Whatever else in terms of the quality of decision making, bunker system or no, we are seeing no evidence of players modifying behaviour. Just more reds and injuries.
Needs bigger punishments before that changes.
Notable that last night was extremely physical, brutal, and punishing but no high tackles.
I'm doubtful that will alter anything. These reds are costing sides games and in the most important comp there is.

Referees need to grow a pair and make a decision instead of contracting it out to the bunker
Predicted it as soon as they brought the bunker system in, we're only going to see on field reds for stuff like obvious punches or head butts from now on.
Does it matter? Assuming they don’t cock up the call here
Exactly, we get better decisions without the waiting around and theatrics from Irish

There were a few t that were missed tbh.
However they were marginal.

Quite. No option but to drop the tackle height now
We could try longer bans too. When the average is 2 - 3 week, depending on whether or not the player has already been through the nonsense 'tackle school' - there's really not a huge amount of deterrent.
Farrell got 4 weeks for his 4th offence FFS.

It probably doesn’t matter in terms of the right penalty, but I wonder if it affects the psychology / severity of saying THAT will not be tolerated, he’s off?
Certainly lessens the drama from a viewer perspective. :)

Yup, until they actually are forced to start coaching it differently by lowering the height teams are obviously deciding it’s worth the risk

Just rewound to the yellow card tackle. How the hell did Dickson not call a pen in real time. He is right there.

Which is, in fairness, the point. The baying for cards was clearly influencing refs and taking forever

I think it will
1. longer suspensions are likely to lead to a need for even bigger squads. Clubs can’t afford that now so pressure from above to change tackle height
2. Players who get banned will get either penalty clauses in contracts or they won’t get contracts at all. Can’t pay expensive players to sit on the pine nowadays.

I think it was better for the decision to be made at the time with the officials talking through the process. Even if it wasn't 100% right (and neither has the bunker been so far) the audience were at least privy to the rationale. The TMO making the decision and then just announcing to the ref whehter something stays yellow or red, is much more opaque.

Prep yourself as soon as the WC is over. Was listening to Dr Ross Tucker’s podcast a couple of weeks ago and he hinted at a WR announcement he wasn’t allowed to reveal. His co-host didn’t dig but I bet it’s a global tackle height drop (sternum would be my guess, if it happens).

How is that not just a straight red, about as clear cut as they get
I read elsewhere that barring an obvious punch/gouge etc, refs have been directed to use the bunker.
Saw it mentioned and doubted it, but the person saying it was pretty sure. I haven't seen the official guidelines to that effect, though.

Unbelievable. No credibility in that decision at all. Ritchie dropped his height as soon as he received the ball and took a couple of steps before he was hit. Disgraceful decision,

I don’t see how this will solve anything. People aren’t hitting high because the rules permit it, they’re hitting high because it’s inherently advantageous in this sport. In fact, I can’t see how this won’t mean MORE cards and endlessly bickering about how much sanction every single contact should warrant.

That’s the point, coaches have decided it’s worth the risk to keep hitting that high. Lower the permitted height and it won’t be near the head even if it’s slightly illegal
