400 comes up.
In fact Maharaj drills 2 more fours to go to his highest test score of 75.
Needs to get his ton.

I'm in Nottingham Road and the drizzle is perpetual.
I might wander down to the Notties Pub.
Bangladesh use up their last review in vain.

Harmer goes for 29, stumped.

Olivier to the crease. This should be fun.
No addition to the score, Williams falls lbw to Mehidi.

Mehidy struck in the abdomen in the gully off Erwee's edge
He didn't pick it up and made no move to catch it and is stretchered off.

From the world of associate cricket - arse nipper of a finish today between Scotland and Oman. Under par total from Scotland of 215 all out. Oman 209/7 after 48, Scotland bowled them out for 210.
Scotland also beat PNG by a distance yesterday, so have strengthened their position in WCL div2. Top 3 into the CWC qualifying competition.

First Bangladesh wicket down in the second over. I am really enjoying this Harmer/Maharaj combination. Would be interesting to see them bowl together on the sub-continent.

I see the next test side to play against us at home will be the West Indies, who only want to play 2 tests in February next year.
Obviously, playing us at home risks losing test championship points.
We have 3 tests against England in England and 3 against Australia.

Joe Root gone as England captain
Joe Root has resigned as the England men’s Test captain after a five-year tenure in the role. Pressure had built on the 31-year-old after a dire run of Test results, culminating in a 4-0 Ashes thrashing and subsequent 1-0 series defeat in West Indies.

Not really a surprise, they'll probably bring back Jimmy now and make his captain.

I reckon they are going to squeeze Stokes in to the role - which has real Flintoff/Pietersen vibes.
Plus Stokes has been a bit of a walking injury recently.
I don't think Root is a good captain - tactically he gets it wrong on the side of caution too often - but then is that more to do with the tools at his disposal isn't it? Losing Archer has been a MASSIVE issue to this side - in tests and white ball arenas - as well as Stokes' long absences.
There is a good test side in there somewhere - maybe a different voice is what is needed?

I dunno, a good captain gets the most out of the resources at his disposal and Root has never done that, particularly when it comes to the spinners. There's been plenty of average-to-poor Test sides over the years with captains who were good thinkers and able to manage things really well on the field and with selection.

It's been an unenviable task but Root has been a very poor captain. He's tactically woeful, not got the best out of the group, clearly hasn't pressured them enough to rethink their approach to the game and has run his best player into the ground.
Christ knows who replaces him. I fear for Stokes in the role but would bet that's the way they go. No natural leaders at all, which isn't a shock to anyone paying attention to player development in this country over the last decade...

Select David Bedingham now. He could be captaincy material in a couple of years.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Broad as a stop gap for a couple of years. Otherwise it might be Bairstow.

I’d lay money on it being Stokes. He’s clearly a natural leader; issue is whether he’s a natural NCO or can make the change to officer, so to speak. And whether he can manage himself. Not sure how it will work with his drama llama tendencies; phlegmatic he is not, but I don’t know how far that’s just how he presents, or whether he will struggle to make dispassionate captaincy calls under pressure.
But really he’s the only person other than Root whose place is guaranteed. Bairstow perhaps but a) he has had some shocking periods with the bat, only just reclaimed his place, b) judging by his decision making he’s not very bright and c) I am told he’s not terribly popular in the game.
I wouldn’t let Broad anywhere near it… not quite sure why but it just feels all sorts of wrong.
Other option is to go the full Carling and parachute some FEC in to be a clean broom. No idea who.

Also - I don’t think Stokes would take someone else being offered it terribly well, I think he’d view it as a snub. It almost has to be him just so that if it doesn’t work he knows it shouldn’t be him.

When I saw you'd responded to my post, I didn't open the thread for a couple of days because I was sure I was going to get a shoeing.
How pathetic is that?
