Gordon Bennett wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 5:51 amGreat tune, though Bressa Creeting Cake were my favourite 90s Flying Nun band.
Love that band. Still listen to their album quite a bit.
Palm Singing should have been a massive hit. Such a great funky baseline, xylophone use, feel good summer vibes.
Saw them on a brief reunion tour probably about 10 years ago now. Great band live.
Particularly like A Chip That Sells Millions, as I recall.
Edmund Cake's solo album was interesting too. Not as good as prime Bressa Creeting Cake, but I do recall a particular song about the Silverdale shopping complex that was catchy and bizarre in equal measure.
In a very different vibe, I also loved HDU and The Subliminals from the 90s.
Then I guess from the 80s, bands like the Verlaines, Chills and of course, The Bats.

Very early 90s Invercargill. Lyrically brilliant from Sean Kirkpatrick and catchy as fuck to boot. Criminally unknown outside of Southland and a better NZ sporting anthem than fucking Loyal. Not the greatest compression on the YouTube links.

Alternative is a pretty broad brief, basically consider it a place for anything kind of rock-y, but not metal as there's a thread for that.
My own musical preferences skew towards hardcore and its derivatives, but feel free to bring anything you like that isn't. Indie or Britpop are just as welcome as emo or deathcore.
Hey sock
I know you love He Is Legend, so I thought I would give you some fine emo punk from a band called Dogleg
Kawasaki Backflip
Fox
My favourite band of 2020 - must be great live

Cheers, hadn't heard that Idles track yet. Don't listen to enough new music these days, but they are one of the current bands I do find pretty interesting. A few favourite tracks

Mother was the first track I heard from them. It's been so long since hearing a song for the first time that blew me away. Been a fan ever since. Their anger seems very apt right now, their new album should be a thumper.

Cheers, Nipper. Right up my alley. There's not an awful lot of bands doing the emo punk thing right now, but lots of pop punk that leans heavily into the pop. The only one of which I particularly like is Stand Atlantic because their vocalist still retains a bit of an edge. They seem to be toying with a more alt-rock sound rather than pure pop-punk on a couple of the tracks previewed for a new album due out this year
Knuckle Puck are an actual emo punk band and they've got an album due this year too, but the two preview tracks I've heard have been disappointingly meh.

A few for tonight
First one is at the poppy end of the alternative spectrum. On the last, I had no idea until the other week that Mark Kozelek played the Stillwater bassist in Almost Famous.

that Idles one sounds like it'd be my thing, quick squizz on discogs not much in the way of cheapies though. Protomartyr/Spray Paint split 7" is on my wantlist... if I can get past the vaguely annoying seppo accent

I've just rewatched this entire concert. An absolute classic by one of my top 3 bands.
I only found out tonight that Jonathan Demme died in April, for some reason it passed me by at the time.

It's alltime alright but not sure its "alternative"
But then again you could argue that anyone with these slick major label vids isnt "alternative" either...

Yeah, Benji's a definite favourite Big Nipper. Very consistent album. Both in theme (death) and quality. Speaking of death, here's some more
And another lo fi favourite.

Decided I'm going to work my way through the whole thread at work today.
Like The Kills. Say them in Welly a few years back on the Ash and Ice tour. Only a couple of hundred there so got right up close without having to jostle at all. Alison was looking fiiiine

I try. To be honest I lost touch with them a bit after that. Only ever had It Still moves and At Dawn and have never really come back to check out anything more recent. Which I'll now do at some point

Very exciting times for me, there are some bands crawling out of the woodwork with a mid-2000's style post-hardcore revival
