No doubt about that. He couldn't perform like this otherwise, but you just feel that at this stage he should have more to his life than wrecking himself to get to the third round of grand slams. He has nothing to prove.

I just think he loves playing and sees all the time left out there as a bonus. The on court interview with him after the match was one of the best I have ever heard.
“It was a pet, not an animal. It had a name, you don't eat things with names, this is horrific!”
Much much more glorious than sad imo.
I think for a lot of sportsmen particularly at the very highest level, there’s both a burning desire and at his age more than twenty years of driving yourself to the very last drop. Someone like him knows how much they’ll regret it if they stop too early. They’re less likely to regret having one year too many.Blackmac wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 5:54 pmNo doubt about that. Personally I think it’s a joy to watch him, and doing what he’s doing now, after what he’s been through, is probably as much if not more of an achievement than his big wins.
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
I remember an interview with his mother who said she couldn't watch him train because of the pain he put himself through, it was too upsetting for her to watch.
I think Telfer would be telling him to pack it in. He is kidding himself with his comments that he thinks he can still do a lot of damage in Grand Slam when the reality is he is half killing himself to get to the second or third round.
He has health issues, insane amounts of money and a loving young family but instead of spending time with his wife and kids during some of the most enjoyable times he will have with them, he is away for weeks on end at tennis tournaments.
Watching him celebrate his first point against serve, well into the second set, like he had won the match was awful.
With 28 single Grand Slams, 22 doubles Grand Slams, and three Paralympic gold medals, a genuine GOAT has retired.
Hats off to Shingo Kunieda.

It's a personal opinion mate, you don't have to be such an angry little prick about it.LenCohen wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 11:54 amWhat a load of pishBlackmac wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:09 amI think Telfer would be telling him to pack it in. And what is actually incorrect about what I said.
I remember when David Sole retired due to some arseholes in the SRU and their jibes about him and Finlay Calder pushing for professionalism (they called them "a cancer at the heart of rugby")
When Sole announced his decision Gordon Brown (fi Troon, no the PM) was on tv saying he should reconsider, and that "You're retired a long time"
Andy Murray seems to realise this and wants to eke out every ounce of being a Grand Slam player, he's overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to keep going after he hung up his racquet the first time.
Fair play to him, is my opinion. It would be different if he was scraping around the ATP 250s

Yeah I understand the desire but I think anyone of us who have grown up kids know how quick we feel they grew up and you realise it's a very short time you have with them. I personally would have given my right arm to spend more time with them when they were young and feel most dads will remember that more than the amount of time they spent at work.Tichtheid wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 1:52 pm I remember when David Sole retired due to some arseholes in the SRU and their jibes about him and Finlay Calder pushing for professionalism (they called them "a cancer at the heart of rugby")

Murray batters his way to the final in Qatar.
Saves five match points, a break down in the final set at 5-4 and 40-0 down on the other blokes serve, punches his way to a win. Astonishing stuff.
These younger guys are going to get a real inferiority complex, thinking ‘I can’t beat this guy when he’s 35 and had a hip replacement - and there were three guys better than him when he was my age’.

Your last part is so true. Incredible that 4 of the greatest players ever were knocking hell out of each other during the same era.Biffer wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 7:40 am Murray batters his way to the final in Qatar.

Yesterday’s Wimbledon final was a terrific watch. Despite the pre-match hype the first set was a walk over, but once Alcaraz settled down and found his range it became an epic battle, some of the hitting was the hardest and most accurate I’ve ever seen and from both players.
This wasn’t a burned out 36 year old desperate to relive past glories, Djokovic doesn’t seem too far, if anything, off his very best.
Alcaraz’s fitness last the full five sets and he was a worthy winner
This was his first but it won’t be his last Wimbledon title

