New Zealand: 1 Tom Latham, 2 Will Young (debut), 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 Tom Blundell, 7 Daryl Mitchell, 8 Kyle Jamieson, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Neil Wagner, 11 Trent Boult.

West Indies: 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 John Campbell, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Jermaine Blackwood, 5 Sharmarh Brooks, 6 Roston Chase, 7 Shane Dowrich, 8 Jason Holder, 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Shannon Gabriel.

An all pace attack is always a little risky, but Santner's test game doesn't exactly scream 'pick me'.

Important first session as always as the pitch looks green as.

Young gets a reprieve on 1 - throught the cordon.

LBW next ball though

Not much of a debut for Young. Dropped then plum the next ball. Hopefully better things to come for him.

Tend to think 275-325 would be about par on this type of pitch.

I was worried that his nerves would lead him to call for a review.

This used to be a prick of a ground to bowl on but the new clay has really encouraged fast bowlers who put in the effort.

Spinners graveyard because the pitch doesn't break up now (like it used to)

Man this pitch looks green. Barely an difference in colour between the wicket and the adjacent grass.

I like it, there was a long chat yesterday in the Aus v India ODI about the lack of fairness in Australian pitches of late. Majority of people agree we don't want 500+ runs in a day, we want even battles between batsman and bowlers. I'm sick of the massive advantage batsman have in the modern game. Something like 26 of the last 28 ODI's in Australia, the man of the match has been a batsman.

Boom - your boundaries sir.

This pitch is one where you are never "in" so you have to be patient. 350 is a very good score but to get there we have to wear them down.

As a bowler, if you just try to put the ball on a line and length you'll get no reward - it's all about effort here. Always has been.

Too often Windies bowlers have not maintained a line that forces the batsmen to play.

Didn't Latham nick that? Yes, he did.

Windies did not appeal for it so he stays.

Sounded pretty clear and the replays confirmed it. Very strange one that, only WI player was interested. Latham will take it I'm sure.

99-1 is a fantastic result on that pitch after being put in. Could easily find yourself 75-4 on a greentop like that.

Admirable restraint here from Williamson attempting to see out a session on 49.

Not been able to watch, is the pitch a proper green top or a nz of last few years green top?

The old psyche out visiting batsman with the amount of green grass but then it turns out it doesn't move at all and we need Wagner to bounce everyone out?

Lovely bit of repartee on cricinfo.
Bhakta Prasad: "I wished to sleep after seeing his 50. But I guess Williamson doesn't want me to sleep."

- Bhakta, we don't sleep when Kane is batting. Forbidden.

NZ ends Day 1 on 243/2 with Kane just 3 runs shy of his 22nd test hundred.

That'll do.

Correct for kick-off time SAM.

Some high cloud but no wind and could get nice and warm today. Full day ahead.

Another failure for Nicholls. He has shown he can perform at this level but with Conway now an option, the pressure will be mounting.
