More like asking for safety measures to be put in place like pedestrian crossings or reduced speed limits / traffic lights etc in problem areas.

There was a guy on the radio a wee while back from the transplant services, he said that improvements in car safety, better breaking systems, better suspension/steering, but most of all, people being made to wear seatbelts has led to a shortage of organs being available for transplants.

I volunteer Sir as a donor.

In the US there are a few States with; "No Helmet Laws", for motorcycles. ER doctors with their usual macabre sense of humor refer to those who decide to not wear helmets as, "Donorcycles", or just "Donors".

Government traffic safety mandates are typically designed to reduce the harmful externalities of risky behaviors. We consider whether motorcycle helmet laws also reduce a beneficial externality by decreasing the pool of viable organ donors. Our central estimates show that organ donations resulting from fatal motor vehicle accidents increase by 10 percent when states repeal helmet laws. Two characteristics of this association suggest that it is causal: first, nearly all of it is concentrated among men, who account for over 90 percent of all motorcyclist deaths, and second, helmet mandates are unrelated to organ donations due to circumstances other than motor vehicle accidents. Our estimates imply that every death of a helmetless motorcyclist prevents or delays as many as 0.33 deaths among individuals on organ transplant waiting lists.

If only Covid didn't fuck up organs before dispatching the donor; countries could significantly reduce their organ waiting lists; & increase the national IQ; because the same fuckwit mentality that decides wearing a helmet, as wearing a mask; will provide a ready supply of organ donors.

Plus the the effect on the tourism industry is somewhat mitigated by all that lovely, lovely cash staying onshore instead of heading off. Several billion dollars didn't get spent overseas this year.

Long term, the pandemic will subside, one way or another. That’s what happens with pandemics. Look up pictures of cities in the 1920s. You see crowded streets, people going about their lives. 1918 pandemic was 2 or 3 years, 1890 pandemic 4 or 5. A vaccine or other treatments will shorten it and get rid of the long tail (also it will provide a baseline for future Coronaviruses jumping species). This is a year or two of restrictions on our lives, that’s all.

My Grannie, well into her 90s, finally had the fall we've been anticipating for years over the weekend.
Wakes up in hospital, everyone in masks, unable to understand why none of us have visited her (she isn't processing the restrictions). Bloody grim stuff - you would like to think six months into a crisis we'd have worked out a way people could get one visitor in these sorts of circumstances.

Hardly, but we are going to have to learn to live with this virus there is no point in wringing our hands. Neither is there any point in trashing the economy to delay the deaths of a few octogenarians (ask them all the ones I know agree). Lockdowns seemingly are not the answer so where do we go from here? The whole lockdown thing is to prevent the over running of the NHS which didn't happen the first time I don't think its going to happen this time.

Imagine how much worse it would have been without measures? The point of restrictions isn't that everything ends up perfect, but to minimise damage.

And for what must be the millionth time, it's not just octogenarians dying and survival can be accompanied by any combination of permanent lung scarring, breathing difficulties and general weakness/low energy. There are perfectly ordinary people who were discharged from hospital months ago still really struggling with things like walking around for a prolonged period of time because of the toll this thing takes on those unfortunate enough to get it bad. While there are factors more likely to suffer a severe case, there are enough people apparently absent those factors to make anyone concerned
