Don’t worry they were a right wing party at the time.

But Nick found a legal way around the reforms so that all of the employees of Coats-Paton would be exempt from the benefits of the legislation.

This was a time of sweatshops in the textile industries and Nick helped deny rights to his employees.

A study of the timeline of Coats-Patons factories opening globally reveals a hard-line capitalist approach.

When, in developing countries, they were faced with challenges to their mode of operation the company simply “upped sticks” and transferred their power looms to more receptive countries taking full advantage of weaker legal systems and lower wages.

Following a number of mergers, the company is now known as Coats PLC.

It operates sites (together with other multinationals) in many countries worldwide, including India, Peru, Columbia, Ecuador, Brazil, the Philippines, Venezuela, Pakistan, and Turkey.

In the 1970’s World Trading Authorities applied pressure intent on bringing to an end the shoddy business practices of Coats-Paton and other multinationals which were revealed to be tantamount to slavery.

Ah come on, Laura was Cummings' mouthpiece for months on end and frequently sacrificed her own credibility in her rush to get the govt's viewpoint out there (and defend it at the same time).

However what her dad did is completely immaterial. Criticism of Tory Laura should be about her own actions - christ knows she's done enough.

A reporter who consistently parrots unnamed "downing street sources" in order to get the Tory line out there without it having to be justified or defended by anyone in particular is essentially a propaganda mouthpiece.

Telling people during the voting process that early reports looked bad for Labour was a massive fuckup, too.

It's utterly inane to pretend that British media isn't dominated by the right wing. Fuck me - we have the Telegraph, the Times, the Mail, the Sun, the Express, the Spectator, plus places like Spiked. Our news media is dominated by the right wing.

It’s utterly dishonest to argue that most Broadcast news presents a left , centre/left editorial position. The broadcast news media is dominated by the left.

I also laugh at the Labour supporting journalists aren’t actually left wing.

Newspapers are a diminishing force.

For every “spiked” (actually contains some very left wing writers) there’s a Canary , Novo media ....

For every Spectator there’s the New statesman.....

The idea of this dominance of right is for the birds.

But that’s her job, to get the info out. She is a reporter rather than a classic Fox News talking head.

The decisions on running the country are made by government, and so it’s hardly surprising she’ll be spending her time hunting info and reporting what government sources have told her.

On your second point about the early view on mail votes - absolutely agree. Stupid gossipy thing to say and the bbc should have thrown the book. Plus the government should have said something.

Slippery slope shit like that can set precedent and then we end up with trump.

Laura K was also all over the election story where a labour activist punched was it Matt Hancock's aid? Well didn't punch him.

She's doing her job but the conservative press team worked out how to play her like a fiddle. As you say she's reporting on "news" because the government say it but they've been using her credibility to post all sorts. Like when the Barnard castle story came out her first post on the matter was number 10s rebuttal from an off the record source.

All power to them for working her out.

Okay can go through bimbos points which were rancidly unserious anyway. Paper circulation is falling - but the most red papers Sun, Mail are both radibly right wing. The mail's website is one of the most read in the country and the most of any newspaper. Newspapers still set the agendas. So there is that.

Oh the sun owned by Murdoch who also owns the times, the mail and telegraph owned by non Dom right wing billionaires too.

The Spectator has the new statesmen as a rival. Okay, fair point. What he omits is the spectator has double the circulation. The current Chancellor was best man at Number 10s press secretary and the speccy's PolEds wedding. Andrew Neil their chairman was the BBC's flagship political heavyweight now setting up Fox News. Oh, and their former editor is in number 10.

Spiked is evened out by Novara as contraversial talkshow guests. The Canary is a sewer.

Channel 4 news perhaps is left wing. But to say the broadcast media as a whole is left wing is just nonsense too. The BBC's agenda is set by the papers which are leaning right. Their PolEds are usually Tories - Mr Neil's background discussed. Nick Robinson was president of his universities Tory society. ITV I don't know and Sky is against owned by Mr Murdoch so let's get real there.

I get all of your points, and I don’t particularly disagree with the thrust of what you’re saying, but I’d make two points of my own;

1- Perspective on what’s left and right is subjective. I consider myself to be a centrist but I dare say you may think I’m on the right. Bimbo may think I’m a lefty.

The bbc to me is left of centre.

C4 is proper left.

I don’t think this set of conservatives are particularly right wing. But again, that may mean I’m actually on the right rather than centre 😂

2- the definitions of right and left feel really misunderstood. Especially now the have the culture war stuff in the mix too.

