I really cannot compute the extent to which the EU had dropped the ball on vaccine procurement.

With the variant identified in the UK now gaining traction elsewhere in Europe and no substantial vaccines numbers until the end of the year its going to get very grim.

Suggests that the UK may have in fact made the right choice by going alone for procurement?

At the time we were told it was English exceptionalism from a neo fascist government. The EU does a number of things very well, but on others has some serious defects. This would be one.

Not just on procurement. Germany wanted to increase its order of the Pfizer vaccine, but this was vetoed by France, and the EU agreed that equal numbers of the Pfizer and the vaccine being developed in France would be maintained. In this case, keeping French industry happy was considered more important than getting sufficient supplies of the Pfizer vaccine.

Of course, it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t english exceptionalism from a neofascist government. Hitler got the trains running on time, doesn’t mean his social policy was much whack.

So this press conference is all about defending the late action by the government.

Sorry, but if Whitty and Vallance only discussed and advised for further measures yesterday morning then they should probably reconsider their positions - the writing has been on the wall since just before Christmas. You could even debate 1-2 weeks earlier, when the new variant was officially announced, and many other European counties announced additional measures.

I imagine there's a reason the more honest Prof Van Tam isn't there today.

That was possibly one of the worst performances from the Blonde Bumblecunt! Talk about rabbit in the headlights, he was just plain awful and erodes rather than builds public confidence. His response to the girls question about her Mothers mental health was just plain bad, no empathy, no understanding, no real answers just 'we're spending millions of £££s, your money, somewhere or another on mental health, hmm, ehh, ahh ...'

He clearly isn't in command of his role and needs to feck off!

French economic protectionism. Good if you're French, but I have no idea why the rest of EU agreed to it.

Starmer didn't call for schools to be closed, he called for a November style lockdown and then said it's inevitable more schools do close.

I think he's realised schools will close and the media will pulverise him for siding with the unions? I don't know.
Slightly contentious theory here.

Is it possible that the schools were sent back for a day to 'mark' the end of the holidays and put them in the mindset of being at school? so they could crack on with on line learning?

My mistake, the question was worded on the lines of children trying to learn on mobile phones, specifically PAYG.

There should also be a laptop or tablet potentially available to those without access. However only about 50% to 60% of those promised in the first lockdown were actually delivered despite Williamson’s promises

Great idea! Lets have kids mix with lots of relatives and friends during Xmas and New Year, even if they were told not to, then come to school for a day potentially infected with an even more virulent version of the virus to meet friends and give them hugs and kisses and then send them home to infect mum, dad and granny. Its almost like the good old days of chickenpox parties, except this virus kills lots more folk. Even Trump couldn't match this super spreader event, and christ knows he has had lots of attempts!

Especially not after the PM announces 24 hours earlier that schools are to stay open and parents should send their kids in.

Teachers have to change plans, parents now have to sort out home schooling and work arrangements overnight, all the businesses have to postpone/cancel/alter plans and staffing etc. etc.

And whilst it was already clear by Christmas that there would need to be a full lockdown by NYE. It's really shockingly poor governance and 'leadership', especially since we've had over 9 months now to analyse, review and act on the data and the situations.
The centrists on PR are saying Boris has done well with a bad hand. What say you?

What are Kiwis thoughts on the 72 hour requirement for a negative covid test before coming here from the UK/USA?

I get the logic but it seems the MoH/Minister may have gone too short with the timeframe given the practicalities overseas. For example, results are only guaranteed within 72 hours in the UK but with check in times and opening hours, that may mean people cannot receive the result they need to travel within the specified period.

1 - it sounds like it's not stable when diluted, so likely not safe
2 - it needs to be delivered into a muscle
3 - you still need a qualified person to sign off on each dose - ensuring that there's no allergies, disqualifying conditions etc

You have to invert x10 slowly clean top of vial and neck of saline then draw up 1.8 mls of saline then inject into vial slowly not allowing needle to enter liquid then pull out 1.8 mls air then remove needle invert x10 then vial ready to draw up O.3 mls off each dose ready to inject !!
