He sounds a prat. Could they not have used the first day or two back in the school to brief the kids and get them up to speed?
That's what they're doing just up the road.
He's alright really. Just misjudged this but tbf to him I guarantee he would have been hammered by the PA if he didn't do the video
Fair enough. Our PA have stayed well away from it all bar saying "for the love of God, just open in September"
A few of them were more concerned about the planning application beside the convent.

What insurance issue is there? Has their insuranxe company changed their terms and conditions? The principal is making a presumptive diagnosis that they aren’t qualified to make. The person who is qualified is saying that it’s
unlikely to be Covid. We need some common sense to get the country moving not arse covering.
So the doctor can cover his arse by saying "unlikely" but the principal has to make a definitive decision affecting the health of every other child in the school & his staff. The doctor is paid to make a judgement - let him make one.
That’s not arse covering. That’s using his clinical experience to give an informed opinion. It’s not black and white, even a covid test is not 100% accurate. Making a child who is unlikely to have Covid undergo a test just to satisfy the over cautious approach of the principal is clearly an unreasonable position as if it became commonplace in all our schools then our schools system would see huge levels of unsustainable absenteeism. I don’t think the principal has the right to exclude this student, or the right to force the student to undergo a covid test when the child’s GP doesn’t feel it is merited.
An "informed opinion" that he is unwilling to commit to paper. Sounds like covering his arse to me.
The principal is in a very difficult position. My daughter had her first day back at her school today. Already 2 teachers have been told by the HSE to go home & self-isolate for 14 days because 2 pupils have tested positive. He will have to err on the side of caution in every future case - otherwise he will have a skeleton staff. I can fully see where this principal is coming from - if the medical opinion is unclear then he has to act to maximise his staff availability.

30 in hospital, 5 in ICU and 3 being ventilated.
So a slight increase.

"So my sister in law sent her 6 year old back to school today. within an hour the school phoned to say he had a cough and needed to go home (cough is related to an issue from a few months ago and not Covid).
They phoned the doctor who confirmed that it was unlikely to be Covid and he should attend school. however he would not provide a note stating this. they phoned the school and said that the doctor was willing to speak to the principal if they phoned but could/would not provide a note. principal refused to phone and said child would not be allowed back without a doctors note."
I received an e-mail from my offspring's primary school today. It had attached a document from the HSE, outlining various procedures to be followed regarding infection control in schools.
I'll quote verbatim.
Heading: When it’s okay to send your child to school or childcare
It’s usually okay to send your child to school or childcare if they:
• have been told by a GP that their illness is caused by something else, that is not coronavirus.
Your GP will tell you when they can return to school or childcare
/ends.
This is official HSE advice/guidance.
Nothing about written guarantees etc.
Principal needs to be spoke to, he may have other instructions?

Me for example. Just wanted to be even more anonymous as there are weirdos out there. Botha touches on it with his sheep comment. There are now perceived wisdoms that aren't up for debate and if you do try and debate it e.g. Covid response, you are savaged. The usual response I get is 'did you enjoy your day out with Jim Corr' blahdy blah. It's not worth putting your head above the parapet as something as simple as saying I think we are making mistakes re Covid has you pigeon holed as a right wing nutter. I am not a right wing nutter.

I actually don't know why the schools went to such bother with pods etc.
I was in Naas at lunchtime - the kids from 3 of the secondary schools in town were hanging around in groups, no masks, no social distancing, complete mixing between different schools. It makes a farce of all of the work being done within the school boundaries.
The parents need to take responsibility.

The kids have been running around the streets playing with each other for ~ 2 months. And they will do the same this evening/weekend. Any wave of sickness amongst the kids ? Won't they have spread it to each other ? And then given it to granny back at home ? No, not from the figures.
So the virtue signalling pods and unidirectional flow marked up in schools are pointless. They are just a sop to the anxious that they are providing a degree of control over the spread of virus.
Norway's school went back in May. Completely normal with no extra measures and no wave of Covid sickness as a result.
The incidence of kids getting Covid sickness globally is tiny. Nearly always have a pre-existing sickness if there is a case. Telegraph reporting on this today.

Coming to the end of a much needed holiday and some observations:
1. Fair few GB reg cars and campervans around the South West of the country. We were keeping our distance from the family who amiably told us they got off the ferry two days previously.
2. Lot of complaints about price gouging in Killarney with food and accommodation. This could be alleviated if folk had a bit more imagination and travelled to places other than Killarney that are crying out for business.
3. Traffic in the tourist hotspots. See no 2.
4. Mask compliance in shops really good. Not many dickheads left now.

The deaths thing is interesting.
Doubt we'll get the full story on why Italy fared so much worse until we get more data after the fact but them being mad smokers is bound to have an impact.
Also, maybe we're not actually as unhealthy as we suppose we are.

Saw your earlier posts. Think you're overly focusing on the deaths figure alone. There's some nasty effects from this virus aside from the respiratory effects that are only starting to become apparent now.

We have more separation of generations.
Article I read earlier is that hospitalisations in Ireland are currently in line with stats from the start here, once you actually look at the demographics. We're seeing fewer deaths and serious cases because treatment has improved. The worry is it'll get back into the at risk group.

I somehow doubt this.
The US still spends multiples of what the UK or other countries spend per citizen on healthcare; & they get outcomes like this:
A major poultry producer — ordered shut down by local authorities in California in the wake of a deadly coronavirus outbreak — on Friday said its procedures should be sufficient to protect employees.
At least 358 workers at the Foster Farms plant in Livingston have tested positive for coronavirus — and eight have died — prompting the Merced County Department of Health to order it temporarily closed, officials said.
358 Positive cases, & 8 Deaths ????
I don't believe the 358 cases is accurate; but its very hard to argue with eight dead people; & the average age of people working in a chicken factory is low.

Here's a real; "it's an ill wind that blows no good"...
The signs are that China is in the early stages of food shortage; & this is why there's a national campaign against wasting food. The reasons are Covid, (Of Course), but also insect infestation, & climate change.
Hopefully this softens the blow to the Irish Agrifood business, of the No-Deal Brexit.
With a Billion plus consumers; if they can get a foot in the door, & win over some customers with our quality product; it won't take too much to get a foothold, & grow in a huge market.
