No idea why. I was always a Machenaud fan: including before he got selected. Now, if you were with Parra's cousin.....

This U20 side look just like old school France: can't catch a high ball and hopeless discipline.

And the cheating Scottish ref finally gets what she's being trying to do for 79:30 of this game.

Ireland did look the more fluent side through out; but didn't turn it into points.

Ireland played like their seniors: which is testimony to the cohesion in their structure. Whole game based upon retention and power. But like every Irish side I can recall for a decade, they are so illegal at the breakdown. The amount of clearouts from the side, over the top etc whilst the ref allowed them to keep possession that way. Last straw was when she called use it at the last maul and 6 seconds later she awards a pen to them for a French collapse. Just when is "use it"?
Ireland really created nothing in open play whilst France blew (or were called back by the ref) several clear cut chances.

The Irish u20s look a lot beefier, than they have in previous years.
There was one phase of plays early in the 1st half, & it was noticeable, they way they were busting thru the defensive tackles; but the forwards still have the skills to take & pass.

The Irish maul won the game. That and the intensity at which Ireland played.
French discipline at the maul was appalling though, as if the guys didn't know the rules.

Didn't France have an easy try chalked off for picking the ball up in a ruck against Italy?
The breakdown does seem to be an area of weakness for French teams.

3 tries chalked off in total. Agree though partly. France are really trying to play away from the breakdown whereas Ireland's game is all about going from ruck to ruck whilst keeping possession and so there is no real France fetcher in the backrow (despite Jelonch being there exactly for that: he's just not doing it). However, they rely on guys like Marchand, Dupont and Villiere to provide some unexpected support there.

Yeah yeah, it's not actually possible for Ireland to just beat France.

The ref was fine, an other would have given a yellow to the French for repeated penalties.
I didn’t like the one pass rugby the Irish played, the Bleuets couldn’t catch a ball in the air, they give to many penalties.
I didn’t get why they weren’t jumping on the Irish’s line outs as they were losing systematically the duals in the mauls.
Also 6 main players were missing due to injuries or covid.
