10 years ago I probably would have fired a broadside back at your personal insult. Now-a-days, I'll just wait for you to produce a logical, scientifically argued response before engaging.
So you concede that neither I, or anyone else, suggested that our total deaths figure had changed? So what was the point of your comment?

Anyone can find a dissenting specialist to support their minority view... we need only look at the climate change ‘argument’ to see the same flying in the face of logic and reason tactic.
There’s a growing denialist trend forming over COVID19 and the need to continue controls. The trend is rooted in commercial interests.. the need for business to ‘return to normal’. The bad news is, there is no normal to return to. We are facing a serious transition that requires moral fibre and strength of conviction to negotiate. Alarmist tendencies fanned by self interested media doesn’t cut it.

Ellafan! Thank god you're OK! I was afraid you'd fallen off the edge of the world.
We made a bet on whether or not Covid-19 would claim more deaths than an average flu month (32.4k I believe we agreed upon, in the month of April). This was based on your readings of experts (such as the Imperial paper etc), now you're quoting more experts, clearly you know what you're talking about.
Only, your estimate was a bit off? You see, it turns out, that in April, almost 200k died... Still, it was still only totalling 235k total at that point, so still no worse than a years worth of flu eh...
Right, now that's said. Where's the ignore button on this new forum?
EDIT - Think I've found it :).

Well seeing as you are ignoring anything I say, I will merely say that you need to form a wider appreciation of death rates from all causes across the planet to find real calamities, including... here is a good one.
"A child dies every three seconds globally due to food deprivation – 10,000 children every day"
https://www.theguardian.com/global-deve ... tudy-shows
Perhaps you could direct some of your vituperative emotional response to that issue.

It's only a statistical irrelevance because we took the major steps that we did. Looks what's happening in Victoria when people let their guard down by just a fraction. 70+ new cases a day and presumably our death toll will rise from 104 total deaths.
Moreover our economy would have been trashed anyway due to the closing of international borders and the impact this would have had on tourism, trade, higher education etc. Or are you suggesting that our borders should have been kept open?
That's the bit that surprises me too - when people say that closing the borders wrecked the economy. It was going to be wrecked anyway.
Even with closed borders, the internal lockdown was over-applied. I tend to prefer the views of Stanford University professor of structural biology Michael Levitt, a Nobel prize winner, to opinions on a rugby forum.
About 1 million Australians were unemployed within weeks of lockdown. Countless small businesses gone. This will take a generation to recover, but yeh, we did good. Even though it still isn't over.

Yes this global pandemic has not been ideal from an economic point of view. Presumably if you'd been Premier of Victoria you would have kept everything open? Business as usual? I see Florida has recorded 10,000 new cases over the past 24 hours, but you'll be pleased to note that their businesses are all open. You presumably think Florida is therefore an example that Australia should be following?

Typical. Everything in absolutes. Not capable of nuance. Not even capable of witholding insults.
There are nations that did not go into full lockdown and haven't had hundreds of or even tens of thousands dead. And they achieved this without a million people losing their jobs or almost wiping out whole industries.

This pandemic is not ideal from any point of view. It is not one or the other, it is and the other. You guys seem incapable of acknowledging this. It has to be one or the other with you guys. And then take the worst case scenario to try and make your point. This is the disease that you have decided matters most when it comes to lives matter. Anything else you couldn't really be fvcked about.
The following works effectively in limiting the spread. Social Distancing. Cleanliness. Masks. Work from home if you can. Test. Test. Test. Isolate. Trace. Test. Test. Test. Rinse repeat.
Through history we have always quarrantined the sick. This is the first time that many nations have decided to quarantine the sick and the healthy together. It has failed spectacularly in some countries and worked brilliantly in others. It is not a perfect solution. Nor a long term one.

As for Jobs, yes it's terrible that this has happened but if an arch-IPA driven PM locks down the country, you can bet your last farthing that they took it seriously enough to do it.

Anyone else starting to notice an interesting trend? Infections are increasing yet death rates are decreasing. I have several theories bubbling around my pretty little head.
1. Social distancing and mask etc means that although the infection is still spreading, the viral load per infection is decreasing. Less viral load = more time for the body to build up antibodies while the virus tries to gain a hold. This in turn means less complications etc.
2. More testing = we are identifying way more positive cases than ever before, but they are mostly asymptomatic. This has the effect of increasing the detection rate, but the really serious infections are fewer because of 1 above.
3. Our medical experts are getting a handle on how to treat this thing. Some tried and true methods for treatment are helping to keeping the reaper at bay.
Or 4. And perhaps most worryingly, there is a lag effect and we are about to see a spike in the death rate.
I am hoping for 1,2 and 3. Any other thories?

Trying to sort things out by removing double positives (tested positive outside of hospital and tested positive in hospital). Sensible, but surprising it's taken this long to actually sort.
