Stormers lineout has been a mess all season. Bulls have one of the best in the business.
Marcel Coetzee has been massive all season.
Stormers without Zas gives the Bulls the edge in the back 3 IMO.

Here we go...
You don't know your rugby. I meanwhile have supported the Stomps once in my life, and have a URC title.

Enjoyed seeing Morne Steyn come on at the end, needing more than a kick, trying to get a backline working.
Dankie Ox, you were fantastic!

Congratulations Stormers!

A very entertaining for neutrals. But the main difference to me was the back row; the Bulls trio were missing in action whilst Roos and Fourie ran riot. I also though replacing Burger with Papier was a huge mistake, he had a howler when he came off the bench.

The yellow card looked dubious, contact was with his arm and slid up but didn't even think he made contact with his head.

What a tournament. What a result for South African rugby

Yes boys! I was very concerned early doors, but we managed to pull through. So happy for Dobson and the players, performing despite the trouble in the boardroom.

Chin up viking.

He struggled since back from injury. He secured lineout possession at 2 which was very important against the Bulls. Very effective on defense and in the rucks.

Marcel Coetzee, Louw and Botha disappeared last night. Totally outplayed by Fourie at the breakdowns. That's where we won it.

It's bizarre. Perhaps it was the travel to Ireland and back that had an impact.

Fourie was excellent. I can't believe how he's been out of radar for all these years. Just shows what some good coaching abroad can do.

They started fading after half an hour . I think it was too much in too short a turnaround. Remember they had to do stay till after the Stormers match last week. I think we have to look at the Leinster match in perspective. I don't think the Stormers would win there. The Bulls back row performances for the season have been phenomenal. Look how many tries Marcel accumulated. That's a forwards dream season.

Took out some emotional insurance before the match to hedge my bets. Glad it ended the way it did, but very surprised the Bulls couldn't repeat the disruptive lineout work that sealed them the match against Leinster. If they had, we'd have been in trouble. Not complaining at all though; happy to be wrong in this case.
It would've been more in the Stomps favour if it wasn't for conditions/the pitch. Bulls did nothing to the Stomp scrum and Stomp lineout/maul was dominant, took some of the first half for them to get into it, but over the whole 80 minutes that's what it looked like. Conditions/slipping then prevented getting the backline working properly, but the Stomps had planned for that and were much better kicking from hand.

Some good players for the Bulls though. I think it was around the 52 minute mark, when Zak Burger was absolutely everywhere for a few phases.
The Stormers scrum has not been overwhelming for most of the sides this season. Most of the top sides held them. Subbing Zak was a poor tactical move. Papier looked as bad as Herschel.

“Well done to John Dobson – he said he wanted to beat me, and he beat me! But geez, it hurts hey, it hurts.”

White also didn’t want to use the fact that his team had to travel from Dublin as an excuse, although it was evident that the Bulls seemed to run out of legs in the final quarter.

Its going to be dry. A little bit of rain in the morning. No problem with drainage because its sand. That's why the turf is not holding together because its so sandy. Not because its wet. Expecting under 3mm tomorrow morning. Its a Netlon reinforced turf with the same rye and fescue grasses as Newlands. It has a very good drainage system with a moat that can handle big rains. All that said its not standing up well. to scrumming. A hard problem to fix though. It was designed for soccer.
edit: I think Newlands is a kikuyu and rye mix. So a much tougher turf.
I see the moat worked well to keep out those filthy Bulls supporters.

Congrats visvreeters. My team once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the Curry so I don't have much to crow about today.

R4 – Friday, October 7 / Saturday, October 8 / Sunday, October 9

Edinburgh Rugby v Emirates Lions
Glasgow Warriors v Vodacom Bulls
This could be a cracking weekend if they schedule it appropriately.
