Boris Johnson is a terrible prime minister and a worse human being.

But he is not a monster newly sprung from a rent between this world and the next. Twenty years have passed since the Conservative party first selected him as a candidate. Michael Howard and David Cameron made him a shadow minister, and Theresa May gave him the Foreign Office. Thirty years of celebrity made him famous for his mendacity, indifference to detail, poor administration, and inveterate betrayal of every personal commitment.

Yet, knowing this, the majority of Conservative MPs, and party members, still voted for him to be prime minister. He is not, therefore, an aberration, but a product of a system that will continue to produce terrible politicians long after he is gone.

MPs selected him because they would not risk the possibility of a smaller majority under a better leader. Winning mattered more than governing well. And the public often seems to share this indifference
I have loads of time for Rory Stewart. Would have made a good pm
Indeed.

It's interesting to ponder what would have happened if the Conservatives had elected an adult for their leader.

Can't see that informally being an issue with Starmer and Davey.
Hope so. Expecially if it means my mucker Sefton votes Lib Dem.
Lib Dems were 3rd here, Labour are the natural challengers now.
2019 was a bit of a self-inflicted wound for the Lib Dems though. OK, I had no problem with giving the electorate the opportunity to vote again for Brexit but it meant they wrote off their chances with 50% of the electorate.

Thread called stop voting for Tories and people are musing about this Tory - https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/24964 ... rder/votes - being prime minister?

I appreciate he's not Johnson, and is a clearly intelligent and articulate man, but looking at his voting record? Not for me.

I think it’s more a case that he has his set of principles and acts by them, even though I disagree vehemently with many of them. He also seems to be competent and professional. All of which is in contrast to the shaved monkeys currently in charge.

I can respect someone who I disagree with’s competence and ability while disagreeing with their beliefs.

It was an interesting observation somewhere above that Stewart is closer to the Lib Dems than the current Tory Party, when actually there's no chance Stewart is a Lib Dem. And actually there is an issue now for those who were somewhere in the one nation Tory tent about whom they vote for, there isn't anyone they can go for unless they happen to have a local independent who's likely a busted flush anyway. A similar problem the more centrist Labour inclined voter had back when Jeremy was running proposed foreign policy past the Kremlin for approval

It was incredible that both chief advisors in the last election (cummings and Milne) had spent significant time in Russia do good only knows what. Corbyn and Johnson are both large security risks for different reasons. Can't forgive Johnson for making Lebedev a lord.

Good reminder there that he is still a conservative, and he may not get my vote with his views, but you can at least envisage a proper political discussion between him and Starmer.

From what I remember he was the odd one out in the Tory leadership contest, by having decent arguments and some form of honesty and integrity. No wonder they tried to get rid of him.

As someone else above said: you may not agree with him on many things, but at least he makes a rational argument for his opinions, which is more than any of the creatures in the current cabinet can.
You can at least respect someone even if you disagree with them, but I could never respect any of the current government.

Also voting records mean very little in the UK due to the way our parties work. It would be much better if that wasn't the case.

Yep, undoubtedly he at times voted for things he didn't believe in (anything pro EU for starters). He also rebelled a lot which meant he was on shaky ground complaining when parts of the party rebelled against him.

Between 1997 and 2010 when Labour was last in power, Corbyn voted against his own party 428 times (more times than David Cameron managed) making him the second most rebellious Labour MP of all time, which made his demands for party loyalty when he was Dear Leader all the more laughable.

So now a Muslim female Tory MP has spoken up because her Muslimness was a reason she was sacked.
Surely there must be a proper investigation about Islamophobia in the Party.
She states she was told she did not do enougj to speak out for the Party in their repudiation of endemic Islamophobia by the Tories.

So they sack her.

Of course they deny this. Seems illegal to me.

Guess what, the Tory Party deny this.

All these sitting Tory MPs who make claims against the Party over bullying, blackmail and racism they have faced are beong called liars and branded fantacists.

Really? Given how detached from reality some of the grandees of the Tory party are? And their confidence that they’ll never get taken to task for anything given their wealth and background? And the way they elected a leader who’s regularly used openly racist tropes and never suffered for it?

It's one of the more far right parties we've had in a while, it's been in hock to UKIP and fostered plenty of anti-EU sentiment (which easily bleeds into xenophobia), there's been a problem with islamophobia in the party for ages - it's pretty believable to me. These are not quality people.
