So do we know who was the last Tory Chancellor who ate their own dog food, in terms of paying the taxes they levied ?

Sunak - No
Javid - No
Hammond - ?

Not sure Rishi demanding an enquiry into who leaked his wifes tax details is that smart :problem:

A bit like a burglar making a demand in court for a police search for his ‘grass’.

Historically, other than Cummings deciding he can seize phones and fire people, these go nowhere. Not least because everyone involved leaks like a sieve.

If help is coming for Rishi in this it might actually be from Cummings, he needs a worse story about Boris to shift attention back, and a bad story about Truss

Not disagreeing with your general point but his parents are Indian regardless of where they were born.

He could end up seriously regretting the Green card thing. US immigration make the Spanish Inquisition look like a lovely bunch of guys, & their default punishment for violating the conditions of your Visa, is to ban you for a very long time, or just forever.

This being a very public matter now, & the general feeling of the Democrats about the Tories, will make having it, just go away, very difficult.

He did; & so did his wife, & both of them violated the terms of the Visa, by leaving the country, & not notifying INS.

Him saying he's given it back is disingenuous too. There's a process for doing so, & it's not just a case of sticking it in the post to the US., & pretending he & his wife haven't broken US Immigration law, & potentially tax law.

Violated the terms of the green card and potentially broken US tax law.

And then there's the whole discussion about whether something is morally correct even if it's legally ok.

They left the Country for more than 60 days without notifying the INS*, & thru running for Parliament in the UK, demonstrated that they were not a Permanent resident of the US.

Green Cards are given to people on the express declaration that the holder will become a Citizen, or will surrender the Card. It's not a travel Visa, to make it convenient for someone to get into the US.

* I'm assuming this, but it seems a pretty safe bet.

Another by-election due fairly soon
A Conservative MP has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy at a party.

Imran Ahmad Khan, who represents Wakefield, had denied groping the teenager at a house in Staffordshire in January 2008.

Southwark Crown Court heard Khan forced the youngster to drink gin, dragged him upstairs and asked him to watch pornography before assaulting him.

Khan, 48, was found guilty after a week-long trial.

Will be interesting to see what the blow back from this is, other than the by election.

Apparently the complainant approached the Conservative party to make the allegation when he heard he was due to be a candidate.

Nice to see Labour doing something smart for a change.
No 10 unable to confirm whether other ministers have non-dom status

Downing Street has conceded that it cannot say whether any other ministers or their spouses have or have previously held non-dom tax status, or whether Boris Johnson will take any steps to find this out.

It came as Keir Starmer called on Boris Johnson to “bring this saga to a close” and say whether any other ministers had taken such efforts to reduce their tax bills.

No 10 has confirmed that Christopher Geidt, the independent adviser on ministers’ interests, is to examine the interests and declarations of Rishi Sunak, after the chancellor requested this to happen.

Johnson’s deputy spokesperson said that while the inquiry would look into declarations about the non-dom tax status of Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murty, it would not necessarily look at Sunak’s decision to maintain a US green card for a period as an MP and minister.

After it emerged that Murty does not pay UK tax on overseas earnings – which she has since agreed to do – the health secretary and former chancellor, Sajid Javid, said he had also held non-dom status for six years while he worked as a banker.

Asked if they could confirm that no other ministers or spouses were in the same position, the spokesperson said: “Ministers are required to make the relevant transparency declaration, but it wouldn’t be for me as an individual to know someone’s personal tax arrangements.

“The relevant transparency declarations are made. Some of those are made public, but where it can relate to private tax information, sometimes that isn’t made public, for the reason that it is private tax information.”

Asked if Johnson would now try to find out whether any ministers had formerly been non-doms – MPs and peers are barred from having the status – or any spouses still had it, the spokesperson said they did not know.

In a statement on Monday, Starmer said: “To appoint one chancellor with suspect tax affairs is sloppy, to appoint two is a habit.”

This is likely to be a rich seam of material for hammering home the; "One Rule for them", message, & keep reminding the voters about Partygate, & show it wasn't a temporary lapse, but the modus operandi of the Tories

If you judge right and wrong by what’s legal, then

Rishi Sunak did nothing wrong
The people who cheated out refurbishing and leasing Grenfell did nothing wrong
The slave owners did nothing wrong.

Right and wrong isn’t about legal and illegal. It’s not about whether or not it was within the rules.

It's all about appearances, like most modern Politics. It was all perfectly legal, but there's a damn good reason why they all concealed their tax avoidance schemes, & exit plans; & it's because they know exactly what the voters will think of them if they're made public.

What do they say ? If your explaining, you're losing

Sunak has been explaining for days now, & now the Tories as a whole are going to have to start explaining.

In the best of times voters don't like seeing different rules being applied; & in the middle of a cost of living crisis, they don't like seeing the Chancellor who raised taxes to the highest level in 60 years, having a billionaire wife, who didn't pay a penny in income tax, & pretends that's okay. It's makes them wonder how many others aren't paying their share, while they work full time, & still end up going to the food bank.

Non Dom status is like all of the tax avoidance schemes. Legal, because politicians want to exploit them. There's no way a tax loophole would be continued if the person exploiting it had a 50k base and no assets past a mortgage and ISA.

What a com plete dickhead!
On reflection I have decided to retract my statement defending Imran Ahmad Khan. I am sorry that my defenc of him has been a cause of significant upset and concer not least to victims of sexual offences. It was not my intention to do this.

To be clear I do not condone any form of abuse and I strongly believe in the independence and integrity of the justice system.

It is a particularly difficult time for LGBT+ rights across the world and my statement risks distracting the APPG for Global LGBT+ Rights from its important purpose. I have today offered the officers my resignation so a new chair can be found to continue the work of the group with full force.
