Abe, former Japanese PM, has been shot and is apparently close to death. He was shot with a shotgun while giving a public speech

It is not widely known but two PMs were assassinated at Tokyo Station in the period between the WWs.

If it's not Temple of the Golden Pavilion, no. That was decades ago, and I've had no desire to read another one since. Left me cold.

I never really liked that one either. My nomination is Sea of Fertility, a quartet comprising Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, Temple of Dawn, and the Decay of the Angel. It covers the changes in Japanese society through the 1900s and he committed suicide after handing in the final text to his editor/publisher, feeling he had nothing left to give.

His suicide took on a life of its own, as he probably intended. Some sort of warped legacy that's really not worth dwelling on, imho.

His works offer a fascinating insight into the psyche of Japan through an incredibly turbulent era and are valuable for that alone. On top of it is his brilliant use of the Japanese language, probably on the same sort of level as James Joyce or Nabokov's use of English.

The suspect apparently told police that he intended to kill Abe but that he did not have any particular issue with Abe's political views, other than some vague undefined dissatisfaction with Abe.

Watching the NASA Webb feed. So far wondering if any picture will be better for the layman (science aside) than Hubble was.

The Beebs salary report is up !

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-62133808

Fergal Keane revealed recently that he suffers from PTSD, not really surprising considering were he's spent the bulk of his career.

It must grate that his salary doesn't reflect how tough his job is, compared with what some others get paid for doing SFA.

Fergal Keane - £210,000-£214,999

Laura Kuenssberg - £260,000-£264,999
Michael Vaughan - £225,000-£229,999
Jermaine Jenas - £220,000-£224,999
Clare Balding - £205,000-£209,999
Sue Barker - £180,000-£184,999

I hope there's a special place in hell for Parking management companies !

This is the parking space they allocate to a wheelchair user, & then repeatedly fine her when she uses a, "Guest", wheelchair accessible one

That's from a few years back. Some cocktail required for that level of performance though.

Years ago, I was in Belfast for 12th. Work thing. Needed downtime on a plant to do some work and this day was the only one available.

Knew from experience to leave my car in client car park but was staying in city centre. The place was a complete mess. You couldn't walk on footpaths without stepping on fast food waste. Police everywhere. My abiding memory is the "ladies" in PVC union jack mini skirts.

I missed this part of the broadcast as we were toasting Ireland with a series of Single Malts while sobbing quietly behind my mate's fat labrador, but this is a Feel Good Story about Justin Harrison and his Runner Up Medal from the 03 RWC

In her ruling, obtained by the PA news agency, Mrs Justice Steyn said it was "likely" that Rebekah Vardy's then-agent, Caroline Watt, "undertook the direct act" of passing the information to The Sun newspaper.

"Nonetheless, the evidence... clearly shows, in my view, that Mrs Vardy knew of and condoned this behaviour, actively engaging in it by directing Ms Watt to the private Instagram account, sending her screenshots of Mrs Rooney's posts, drawing attention to items of potential interest to the press, and answering additional queries raised by the press via Ms Watt," she added.

Mrs Justice Steyn continued: "In my judgment, the conclusions that I have reached as to the extent to which the claimant engaged in disclosing to the Sun information to which she only had access as a permitted follower of an Instagram account which she knew, and Mrs Rooney repeatedly asserted, was private, suffice to show the single meaning is substantially true."

I haven’t seen anything about a costs order yet, but it’s quite possible Vardey will have to pay Rooney’s costs as well her own. As well as trashing her own reputation she could find herself having to pay out a few million in lawyers fees.

Proceeding with the case and then lying through her teeth throughout the trial demonstrates weapons grade stupidity on her part.
