I sympathise with the argument that he went low and what else was he meant to do but that logic suggests the only outcome is that he flips. In which case you just cant do it. Sorry. He was lucky the player didn't land more awkwardly.

That said, I thought they might have argued it to yellow because he didn't land on his head or even upper back/neck.

Then what's the coaching point then. He goes upright and risks head contact, or steps out of the way of the tackle?

And I hadn't even noticed that he lands on his arse. I just don't see how that's serious foul play. I know I'm in a minority, but he just seemed to get a red because it looked spectacular.

Don't think it would have made a difference in the end though. It's another good Ireland team who deserved the GS.

That's what I thought the video dude was working him towards
Missed that. The rest of the officials seemed to agree with the ref.

I think a senior ref would have given yellow.

Coaching point? I mean it rarely happens so I guess he shouldn't have tried to tackle head on, planting his feet, and executed a tackle which allowed some defensive movement to absorb the momentum.

I just don't see how it's a red in the law book. Or even an offence.

It's not even one of those, 'it's unfortunate, but by the letter of the law...' jobs

The coaching points are obvious.

1) if you’re tackling someone going really fast head on, you can either aim a dominant tackle at or above their centre of balance (so roughly at their chest) or you can go lower and do a soak tackle, falling back with them. If you go hard at them below their centre of balance they’re going to flip.

2) if you fuck up and go in hard below their centre of balance, don’t stand up when they’re horizontal on your back! That’s what really sends the guy cartwheeling.

By which law is it a red though? Genuine question, as I'm struggling with this.

And I'm someone not crying about the Steward one yesterday.

It’s definitely at least a yellow, he land with his shoulders below his hips. It’s pure luck that the flip is so severe it takes him past being upside down, it could really easily have been a head plant; I suspect that’s what makes the ref go red. Same landing but 100 degrees instead of 260 and perhaps he gets a yellow.

I’ve lost track of how they call these things now; in a sane world it would be how dangerous / reckless the player’s actions are (very, in this case), but the regs seem to be all about outcome, which I think is stupid but might mean it should have been a yellow.

This is one area that annoys me. Where the act itself was reckless/dangerous, it should not matter one iota whether the victim lands on his head or, fortuitously, on shoulders or whatever.

I just can't see a law in the law book showing what happened an offence though. It would have already been an unfortunate red, but he absolutely doesn't land on his head or upper body. It just didn't happen.

Not unique to Ireland in any way, my club Sarries are appalling for it. These lads though are probably the first generation of rugby players who have come through a system where they’ve never been punched in the face, and it shows

I thought he landed on his upper body. And there are generic laws about dangerous play, which that 100% was - if you flip someone through 260 degrees you’re not in any kind of control over whether he breaks his neck or not.

The resource gap is of galactic proportions.

Some multinational facts
- Gailleton is only 19 and was born in England. He was the leading try scorer in T14 for a while.
- Gazzoti (the no8) is only 18 and is from an Italian family.
