Language is always interesting.

I had no idea ponce had anything to do with working girls or their earnings. Only ever heard it used in a homophobic way or at the very least to point someone out who was particularly camp.

Clearly varies by where you reside/grew up though by the look of it.

I’ve heard it in the context of someone who is a bit flashed up, a bit of a dandy, a bit lah-de-dah. If I heard it I wouldn’t necessarily go straight to it being a venomous homophobic insult.

A Ponce meant a flash git when I was growing up, and agree that 'to Ponce something' was scrounging.

Poncy means pretentious. I don't think it is homophobic.

Ponce was just a synonym for poof where I grew up. Should it be a ban worthy word, probably not, but I found bimboman an incredibly tedious poster with a special knack for derailing otherwise interesting threads. I suspect that opinion is shared by some of the mods.

Language point is interesting: I only knew of the homosexual noun and cadging verb meanings. Nonetheless, the irony of poncing a fag off someone was completely lost on me!
