Whenever someone talks about politics when I'm in the US, and I'm being expected to say something, I tend to take the line of 'from an overseas view, what's astonishing is just how polarised your politics is. It's odd that there's only politicians at the extremes and no one represents the people on the ground who are more usually a bit more in the middle'. I was in NC a few years back on holiday, awesome place and great people providing you talk beaches, food, drink and the like, don't even think unless you know it's safe to venture into politics, religion/science, guns, the environment.
Unless you meet a true loony. Met a genuine honest to goodness flat earther once. Turned out to be an antisemite. What a surprise that was.
