Holdsworth is truly insane. Vai said upon Holdsworths death that he can understand when he hears someone play, and what they are doing, what modes or theory they use (even if he cannot play the song, he understands its mechanics). But with Holdworth he had absolutely no clue what the hell he was doing . He was a complete mystery and in a world of his own. Just out there. Also (I learned recently) if Alan heard someone had learned and performed a song of his (no matter how famous ut was), he would never play it again.

Paganini is hard (understatement of the year) my picking is awful now, think I had times when I think I have mastered it..but always struggle to expand on it and take it to areas it needs to go... Thought I could conquer paganini by sheer force of will, I could get some serious levels of autistic focus going when I wanted to learn a song back in the day...just sheer determination and commitment.. but with Pags..when four note arpeggios start on the bottom G note on the E string and go up to the top C note on the top E string and you have to hit two notes in between going up and back down, in the blink of a eye.. you really start to think maybe a short little necked violin is the right tool for this shite.

I really try not to play other peoples songs (anyone can play anything if they put their minds to it) now and think of the guitar as just a means of personal expression and for improvisation.
I try to get as much fucking fun out of it as possible.

Well, none of that makes me think that you are a crap musician! It sounds like you have exactly the right attitude - it should always be fun!

I watched a Jason Becker vid once - never again. At least with Holdsworth I have no idea at all, with Becker's classical stuff I kind of understand what he's doing, I just can't understand how he plays it so well.

Surprise - and yet rewarding - youtube video of the day is Michael Batio teaching jazz progressions. Some very nice stuff in there!

Read somewhere Yngwie Malmstien quit school at 6 years old and just played guitar. His parents said OK, if that is what you want to do, and you are sure about it, go for it.
That is the advantage a lot if these young kids had.

Nah musicians should just stick to the circle of fifths and common chords, keep it nice an' predictable

Anyway, probably thanks to this thread I had a weird dream last night I was on some sort of old tanker and turned a corner and found a small guitar shop tucked away with load of Martin acoustics. Of course I felt the need to pick one up and show my chronic lack of ability to even put two chords together...

It isn't about being predictable, it is about music that I enjoy and which gives me an emotional response. Jazz just doesn't do it for me. Just like the trend for female singers who sing what sounds more like a warm up exercise than a tune doesn't or how the typical output of Shrapnel Records didn't in the late 80s.

Fair enough, I have no liking for female singers who warble up and down octaves every other line, and tend not to listen to guitar "showcase" artists like Steve Vai for example.

I had to learn a bit of jazz for my music course, back in ze day, because apparently killing yourself and learning to perform Satch Boogie, Surfing With an Alien, Flying in a Blue Dream, Crushing Day, Always with You Always with me, For the Love of God, Liberty and Sisters (note perfectly) barely gets you a BTEC National Diploma in Performing arts.

Hah, I'm not arguing, his thinking was that I know all these impressive songs, had all the technical ability* (*read just lots and lots of sheer autistic determination) but had zero knowledge of the scales or chords that went into making them and no real interest in learning them.
My general thinking was violinists in orchestras etc don't have to know how to write Beethoven or Mozart stuff, they just knock it out, and everyone is impressed, claps and showers them in cash and pussy, and the same was true for guitar playing, and actually, for lots of guitarists it is.

But hey ho, it was all getting me laid at the time and I thought I was brilliant.

Ironically I left with grade 5 music theory from other classes.

He just couldn't get his uninspiring Jazz chords into my brain.

Afterwards I learned a lot of the modes etc from Frank Gambali books and tapes.

Talk about eating way too much Creme Brulee.

Fair play! I love Sisters, btw - that could be my fave Vai track. So gentle and intricate and melodic, just a perfect bit of music, I think. Slows down a bit... then goes again! It's got all the tricks. I mean, if he had been REALLY clever, he would have added a harmonic squeal dive-bomb in there for comedy value, but who am I to critique a master.

Performed it (and many others) in the Angel in Neath in about 1993. I remember practicing it specifically in the morning in my mates flat ( bedroom) accoustically , before I had to go on, and it was just one in a set list of about six extremely hard songs, that I had ready.
Half the class were of course running sweepstake to see which one I was going to fuck up. hah.
Loved Neath. The people there were just the best.
Had it all at the time, a fantastic music and performing arts, theatre scene there and terrific music teachers.
Funny enough I went back in about 1995 and I had a girl come up in a pub, and say to me "you are that guy who performed sisters a few years ago". She didn't remember the other five awesome gawdamned songs I learned.
My Mrs was well impressed though that someone remembered me perform, three years prior.

I really like the little guitar shop (‘The Music Shop’) in the covered market in Neath, always get my strings and bits and pieces from there now - would be cheaper to order them online but I’d rather support a local business.

I recently got Bias FX 2 which allows you to mimic different amp and pedal set ups. Really loving it. Going to take me ages to work ti all out properly. But even just playing with the presets, of which there are many, is good fun. So many tones!

I've made a couple of acoustics guitars under the tutelage of a good luthier. I've also got several in various stages of construction, but I need to find some workshop space in order to complete them and make more.