All that, leads to a lot of people trying to compartmentalise others - I think it’s clear we’re in the age of ad hominem debate. It’s no longer about the policy or the action. It’s about the individuals doing it; Kuinsberg is a classic example. Stop analysing her. Analyse what she’s saying about the policy she’s talking about. One at a time.

Social media is undermining debate itself, as it makes playing the man, not the ball, easy.

Too easy.

Not even true, as Britain is a right wing country is stands to reason the press is mostly right wing too. Very chicken and egg on who sets who's opinion but they go together.

My point is to suggest the press in the UK is majorly left wing is just an insane opinion to have. It - like the UK electorate - is mostly right wing.

Their PolEds are usually Tories - Mr Neil's background discussed. Nick Robinson was president of his universities Tory society. ITV I don't know and Sky is against owned by Mr Murdoch so let's get real there.

Publications reflect there readers and viva versa, you’re just confused that there actually conservatives out there.

Erm Sky is owned by Comcast not Murdoch.
Besides, I can’t be bimbo, as I know the difference between their, there and they’re!

Sorry bimbo - low blow 😂

For the birds indeed.
Hmmmmm - not sure that’s a particularly meaningful bit of work.

It’s a survey of public perception on stories. The public are asked if they think stories are too right or too left wing.

Hardly scientific.

Then we get Breitbart UK, UnHerd, Guido fucking Fawkes, Quilliam etc - all stuffed with people who have an oversized influence on uk politics and plenty of screen time on our news and current affairs programmes

The BBC's board is Tory central these days, sadly.

Forgot about Guido and his cesspit.

UnHerd was founded by someone who until cosying up too much to Victor Orban was Johnson's social justice adviser!

She’s a reporter reporting things.

I’ve always found her reasonably neutral.
A reporter who consistently parrots unnamed "downing street sources" in order to get the Tory line out there without it having to be justified or defended by anyone in particular is essentially a propaganda mouthpiece.

Telling people during the voting process that early reports looked bad for Labour was a massive fuckup, too.

A reporter needs to know when they are being played. She repeatedly trotted out the government's own defences, unattributed and unverified, basically acting as their spin doctor time and time again. Whatever bile Cummings wanted to spray in response to events, Laura was happy to be the mouthpiece for it.

Had she put a name to the words and applied even the slightest bit of critical thinking and objectivity, I would happily defend her. As it is, well...

LBC is as left wing as you can get. On Saturday they were out and out pro SNP/Welsh Labour. They spent hours slating BoJo.

Random1 wrote: Mon Dec 21, 2020 12:44 am I get all of your points, and I don’t particularly disagree with the thrust of what you’re saying, but I’d make two points of my own;

Too easy.
I was under the impression that you and Bimbo were one and the same.

Your posts are too closely aligned to his for any other conclusion.
Ha! I’m not a multi.

I don’t think I’m as righty as bimbo!

I’m not right wing. It’s a constant misrepresentation that some here cling on to so they don’t have to address any points made.

My point is to suggest the press in the UK is majorly left wing is just an insane opinion to have. It - like the UK electorate - is mostly right wing.

No one has claimed the “press” in the UK is left wing.

Haha that's a total nonsense as well. JHB, Iain Dale, Nick Ferrari all rampant right wingers. JoB probably the only left winger on LBC.

There is no section of the British press/broadcast/media which isn't largely right wing. Except the BBC as a "neutral" institution. To deny it is to be incredibly unserious.

I don't think anywhere "as left wing as you can get" would have Nick Ferrari, Nigel Farage, the Quilliam guy, plus regular appearances by people like Douglas Murray. LBC is an odd duck for sure.

But even the right wing (and people who claim not to be right wing but are in lockstep with them) have reasons to slate Johnson these days.

I forgot about Hately-Brewer. Genuinely vile.

Surely all you right wingers must be happy with so many prominent people repeating your views on tv, radio, and in the papers? Why be so unhappy about the much smaller proportion of left wingers?

That’s a good example of my point made further up; it’s all relative.

I reckon you’re right of me.

I reckon I’m centre.

So to me, you’re a righty.

Which brings me to my other point above; if people dismiss your points due to your position on the political spectrum, then that undermines whatever argument they’re making against you (in my opinion).

You’ll never get an ad hominem argument from me mate. Make your points and I’ll argue the substance.

I’ll only call you a cunt if you win.

Apart from The Spectator and The Times (less so these days) you get very few actually quality pieces of right wing opinion and writing. It's all shrill whaling about how life is so unfair for them.
