It's exactly because of our physical dominance that we are the only team that continuously challenge the AB's. No other team have even come close. I'm not talking about Dean Greyling red mist stupidity here. Striking, head butting and shoulder charging is not physical dominance. Getting into your opponents head space is vital and your not going to do that cowering scared behind a ref every time a bit of rough and tumble comes around.

While I understand where you are coming from, there is a massive difference in physical intimidation between what England did to NZ and a bit of handbags.

Exactly. Nobody gets intimidated by handbags. If you can rile up an opponent to such an extent that they start pushing and shoving you off the ball, then you've already won half the battle.
You are in their head and they are not focused on the game. That's what made players like Sean Fitzpatrick so annoying to play against; he just knew how to wind up the Bok forwards.
If you're lucky, you get them annoyed and lacking focus. If you're really lucky you get them to do stupid things and concede penalties. And if you are really, really lucky, you can goad them into a punch, elbow or headbutt and get them carded.
That's what I liked about Rassie's team culture. As Lukyanyo Am said in Chasing The Sun; they would be "silent bullies". No argie-bargie, no handbags, no off the ball nonsense.
We will just smash you and hurt you in the tackles to such an extent that you are just trying to survive out there and cope with the relentless physical onslaught...tackle after tackle, ruck after ruck.
There are more than enough legal ways to hurt somebody in rugby. You are better off, with all the eyes on the field nowadays, just to let the officials deal with foul play and channel your aggression into the gameplan.

I laughed every time during Chasing the Sun in the pre-game planning meetings Rassie always said to the players that the gameplan for this match is to physically dominate. Always within the boundaries, but they must be afraid to make contact. Call it what you will, but that is a strength of SA rugby, that's what we're used to and what we're good at. Long may it continue.

This can all be summed up by PSdT's performance in the final. His tackling was another level.

It was quite amusing
Every pre-match talk: "I want you to fuck them up physically". Even in the Wales game where he was leaning in another direction, he changed his mind at the last second.
I like that too. It's a strength of our game that few other nations can match. It's just important that we keep things legal and and controlled, because it can become a massive liability when executed recklessly.
Also, we need a Plan B when we run into the occasions where a NZ or England or France get parity up front. Hopefully Rassie and JN will be working on that for the next 3 years in the build-up to our title defense in France.

How do you reckon Fitzpatrick got Bok players to lose their shit? There's always some sort of mental gymnastics going on of the ball in rugby. It's not necessary to do something obvious like dropping an elbow on a prone players face but there's a lot of other ways to get in a players head. Fok, just a few words whispered in a players ear in the ruck can make him lose his shit or instil fear and make him hesitate when next he sees you coming.

Are you surprised that a bunch of Saffers just out of isolation were difficult to rile up? We had a shit-tonne of baggage we carried around (no, I don't mean Kobus Wiese) and the Kiwis knew how to make us lose focus.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned. I like Nienaber a lot. I think he is an excellent technical analyst and the players seem to like and respect him a lot.
But it's a massive shift moving from the sideline into the coach's chair. I know Rassie will be there to support him and I really wish him the best, but there is no denying it's a massive gamble and I really hope we haven't set Nienaber up for failure.
Expectations are sky high, and he has zero experience in that role. I hope and trust he'll grab his opportunity.

This should be good...I can't wait to see how Sard tries to make the argument that Jake White's territory + lineout based gameplan (which became infeasible when the kicking laws were changed in 2008) is the same as Rassie's zone strategy + outside in defensive pattern.
Rassie loves some forward dominance and big collisions. Under Jake we had some of the softest Bok scrums that I can recall and the only forwards that relished some contact were Bakkies and Burger and Danie Rossouw. Other forwards weren't really known for they physicality...Matfield, Andrews, Smit, Wannenburg, Davids, Spies, Joe van Niekerk. Good players sure, but not in the same level as the players Rassie selected when it comes to sheer physicality on the pitch.
