Where is Ruan Botha nowadays? I remember signing for London Irish but I don't think he's there anymore.sunnybanana wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 9:40 pm We have the greatest depth of quality locks in the world.
Schickerling, Jenkins and Ruan Botha could all play test rugby tomorrow. They’d walk into other national teams.

Elstadt would be another option.
He will be great.boere wors wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 8:26 am He is probably the obvious choice, given his involvement with the boks up until the RWC. Though I dont know how he has been doing lately for Toulouse. And playing blindside, i guess?!
Springbok flank Rynhardt Elstadt has been ruled out of Toulouse’s crucial Champions Cup playoff against Munster due to the stringent quarantine protocols in Ireland.
During the French Top 14’s recent break in play between 13 and 27 March, Elstadt – with permission from Toulouse – had returned home to South Africa to complete his commercial pilot’s license exam.
Elstadt flew back to Toulouse and sat out their match against Montpellier this past weekend due to his mandatory 10-day isolation period and only returned to squad training on Monday.
But because of the Irish government’s new Covid-19 measures concerning people who had stayed in or travelled to South Africa, Elstadt is now considered ineligible to line up against Munster.
Ireland had imposed a period of fourteen days between when a person left South Africa and time of entry into Ireland. With Toulouse set to arrive in Limerick on Thursday afternoon, it will have only been 12 days since Elstadt left South Africa.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Toulouse coach Ugo Mola said: ‘There was provision for rest but the period is obviously not conducive to going to the beach. He had an exam to complete to become an airline pilot and was allowed to leave, with the understanding that would have to honour the French Health Ministry’s 10-day isolation rule.’
Assistant coach Alan Zondagh is in a similar position, having also travelled to South Africa during the break.
Toulouse have made the requests for permission to have both Elstadt and Zondagh with them for the round-of-16 knockout match in Limerick, but Champions Cup organisers and the Irish government denied their requests.
Mmmm.....with new laws and TMOs watching headshots like a hawk? Boks better start practicing to play for 55 mins with 14 if we start that thug.Chilli wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 7:46 amThisboere wors wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 11:33 pm Both du preez brothers have been playing great rugby the last years. Elstad at 4 would be brilliant
Agreed. Hard and uncompromising player, but a liability with dirty play.Sandstorm wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 8:55 amMmmm.....with new laws and TMOs watching headshots like a hawk? Botha’s in Japan. Watched a few of his games. Obviously less physical over there but he’s in a different league.assfly wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 6:13 amWhere is Ruan Botha nowadays? I agree with Blake that the du Preez twins' names should be and most likely will be in the mix for the Boks. Both of them have been playing in the 4-8 jerseys and they've been ripping up the premiership of late.
Of course we have some local talent but they're way off the mark. I really like JJ vd Mescht but he needs a couple of provincial seasons under his belt.
I'm with you, Botha and Lewies are much better options than Elstadt.sunnybanana wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 11:19 amBotha’s in Japan. Watched a few of his games. Lewies is another playing excellent rugby. Captaining a very good Quins side.
Not sure why people are mentioning Elstadt as an option at 4...
Elstadt played during that time for the Boks, he smashed the Wallabies on his own. Will be sad if players like him and van der Mest are told to be less physical. You need one lock to enforce , the other to be aerial. Luckily we have Etsebeth who plays both ways. I'll have JD with him but we need PoCs, so Moerat or Orie will get the nod probably.assfly wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 9:42 am It's a good point. The number of red cards refs are dishing out these days is incredible. Things you could get away with a couple of years ago are now getting put under the microscope at every break in play. We'll need our Boks to be squeaky clean, something I'm pleased that Rassie managed to achieve in 2018/9.
Same thing many said about players that left and made a name for themselves in Europe.
Even Rhule is getting huge plaudits on his game, he's playing 13 and he seems to have sorted out his defence.Blake wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 2:17 pm

Kolbe was the latest one and look how that turned out.
Sometime some seemingly average players just need some different coaches or structures or environments to develop to their full potential.
I really can't think of a single young player that didn't improve after a couple of seasons playing in the northern hemisphere.
Kak man! I was watching him like a hawk that whole match after all the hype coming from people that had seen him play well up North.OomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 1:59 pmElstadt played during that time for the Boks, he smashed the Wallabies on his own. He had a very quiet game and gave away his penalties like he always has.
Didn't show enough to make the cut and Rassie agreed.
The discipline issue is becoming more and more important as the refs are cracking down on dangerous play.
You are going to find less and less room for brainless hotheads that can't control their aggression on the field.
It's like Am said the Chasing the Sun...Boks will be silent bullies. No pushing and shoving and off the ball nonsense.
Just hit hard and hit legal and they opposition will break down due to physicality eventually.
We had the best disciplinary record at RWC2019 and it showed. We only had that one blip from Beast against Japan in QF and we were lucky it was only a yellow.
But there as no handbags or stupid temper tantrums like in past Bok teams...and without the release valve that penalties give the opposition we could continue to build pressure.
Elstadt is and always has been a massive liability, and currently Van Der Mescht is as well. He'll need to wise up and quickly.
Look how a world class player like Itoje managed to crash England's 6N campaign because he couldn't adapt.
The game is going to leave those players behind, regardless of how athletically gifted they are.
If he does, it's one more more than you.

He was a dreadful player. No idea how he got the Bok caps he did. He was fast, yes, but an all-round terrible player.
There's exceptions, like fokon Blommetjies.assfly wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 5:44 amHe was a dreadful player. No idea how he got the Bok caps he did. He was fast, yes, but an all-round terrible player.
Seems to have sorted himself out now and is playing 13, which must be testament to how he has sorted out his defence.
My point with him and with Lewies is that most players improve dramatically when they go and play overseas, yet still get judged on their form when they left SA. Lewies is good enough to be made captain of a title-chasing premiership club, and I've watched him play week after week for Harlequins. Would I put him in my 2021 Bok squad? No, but that's not to say his name won't me in the mix in a couple of seasons time.
Oh ja. Where did he go, one of the Welsh clubs? No surprises there then.
Would Rassie play PSDT at 5?
