I also have it installed, but have (fortunately) started hunkering down at home again around 3 weeks ago when I started hearing rumblings from contacts that work at the hospitals that admissions were starting to spike again.

So while there has been an increase in cases among family, friends, coworkers and acquaintances, I haven't had physical contact with most of them.

Still surprised my app hasn't alerted me though, since I do go out for shopping and did travel along the garden route for a weekend getaway 2 weeks ago.
Would have expected at least 1 proximity alert.

I had a request from someone on PR (Nickdemos, I think) for anyone who is using the covid app to unfriend him on FB as he thinks that the app will hack into his facebook account and rat out his personal details.

I haven't done so because I can't be arsed and because it's just too silly.

Between people like that and the 5G, Bill Gates tracking, 666 mark of the beast anti-vaxx crowd I can't say I'm really surprised we are losing this fight against Covid and will probably still be in a similar position next year this time.

Hopefully there will be enough sane people to pull all this dead weight out of the doldrums with us so we can get back to some sense of normality.

Thanks Oom.

It's worst part yes. Lost my other gran in June...not Covid related, but because of lockdown at the time traveling was quite tricky so attended the funeral virtually.
Also tough on my sister in Texas who is feeling very alone through all this.

Thank goodness for modern technology and frequent video calls.

Thanks Fangle. She was a remarkable woman...born 60 years too early. My sister and I often wonder what she would have been like if she had been in her 30s today.

Always amazed me what a knack she had for technology, whatever her age. She actually did a computer course in Oudshoorn in the early 90’s, even though they never had a computer on the farm. Think they got a laptop in the mid-2000. She was intimidated by it, but after just one explanation she “got” it and took to a laptop, smartphone and tablet easier than my mom ever did.

@Rinkals,
For what it’s worth I got a possible Covid exposure on my App this morning...but on 12 December from proximity to person that tested positive on 2 December...so yeah, not sure to do with information like that.

Not worried though. Spent that day at home all day and just did a quick run to Makro to buy some booze to stock up since I though CT was also getting locked down like PE. Has to be where the “possible exposure” happened.

Pretty cool tech.

I suppose it's similar to vaccinations.

The App is useless if only a small minority buy into the process and download it.

Similarly, vaccination is far more effective if widely adopted.

But it's precisely the people who rail against government interference, who insist that covid is harmless to healthy people and the death statistics are overstated by doctors driven to include it on a death certificate at all costs in order to keep us all at home and in lockdown who are a barrier against any return to normalcy by resisting their adoption.

I'm back in Jo'burg for a couple of weeks before returning to Nottingham Road (covid and possible adoption of level 5 notwithstanding) and there has been a sharp spike in infections after the Ballito Rage.

Listening to these kids expressing no remorse and claiming that, as healthy young adults, they are unlikely to be threatened by it and it's their life, anyway, one can feel the irritation at their poor grasp of logic.

Going to have to Oom. Those busses of beachgoers that swarm to the beaches on 16, 26 Dec and 1 Jan are a Covid Timebomb.

It’s a sacrifice we are all going to have to make to defuse it.

Is it the oldies who are dying in SA as well? I agree that indoor dining should be very limited, but not outdoor. Allow beer gardens with limited capacity. But I understand the closing of the beaches on New Years Day etc, but not for normal days.

I think they have stopped publishing the ages of C19 victims in SA as I haven’t seen the statistics on that in a while. But the dashbord I used to use for SA C19 tracking definitely showed a trend. More then 60% of the deaths were in the 60+ age range bracket and a large chunk of that in the 80+ bracket.

Anecdotally it’s also been my experience with my own gram and friends who have lost grandparents and elderly parents.

The problem with the younger people is that they are the vectors; taking the virus home to their parents to grandparents that they still live with.

And also, while fatalities for those under 40 are rarer, they obviously still happen.

I presume that South Africa will be getting largely the Oxford vaccine mainly because it can be stored at room temperature, compared to the American ones which have to be at -20 for one and -70 for the other. In my age bracket I hope to be vaccinated by the end of January.

Damn damn damn....beaches closing down. The whole winter my boys and I have been looking forward to Boogie boarding. It's going to be heart breaking if Western cape beaches close. At least we have been going every weekend . And had an awesome day today ( body is aching in places I have never ached before)..

We are also planning new year on the Orange River doing canoing and camping under the stars..thats probably out the window too.

I can see the thinking behind closing the beaches, but all those people are going to congregate anyway as it's Christmas. Surely it's better if they're outside?

Best of luck with your grandmother Blake. It's a shitty disease and no mistake.

Every day I count my blessings over here. I deliver hot meals to elderly residents most days and they still don't want to go out much even though the risk is close to zero - poor buggers.

Covid gives you less oxygen which affects your brain. I think PE has has less oxygen for decades.
