I see young Jacob Bethell is included in the white ball squad.
Interesting lad who I know a bit. His dad sent him away from the West Indies because of the racism in the game over there meaning he wasn't going to get anywhere near the pathways etc. I've seen a few videos of him practising at home from a young age (a friend of mine is best mates with his dad) and it's absolutely incredible. Apparently has been expected to play for England since he was 14.
I do like that England are looking to the future and not afraid to stick the young 'uns in.
Notable that Bairstow has been bombed out all squads. 35 next month and this is probably it for him (although was given a 2 year central contract). Same for Ali.

Global attention for cricketer's 0 not out off 137
An opening batsman who faced 137 balls without scoring a run in a club cricket match has said he has been getting attention from "all over the world".
Ian Bestwick faced down bowlers in a spell of attrition for Darley Abbey's 4th XI on Saturday, and finished it not out. The steely player took the approach after the opposition posted a total of 271, which left him thinking that as "we had quite a young, inexperience team... let's just see if we can protect our wickets".
It worked. Derbyshire-based Darley Abbey finished on 21-4 after 45 overs which meant the match against Mickleover 3rd XI ended in a draw - with Mr Bestwick's knock causing a stir.
The 48-year-old said the response to the match had "gone crackers".
"It's gone round the world," he said. "It has been mentioned in Australia, Pakistan, Qatar.
"I have had friend requests from around the globe."
While the teams are at the bottom of the table in Division Nine of the Derbyshire Cricket League, it felt to the batsman like he had won The Ashes.
"Our dressing room was bouncing" after the draw, he said, telling BBC Radio Derby: "[The players] were all grinning, and thought it was brilliant. It shows you how good local cricket can be."
He explained: "We had been in the field for three hours chasing leather all over the place.
"They came off and were dejected, [but] at the end it was like we had won a cup or something.
"The atmosphere in our dressing room was second to none. It was brilliant."
He added: "Towards the end it became a thing where I was determined not to score."

Have to admit I find this more than a little bizarre. I’m perfectly happy with blocking for a draw (and have done so successfully twice this season), I cannot quite work out why they didn’t make an attempt to pick up some batting points. Also can’t work out how a team can finish on 20 something after 45 overs and be buzzing.
Either they are a very very bizarre bunch of blokes or there’s more going on, a bust up between the teams etc
My immediate reaction is that the opposition had multiple ringers or overseas players who made the game into a joke.

Seems likely - I think I saw someone got 180 which may explain it

Of course, they may also have been twats, which we've all had happen to us as well!

I assumed that, but the lad who got 186 had been playing for the oppo 3s all season, highest score 52 at an average of 20, so the 186 seems to have come out of nowhere rather than being a ringer.
My assumption was that something had gone down in the first innings that really pissed Darley Abbey off, it's hard to see it as anything other than sticking two fingers up at the oppo...

Fair enough, and yes then that has to be it really. The lack of any attempt to pick up batting points is otherwise inexplicable.
Plenty of experience of blocking for a draw, it’s very challenging not to score at all! For context when I successfully saw us to one a few weeks ago I finished I think 30* off 90 or so which is more what you’d expect.
Unfortunately (and obviously speculating), the fact that so much cricket is played without umpires, neutral or otherwise, does lend itself to nonsense like this. I can see how it’s funny to have stuck two fingers up, I worry what any kids playing on either side have come away thinking

14 sixes. Some hitting.
The Darley Abbey lads in full Geoffrey Boycott mode - aside from there opener's well-publicised 'dogged' 0 off 137 their No5 scored 4 off 71
(the first link needs registration to see btw)

Yes, play-cricket going behind registration walls and crashing every Saturday has been a classic ECB ‘take a really great and useful thing and totally ruin it’ scenario

Play Cricket's always been rubbish - whoever wrote it knows shit about web programming. I have found so many security flaws in it over the years it's ridiculous. The UX continues to be atrocious. The fact that pro scorer is a windows only app is insane. Just an all round shoddy bit of work.

They’re trying to do too much with it. A system that needs to work for thousands of games a weekend that are increasingly live scored on two separate apps, that is also used for vast amounts of admin, DBS, registration, historical records etc etc.
The fact they seem pretty shocked that a system that crashes, combined with a push to score more games on an app might lead to a rise in disciplinary issues just emphasises once again that most people at the ECB have never played the sport, and those that have haven’t played since lower sixth at their minor public school.

The traffic live scoring on a Saturday is still tiny, competent web devs should not be having issues with it.

They say they did 160,000 matches in 2016. Let's assume 200,000 matches this year, 3/4 on a Saturday - 150,000 over 18 weekends == 8,333 concurrent games. Call it 10,000 to make the maths easy.
Games played at 16 overs per hour (yeah, right...) == 96 balls an hour, 1 ball every 37.5 seconds. Multiply by 10,000 == 267 balls a second. 267 writes per second should not be an issue.

And yet here we are. It’s got a lot lot worse since live streaming became semi common

I'm glad they can't count drops, fumbles and wayward throws either
I played village-level as well, and finally hung up the boots when I was clean bowled by a 13 year old.
He was on a cricket scholarship and a fantastic bowler, but he was still a 13 year old I'm grateful that's not on any accessible record.

My last game, a 14 year old midget tonked me to all parts of the ground; most humiliating spell of bowling ever. TBF he smashed the rest of the attack too, but it still hurt.

The easy accessibility of the stats is a wonder for calling your team mates’ bullshit in the bar:
‘Yeah pretty sure I scored a ton against those guys in 2014, or 80-odd at least’
*quick review*
‘You scored 34 mate’

Sri Lanka paid the price for only picking three seamers too. I would hazard a lot of those 4s and 6s were after tea yesterday and this morning. They were bowling some pies.

Don't think he'll catch Tendulkar for total runs in tests, but I think hell go past everyone else.

Scotland v Australia T20 series this week.
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in Edinburgh at the Grange. Forecast looks decent at the moment for all three days, hopefully it stays that way to get a few quid into the coffers.
I've got a spare ticket for the Saturday, £46 if anyone wants it.
