oh god yes, I'd rather have him than Hogg at 10! I just think Hastings is so far ahead as a 10, and can cover 12 and 15, that you have to have him in the squad. I wouldn't like to go into a game with Kinghorn as our back up 10.

What I'm talking about is having Kinghorn as Hastings' back up for the moment, but by this time next year, who knows where Kinghorn will be in the pecking order?
The problem with Kinghorn covering 10 for Scotland currently is goalkicking. You could make an argument for Kinghorn over Hastings and Thompson on form but would you trust him kicking goals in the six nations?

If we still had Laidlaw or a 9 who was his level kicker I think you could pick Kinghorn over Hastings who hasn't been amazing for Gloucester.

I tried to look up kicking percentages but I couldn't find them on the URC site, just bare numbers for successful penalties and conversions.

My feeling is that Kinghorn doesn't miss any you think a pro kicker should definitely get, but the touchline efforts often miss, especially from the right hand line, I've seen him pot them from the left side.
He has a huge range, I guess he needs to do a Johnny Wilkinson for a while and get the wide accuracy up to scratch.

Boffelli took over the kicking on Saturday, I assumed it was for two reasons, Kinghorn wasn't named in the first 1872 game due to a quad injury, and second Boffelli put in a great performance with the boot against Saracens, up to now Kinghorn has been first choice kicker when he's played

My memory of Kinghorn kicking is limited to Scotland Japan where he got a beauty from the touchline but missed kicks you need an international 10 to get.

I assume Bofelli is doing the kicking because he's the better kicker right now. If Kinghorn was first choice kicker he'd get the tee back.

Scotland Tonga?

I think that was his fourth start at ten in his pro career and he's never been first choice kicker until now. I'm not saying he's an international level kicker now, but I wouldn't bet against him becoming one. Jaco van der Walt led the goal licking stats in the league, if he wasn't playing then Simon Hickey kicked, Kinghorn is still learning everything about playing ten, but the improvement even in the last few months is phenomenal.

How often did Hickey and VdW play in the same team? I can't imagine ever as neither cover any other position? I assume obviously when hickey played he kicked as VdW was on the bench.

Sure he could get better at kicking (nothing stops a winger or 15 kick mind so if he's not always kicked that's something to be mindful). I think you can argue if all things being equal Kinghorn was a Hastings level kicker there's more of a discussion of Kinghorn as Russell's back up. I think you need a really good kicker at international level. Russell is shaky enough - it's a fairly clear weakness.

I imagine there probably wasn't much pressure/incentive for Kinghorn to work on his place kicking when Jaco, who is a very reliable goal kicker, was the regular 10, so it's a reasonable expectation that it will improve if it's become one of his core responsibilities and an area to work on. He's obviously not at international standard now.

I wonder what Ross Thompson's kicking stats are like this season? He seems to have been missing a few when I've tuned in to Glasgow games.

FM statement at about 2.15pm.

That's when we'll find out if we are likely to have a crowd for the Calcutta Cup.

Fingers crossed - even with a reduced crowd it would be an improvement! Remember they did lots of tests in the early days of the pandemic involving bringing crowds back into Murrayfield and elsewhere so there should be good evidence base that they are safe.

There's a bit of me thinking one of the reasons not to have small crowds in for the games during the restrictions was to show willing to Scot Gov. Hope it worked.

Sutherland gets 3 weeks. Think it was a pretty preposterous red card tbh, but so be it. Makes him available for the Calcutta Cup. He can also get a further week off if he completes the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Course (WTAF?) so could play in Worcester's game on the 29th - reckon that'd be good as he's been short of game time.

He's hardly played all season though, doubt he'll be fully match sharp for the Calcutta Cup.

Schoemann (T) has ben out for a while (although I think he might be approaching end of rehab), Cipriani has had concussion and covid and general knocks and not sure about Orlando Bailey - he's not in squad so assume crocked/covided.

I agree on the Home office and the Home Sec, but it's nothing new - Joanna Lumley was perhaps the most high profile campaigner for the rights of Gurkhas to stay in the UK after retiring from military service.

"We" are good at signing up Jonny Foreigner to risk their lives for the UK, but after they are useful, fuck 'em.
