Probably why I liked it, I didn't really get the hype around The Lobster and didn't bother with the other one as a result.

Because of the Weirdos thread I dropped in on the other place and noticed they were doing a best films since 2010 thread. I scurried off to IMDB to see which films I've rated would make the cut. It struck me that out of goodness knows how many films I've watched that were released since then (at an average of 3 per week I'd guess) I've only rated 27 as 8 or 9 stars (no 10s).
That doesn't feel like many at all, so I pondered why? My viewing skews towards comedy, dramedy and horror where most films tend to slot somewhere along the mid-range of 5 to 7, but I'm also likely a much harsher judge of quality than I used to be and much more prepared to give something a like a lower score.
Anyway, for the sake of playing along with their thread, in no particular order, these are the best films I've watched since 2010:

Should've been clear, it was a top 10. Otherwise I toss in the likes of Four Lions, Scott Pilgrim, Marth Marcy May Marlene, Dredd and The Nice Guys too. Maybe The Raid and the recent Mad Max.
Never actually watched Frank, but Winter's Bone is a good call. A rare film that lives up to the cracking book it's based on.

Frank is something a bit special really. There's a serious tone shift about 2/3 way through and that's where it becomes the filum that sticks with you.
Lenny got loads of plaudits for The Room but it's really Frank that's his masterpiece.

Favourite directors?
Michael Mann jump to mind. Not especially prolific but massively influential filmmaker in the 90's. Heat and LOTM are masterpieces and still hold up today.
Special mentions to Manhunter and Collateral where he managed to make the Cruiser (who I usually detest) watchable.

There aren't many directors whose name alone will capture my interest or whom I particularly follow, but Ben Wheatley and Edgar Wright would definitely be among them.

Nope. I've noticed that the critical consensus is very positive. Reading between the lines I think if your pal has enjoyed Denis Villeneuve's other recent work, they'll probably get a lot out of it.
Of the films of his I've seen Prisoners and Sicario were great, Arrival had a lot of ideas, but is deeply flawed and Blade Runner 2049 was just ok. Based on that I'm not dying to see another sci-fi from him.

A mixture of dancing around other release dates in the Anglosphere (Shang Chi and Bond mainly) and positioning it closer to awards season without running at the same time as all the awards bait dramas at the end of the year afaik.

Just finished Underwater. Pleasantly surprised as I wasn't expecting much. Kind of like The Descent, but at the bottom of the ocean.
Which got me thinking about the most claustrophobic films I've ever seen. This one has to be up there along with The Descent. Above So Below only has a couple of parts, but they are so claustrophobic that I had to take a little break afterwards and Alien certainly has its moments. Buried is the king of such films though.

Interesting. Where I've come across them in the comics they've been the sort of sci-fantasy element I think Marvel cosmic can really do without.
I'm pretty burnt out on the MCU in general. Waited a couple of years to watch Endgame, didn't think much of it and haven't watched anything released after it.

It would have to, from the MCU stuff so far only the Guardians might've had a half a chance of encountering them.

I assumed the title was based on a parody of Irish pronunciation. Anyway, filum with a single L would be the same as phylum i.e. nothing like film or fill-em at all.
Interestingly, the Boomtown Rats' current tour starts with a 10 min intro. film taking the p*ss out of cinema (complete with own mickey (ahem) take on Pearl and Dean) and the captions all use fiLLums.

Finally seen Dune and thought it a wonderful spectacular, just a shame we've got to wait for a part 2.
Pretty sure I gave up on the book before the story got to the point it's at but remembered half way through that a friend had an overcomplicated Dune board game.

I liked the David Lynch Dune but it took about 3 watches for me to have a clue what was going on - visually it's wonderful but the story is a mess. I then read all the books and have been hoping for a decent version ever since.
My cousin is in the new Dune so that's another reason for me wanting it to be good

Not read the book, and yer Sci Fi usually leaves me cold (never made it all the way through Alien(s?), e.g.), but really grokked Dune (man). Big film. Wore its bigness with some grace, an’ all.
If I entered the third Millennium of dry-wanking on an (almost) deserted, er, desert island, the only XY possessor*** I’d consider violating would be young Timotheeeeeeeee

Just been to see Bond. How the fuck after sitting there for nearly 3 years and having been released weeks ago did I have no idea about the ending!

I've watched a bunch of middling fare recently, none of it really worth mentioning.
However, for the first time in two years according to my Odeon account, I'm going to the cinema tomorrow to watch Last Night In Soho. Looking forward to is as a big fan of Edgar Wright. Interested to see how he handles something that looks to be a lot straighter than his usual fare which tends to be fairly humour soaked.

Just watched Under The Skin. So dull and tedious that even seeing Scarlett Johansson in the buff fairly frequently wasn't worth the run time.
Last Night In Soho was, a slight wobble deep into the third act aside, a good haunting movie. Wright's directorial flair and inventive set pieces really steal the show. He's one of few directors whose movies I'll watch to see what he does rather than for the actors and plot. Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy were both extremely good playing time displaced polar opposites. Despite neither being English they had tip top accents which makes it a lot easier to focus on their acting chops.
Ther Wrong Turn reboot wasn't a total waste of time. Developed a permeating atmosphere of threat with some grisly body horror chcuked in at times, though the whole premise doesn't work if you think about it for 5 minutes. Could've done with being shorter too.
Kate was more fun than I expected for a Netflix project, although this trend for action movies with waifish women at their heart is a bit silly. As much as I love Mary Elizabeth Winstead, she's not someone who looks like her punch is going to concern the average bloke, let alone a bunch of Yakuza footsoldiers. Ploughing through them endlessly in full on hand to hand brawls while she's supposed to be suffering from acute radiation poisoning strains credibility just too far.

Watched Matrix Resurrection last night and it's confusing as the others.
Fans of them will love it no doubt and they are constantly referenced and it's very clever but seemed to be trying too hard.
Confusing in another way too,
Didn't get it enough to want to try again, but 2 1/2 hours of non stop action I should have wanted to?

Wrath of Man. Shite. Statham is well…..Statham. But the story and dialogue is miles from the earlier stuff by Guy Ritchie.
