Was pleasantly surprised with England yesterday - looked in control throughout and really should have scored at least one more.
Stupid tournament format means that gives us one foot in the next round already.

Not sure why people were booing the keeper, he got bbq’d by his teammates giving the ball away in midfield. Nothing he could have done

am stealing that, very good :-)
He was miles out of his area thoughPaddington Bear wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 4:04 pm Not sure why people were booing the keeper, he got bbq’d by his teammates giving the ball away in midfield. Nothing he could have done

I never understand why keepers come out so far though, a bit of showboating?

They're constantly giving orders to the defence and are an additional passing target these days.Slick wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 5:23 pmWere they? He was wandering about in the centre circle FFS. Entirely his fault.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 4:04 pm Not sure why people were booing the keeper, he got bbq’d by his teammates giving the ball away in midfield. Nothing he could have done

But David Marshall isn't a passing target. Also why is a CB shooting from 40 yards.JM2K6 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 5:36 pmThey're constantly giving orders to the defence and are an additional passing target these days.Slick wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 5:23 pmWere they? It's classic Scotland to concede a wondergoal that ends our first tournament in 20+ years because our keeper decided he was Manuel Neuer and centre back decided he was prime Roberto Carlos.

Yeah, 100% the keepers fault. Not only was he out of position he made a non existent effort at a save and just ran into the net.
Should have at least jumped and tried to get his fingertips on the ball.

Yeah have since seen the other angle - not one he’ll want to look at. Nah, that’s bollocks. Marshall was miles off his line. Was a lovely finish from the Czech, but he had an empty net to aim at. 100% on him.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 6:19 pmYeah have since seen the other angle - not one he’ll want to look at. Should have been Gordon in goal. Marshall hasn’t been on form at all. But Clarke was always starting him as the hero of the playoff.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Nah, Scotland had been far too passive. I was delighted to see the lad have a dig. On another day it could have been a completely different outcome, but regardless, that goal wouldn't have been scored if Marshall wasn't being so daft. To be fair to him he was the only Scot, bar Robertson who stepped up.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 6:19 pmYeah have since seen the other angle - not one he’ll want to look at. I think the bigger question is why were Christie and O'donnell on the pitch and why a primary school team would quickly learn how to defend Dykes's "aerial threat".Yr Alban wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 6:25 pmNah, that’s bollocks. He is the poorest keeper in the squad but as you say penalty saves have lifted him way above his station despite being part of the reason that game went to penalties IIRC.Yr Alban wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 6:25 pm

I agree, I can't see the problem with him having a shot. I didn't think Scotland played that badly really. Robertson was great. We lost to a decent goal and a fantastic freak goal, but made a few chances ourselves - trust us to let in a goal that could be made into a meme.... In saying that, I can't see us winning a game now, so that's us for a while, nice while it lasted.

Christ knows why the organisers stuck England Scotland on at 8 on a Friday - promises to be carnage.
Spain Sweden last night was a strange game - Spain made all the running without really looking like putting one in, and Sweden with one real chance really should have snuck it. A format where finishing third probably sends you through encourages negative football.

Haven't Spain always been a bit like that; so enamoured with keeping the ball and executing lovely passing moves that they forgot to score any goals.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 9:01 am Christ knows why the organisers stuck England Scotland on at 8 on a Friday - promises to be carnage.

I actually thought we did OK too. The game was 40th place v 44th place in the FIFA rankings and it was actually fairly even. Scotland had most of the possession and almost twice the shots on goal.Slick wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 8:37 amBlackmac wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 6:53 amNah, Scotland had been far too passive. The psychological effect of the Marshall fuckup can’t be underestimated. Scotland were 1-0 down, possibly slightly against the overall run of play, they had had a solid penalty claim denied and were pressing hard for an equaliser. Then the Czechs were gifted an unearned second goal out of absolutely nowhere, and it absolutely knocked the stuffing out of Scotland. You could actually see their heads go down.

Think there will be a reasonable amount of carnage in London on Friday.
Predicted 20,000 Scots travelling down - all trains out of Glasgow and Edinburgh full - plus you'd expect a few thousand more to be travelling from various parts of England and London itself.
I know we are pretty proud of our reputation as great fans, but come 7.30 pm after a day drinking in the sun and suddenly realising they have nowhere to watch the game there is a fair bit of potential for uglyness.

No one ever covers themselves in glory at England Scotland football matches. Mentioned this earlier in the thread I think but you'd have thought they'd make it the earlier kick off.Slick wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:07 am Think there will be a reasonable amount of carnage in London on Friday.

Crazy that it's not. Also, given everything else that is going on I don't really see why they couldn't have stuck up a big screen somewhere.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:32 amNo one ever covers themselves in glory at England Scotland football matches. Because other than those with tickets there is no reason for people to travel given the current circumstances. There is a fan zone in Glasgow they could have tried to get tickets for.Slick wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:33 amCrazy that it's not.
