Absolutely, prior to the race I was thinking Dina was a good bet for 6th, she ran a good race, what a shame that she couldn't cling on in the last few metres.weegie01 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 8:03 pmAlthough Asher Smith was no more than an outside bet for a medal, this is happening a bit too often for comfort for the UK medal total. Both her and Neita (in the 100) missed bronze by the narrowest of margins. It's heartbreaking, they are a pair of very likable ladies.
weegie, is there any discipline that we have overachieved?
I don't know what expectations were on a sport by sport basis. Chatting to BOA officials before we came back they were worried in general terms that there were too many near misses, but were hoping it would change. It hasn't.Hugo wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 8:14 pmAbsolutely, prior to the race I was thinking Dina was a good bet for 6th, she ran a good race, what a shame that she couldn't cling on in the last few metres.weegie01 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 8:03 pmAlthough Asher Smith was no more than an outside bet for a medal, this is happening a bit too often for comfort for the UK medal total. Just checking the news around and about in Oz, apparently still on about gold medals won days ago, and the world being outraged by the Boomers being out of medal contention. People actually have interest in this shite? In news, well down the page - below the folding line, Free Russian forces invade Russion territory near Kursk, and some racist shit going down elsewhere. Thank god news Oz have their priorities right.

Great Britain hit a 49-year low in Tokyo. 2 medals , one Silver , one Bronze.
Team GB had led the rowing medal table for the last three Games: in Tokyo, they were 14th.
The current GBR rowing team is in transition, with all bar eight athletes making their Olympic debut in Paris ( out of 42 ) in 10 separate boats.
8 of those boats won medals , 3 gold , 2 Silver, 3 Bronze, GBR second in the rowing medal table behind the Netherlands , although we won the same number of medals as the Dutch.
GBR surpassed their previous best medal haul for an overseas Olympics.

My annoying Dutch colleague is now extremely confident that team NL will finish ahead of team GB in the medal table. This will make him insufferably smug. Irritatingly he's probably right. The men's hockey team are certainties to win gold, Lavreyson will win 2 more in cycling, one of the sailing classes is guaranteed gold, Femke Bol is odds-on in the 400m and Hassan is very highly rated in 10k and marathon. They have other strong chances too, like the women's hockey team. Depends what happens in track cycling, GB have good chances in several more events. I assume there's a chance in sailing, we often get something there.S/Lt_Phillips wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 10:13 pmMy annoying Dutch colleague is now extremely confident that team NL will finish ahead of team GB in the medal table. But nothing from boxing, taekwondo, or other sports we often get something in is a blow to the overall position.

Medal chances for men's laser & mixed mutihull, but too far back to get gold. Women's kitesurfing is the only gold medal chance left, and I think that one is a sudden-death final like the windsurfing, and with unpredictable winds, anything could happen there.Biffer wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 10:49 pm

Hopefully Emma Finucane will do well in the women's sprint, (track cycling) but I think both pursuit teams will get silver.

Just on the topic of medals, the boxers missed outy by some tight margins. The scoring has always been a bit impenetrable to me, but it seemed on another day we might have had a few more finalists.
No idea if this has been posted, I'm not really following the olympics much, but there was a fun nerdy stat posted on reddit.
If they were still using starters pistols, instead of the wired in speakers behind each runner, then Noah Lyles would likely not have won the 100m, as the time it would have taken the sound to get to him, vs 2nd place, would have been greater than the difference between them at the finish!

Some shenanigans in the 5k - the French runner Hugo Hay knocked over George Mills on the home straight and he took out a few other runners o his way to the deck.
Mills is the son of ex-footballer Danny Mills, himself no shrinking violet, so like a chip off the old block he had a few words with Hay the finish line. Not quite the Olympian spirit.

Didn't look all that much to cause the falls and as has been said Mills had got himself in a bad position, but the race officials obviously saw enough to make that callSandstorm wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 11:42 amCouple of dodgy elbows by the Frenchie there.inactionman wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 11:25 am Some shenanigans in the 5k - the French runner Hugo Hay knocked over George Mills on the home straight and he took out a few other runners o his way to the deck.

Hay definitely gave a couple of nudges and enough to catch Mills slightly off balance I guess. As you say getting into the sprint at that stage and camera angles don't help to clarify much. Hay did looks just a little contrite though when confronted..Slick wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 12:13 pmThey were going pretty fast to be fairtabascoboy wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 12:11 pmDidn't look all that much to cause the falls and as has been said Mills had got himself in a bad position, but the race officials obviously saw enough to make that call

Last nights was shocking. Richardson ahead after two rounds and by everyone's account, won the last but certainly didn't lose enough for the deficit to be overturnedinactionman wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 8:32 am Just on the topic of medals, the boxers missed outy by some tight margins.
