Won't happen and we'll actually have to hire way more in the customs agents so we can finally start checking EU goods.

It's just a typically facile analysis and policy prescription by Johnson. Yes, bureaucratic bloat is a thing but there is something that happened in 2016 which might explain why the civil service has had a lot on since.

The Home Office also needs vast numbers more people for visa processing now as well.

They actually did get rid of many tiers of civil servants back then, and what happened was they found they had lost thousands of "man-years" of experience and knowledge, so they had to buy in consultants at private sector prices.

They are fiscally incompetent, no other description.

Some are incredibly dogmatically opposed to the idea of anything being in state hands while others know the price of everything and value of nothing.

I'd expect this to mostly be yet another dead cat. There are few areas that could stand to lose many civil servants.

Even if attempting to privatise the functions most of those 90,000 perform there would be a substantial gap in service while that's all sorted out (not even going into the gap in service when state functions are privatised due to the penny-pinching 'efficiency' of the private sector...) of the kind that would upset voters. Whether they correctly attribute the blame would remain to be seen, though, I guess. A depressing number still don't seem to have identified the Tories as the source of most of their ills.

To be clear: without these civil servants you will not be able to effectively help our country recover from the pandemic, nor tackle the cost-of-living crisis. It will also not be possible to achieve your levelling up ambitions
As Brexit and then the pandemic hit, ministers repeatedly found that government had too little capacity to deal with major challenges, due to the big cuts in public services that have been made since 2010. These proposals risk doubling down on this mistake, and ultimately costing government more in the long run.
Prime Minister, we are a union known for constructive engagement and finding solutions through dialogue, but we cannot go on like this. You are risking the future of the very civil service who saw the country through the pandemic crisis and who you relied on. Your combination of real terms pay cuts, attempts to reduce redundancy terms, and now huge job reductions will destroy morale which has already been adversely impacted. It’s time to change course and work with your civil servants, rather than being in opposition to them.

Jack Monroe to sue MP after he says ‘she makes fortune from the poor’


Jack Monroe has instructed libel lawyers after the Tory MP Lee Anderson alleged the writer and food blogger was profiteering from the poor.

Monroe, who won a rancorous, high-profile libel action against the former Daily Mail columnist Katie Hopkins in 2017, tweeted that the MP’s comments were a “very clear cut case of outright libel”.

Although not confirmed, the lawyer in question could be Mark Lewis who pioneered the phone-hacking claims that led to the closure of the News of the World.

In a separate tweet, Monroe reached out to him: “got a job for you pal”.

The row began after deputy leader of the Reclaim Party, Martin Daubney, posted a clip of an interview he had conducted with Anderson.

At the start of the clip, Daubney refers to Monroe as the “self-appointed representative of the impoverished”, adding she has “sold loads of books. Done quite well out of it. No doubt, probably earns more than the prime minister”.

Anderson responds by stating: “She’s taking money off some of the most vulnerable people in society and making an absolute fortune on [sic] the back of people.”
