I also think that nowadays, the main advice I’d give to young folk is that whatever they choose now isn’t what they’ll do forever. Most people even of my generation (born in the 70s) are having multiple different careers, except maybe where it’s vocational e.g. medicine, law, although even then people are getting out in their forties and fifties.
Do the high stress stuff when you’re in your twenties and thirties because it’ll kill you in your forties and fifties.
If you want to change, change. In the long run your kids will prefer to have happy healthy parents for longer than one more new game console In twenty years and a dead father.
Edit - although my primary piece of advice to young people is ‘don’t be a dick’. It covers most things.

Same advice i have given my son and others, if you hate it, dont be there. You have to decide what your priorities are, if its raking as much cash as you possibly can in, but the trade off is a job you hate, i have no sympathy, you chose that particular bed to lie in, dont fucking complain to me about it. Personally, i would trade off a bit of cash for enjoying the 30% of my life i spend at work.

It’s difficult for many people though. Because some people do love every minute of their job. Just through the luck of the hand life has dealt them.
But then others who aren’t so lucky see that and ask, naturally enough, “Why can’t I have that?”
When it comes to job satisfaction, the grass actually is often greener on the other side of the fence.

Fairly important but in reality I think you do have to sacrifice some enjoyment for stress / drudgery to earn some decent wonga.
Being a travel writer might sound nice but in real life being a broke travel writer might not be so ace.

I’ve had a full year of hell, twice in my career and then things change (also known as; cunts leave). If I’d have left, I wouldn’t have achieved what I’ve achieved and gotten the fulfilment stuff I mentioned earlier.

Enjoy is a strong word, with a lot of emotional content. I'm not sure that it's important that I enjoy my job. But I think I have to find it interesting or challenging. I don't think I could cope particularly doing something exceedingly monotonous or repetitive, although I'm well aware that many people have to do jobs like that

Oh most definitely! But, I always am upfront nowadays with dickheads at work - I'm too grizzled to put up with it.
Easier to head them off at the pass than let it fester

It's all very well finally copping on to the importance of STEM to a healthy modern economy; but if the parents who did the graft to get a STEM qualification, watch gobshites get ahead, & earn more, without having to do the hours they do; they'd be worse parents if they didn't tell their kids to skip STEM, & to take the gobshite career path, because that would ultimately be better for their career.
It's the usual case with Politicians; ignore what they say; watch what they do !

It's all resourcing. Why do the job with two people when you can get away with one and replace them after they've cracked up?
Nothing has blown up yet so it must be the right way to do things!
That said, I'm sitting on the couch with the five year old watching videos about high voltage electricity so there's little doubt about where he'll be ending up.