Cracking final, wonderful, mind boggling tennis and the good guy won

Have to say I don't usually bother with Wimbledon or any tennis come to that but thoroughly enjoyed the final yesterdayTichtheid wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 6:25 am Yesterday’s Wimbledon final was a terrific watch. The doping aside, I reckon she has got a raw deal from the WTA and WADA. It was about 5 months ago she was suspended and they only ruled on her appeal now - most are heard within 6 weeks. She then got the harshest of penalties, which means they either didn't believe her 'accidental' claim, or they said 'f*ck you for showing us up'. She is also suing the manufacturer of the supplement, as apparently she even checked with them if it was possible there could have been 'an accident'. They said no, not their problem.BnM wrote: ↑Wed Sep 13, 2023 8:36 pm Halep banned for 4 years for doping

I'm not a Halep fan but think she's being hard done by.

Edut: And Serena putting the boot in with a tweet that just said "8 is a good number" or something. Referencing Wimbledon 2019 where Halep beat her.

Surprised this hasn't been bumped with Wimbledon on
The number one two and three priorities are her singles matches. If she or her team think the doubles will affect her chances she is absolutely right to ditch the mixed doubles, a title they weren't going to win anyway.
Murray is one of my all time favourite sports people, but he must understand - he never played doubles when he was going deep into Grand Slam tournaments.
I agree mostly, but she only agreed to do it a few days ago so you would hope her ream might have considered that previouslyTichtheid wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2024 7:37 pm

I don't know how much the rain backed games up and then with wanting to put Murray on a main court slotted their game into a late slot giving her less time to recover, also looking at her today she didn't look fresh. I get Murray would be frustrated, but I can't imagine he wouldn't have made the same call.Slick wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2024 7:42 pmI agree mostly, but she only agreed to do it a few days ago so you would hope her ream might have considered that previouslyTichtheid wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2024 7:37 pm

4th round probably isn't the stuff of dreams for her, but it's a solid performance after a lot of missed tennis
Yup, the report I mentioned didn't say anything about the backed up rain delays etcRhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2024 11:13 pmI don't know how much the rain backed games up and then with wanting to put Murray on a main court slotted their game into a late slot giving her less time to recover, also looking at her today she didn't look fresh. But clearly they've lost lots of time on the outside courts, so I merely wonder would that have contributed to pushing their prospective game later.Slick wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2024 8:19 amYup, the report I mentioned didn't say anything about the backed up rain delays etcRhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2024 11:13 pmI don't know how much the rain backed games up and then with wanting to put Murray on a main court slotted their game into a late slot giving her less time to recover, also looking at her today she didn't look fresh. Perhaps the mistake was accepting the invite in the first instance, but enough could have changed after that no criticism is warranted in a world that does see singles such a priority over the doubles. And really this feels like more criticism than Murray got for letting down Murray in the Beijing Olympics
Sorry, I’m agreeing with you. Subsequent to that first report I read I’ve see others that explain that because of rescheduling there was a good chance she would be playing until 11pm the night before her 4th round match.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2024 9:04 amBut clearly they've lost lots of time on the outside courts, so I merely wonder would that have contributed to pushing their prospective game later.Slick wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2024 8:19 amYup, the report I mentioned didn't say anything about the backed up rain delays etcRhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2024 11:13 pm

Not a tennis fan here but doubles (to my mind) has never had any sort of elevated status or equal billing to singles.
Its always seemed to me to be a bit of fun but nothing taken too seriously. Like a scratch rugby team or sevens outfit that's just out together for the craic.

Djokovic having a bit of a strop. Moans about people in the crowd supporting the underdog (because it sounds like they're booing him), then has a go at the journalists who asked him about it afterwards.
Maybe it's a bit much to expect these guys to be on top of their emotions all the time, but surely he's been doing this long enough to be able to cope with this kind of thing? He has plenty of supporters for sure, but he's never been as popular as Fed or especially Nadal, so he's always going to have much of the crowd supporting his opponent.
Still an amazing player though, especially after knee surgery just a few weeks ago.
