It was a concept Team NZ brought in last rotation. I think it was 2 fold: it gave them a chance to evaluate the physics (modeling vs real world), and also saved money for teams to get up to speed with this new concept. This is now a progression primarily as a cost saving measure I reckon. Less crew and build cost, so encouraging more entrants. It's in NZ's advantage to keep this as cheap as possible, coz if it's unlimited budget, we lose. Remember Freemantle? There were about 4 Aussie teams going at it, and something like 7 challengers. Racing all over the place. But sadly, economics and greed have killed that off.
Don't necessarily disagree with you, but this is meant to be the F1 of the sailing world, so they need to be in the bigger faster machines. November in Jeddah in the smaller boats, then the last regatta in March?? is in the bigger 75 footers.
