Yep, they've made a great start. Tough going for the batsmen.

I'm enjoying switching back and forth between the MCG test and this one.

The Pakistan pace bowlers look willing. I have to admit to not knowing much about this Pakistan squad.

Fifty up for the Captain, let’s hope both he and Taylor go on and get big hundreds...

I’m tempted to post $20 to the Blackcaps attentioned to Henry Nicholls with a return envelope and a note asking if he’d mind buying me a lotto ticket.

Just 87 overs, even with the extra half-hour is not acceptable.

Warnings needed at a minimum - prefer fines.

Or run penalties - something to give it some match play motivation.

Add the average over rate for the last 10~15 overs to the innings total as extras?

Stuff is going with the headline:

“Pakistan bomb lbw review as brilliant Kane Williamson leads Blackcaps’ fightback”

Is that unintentionally edgy?

Pakistan bowled well, but haven't helped themselves in other ways — Williamson's had as many lives as Nicholls got against the Windies.

50 up for Nicholls. With Taylor hitting 70 it looks like Conway and Young will have to wait for a chance - unless they are shoehorned into the second opening spot which could become the most tenuous. This is a rare spot of batting depth for the Blackcaps.

Looks like a beautiful morning at the Mount. Let's hope the forecast of afternoon thunderstorms and hail doesn't eventuate.

I find this current commentating team really painful to listen to. Brendan McCallum and someone else?

A nice line of storms going over Hamilton now and heading East. Heavy rain but not lasting too long - touch wood

This Pakistan team are enthusiastic, and look well drilled, but are missing world class players. Elite players with both bat and ball. How many members of this Pakistan XI would be genuine contenders to make a current World XI.

Strange that Williamson didn’t back the review there as Nicholls is out “caught” off the forearm only.

Does anyone want to take a stab at a current world XI? I don’t follow closely enough and would embarrass myself.

That’s a great catch to claim Williamson. 281-5 and Pakistan will be eying a sub-350 total.

This is just the second test here, if the stats guru on Cricinfo is correct

Not enough data to really establish a precedent for a good score.

Generally speaking anything over 350 is a good 1st innings score.

I think most teams would be very happy with 350-400 runs on the board having been put into bat.

Gee, that ball reared off a reasonable length. Reminded me of the Blake Park strip (Bay oval is part of that) in the 80s when the tide was in.

383/7 now. Southee is here so hold your breath

That’s some way to bring up the 400 - Wagner bowled by a cracker only for the replay to result in a no ball.

NZ all out for 431. Have to be happy with that.
