Am sure those hard working reliable locals not currently employed will fill those gaps seamlessly
There are allot of things you could lump at Afrikaners doors, but work ethic is not one of them.
Suspect you are missing the true meaning of my words there Chief
Hard working reliable locals = Illegal migrants from Mexico? They are being deported.

Regardless, I do have a few acquaintances that are considering it and one colleague that is leaving end of March. He was afforded the opportunity long before Trump got elected though.

Personally, I can't afford it. Even though this proclamation from the yank president makes it easier, it's still not that cheap. Also having to leave my girls behind to fend for themselves for at least a year, coming home for a few months and then heading back over for another year would break me.

Great opportunity for young single people though. Go, earn ten times you could potentially get here for driving a tractor, learn new/other ways of doing things. Come back with a solid background and enough dollars in your pocket to set you up. I don't see what's wrong with that.
It's a fucking bad idea for the rest of the country. Who's going to grow your food in the short-term?
Apparently over 10k people have already enquired about it but it's people that already work in the US and wants their families to join them.

Our politicians told us our food comes from Woolworths and Pick&Pay anyways.
And the small group of Afrikaners that might do it think they are going to the land of milk and honey, safe, high quality of living, top notch infrastructure, etc. Yet the reality is that more and more Americans are moving into gated communities do to safety fears, not to mention that 2024 had more than 400 cases of mass shootings, crumbling infrastructure, roads are deteriorating, potholes, etc., if you are a salary worker you have a lot less protection and benefits than in SA, the whole idea of saving a lot of dollars to bring back home is most likely not possible for most, 70% of the American population cannot even afford to save money and live from paycheck to paycheck or do 2 jobs. The list goes on and on (it is just another version of what you get in SA, but I guess it is more acceptable because the government is white). The USA stopped being the land of dreams in the late 80's. If someone looks to leave SA looking for better opportunities (and not racism) then there are loads of better countries than the USA. And who knows, in 4 years a new president might revoke their refugee status again and kick them out.

I imagine every rugby club in the US will be inundated with coach / player resumes ... or more than they already are, I should say (from what I've heard there's always a few applying to even Canadian jobs, paying just a few thousand honorarium, asking if they can also sponsor a work permit)

See, I read your post and thought, nice hyperbole, but no doubt the reality will be bad enough....

Just there's no hyperbole...

The number is up to 20k this morning. Anyways, I doubt that farmers focused on mass food production would be interested in this. People who own functional farms won't want to go work some yanks land for him and I doubt they will be handing out free land to refugees. It's more for your farm manager types. The guy at work went through an agency, he's a salesman with limited farm knowledge except what he learned on his parent's farm, has a heavy equipment operator's license and has done some SatNav training necessary for modern tractors. Probably going to be a tractor driver. He is going over to a 15000 hectares seasonal crop farm, over for 8 months and back here for 6. Pay is 200 dollars weekly. Accommodation and a vehicle part of the package. He had to borrow money for the trip. He has to cover the paperwork, plane ticket and a year's health insurance upfront. I believe he said the health insurance is 14k. Just to be clear, he's not going over as a refugee.

Edit: Made a mistake with the pay, it's weekly instead of fortnightly. Still a pittance if you ask me.

Health insurance was 14k apparently... and he's borrowed money to pay for it all... he's not going to earn enough to pay off his expenses by a long way...

Maybe it's supposed to be $2k? a week?

Perhaps I miss understood because it makes no sense to me either. I have another friend that went over about 5 years ago for the same type of job, he bought a home and paid it off in three years. Sent home about R50k a month. He warned that it's not easy, hard manual labour and very long hours.

I have to make sure about the pay but the guy's not in today, went to the embassy. Expenses would basically be toiletries. Food is provided as is housing and a "truck". Don't know about fuel for the "truck"

Is this person on the H2-A visa? Just reading that those are only eligible for ACA basic health coverage, not Medicaid.

Canada employs a lot of foreigners in agriculture via the Temporary Foreign Worker program, and I see that they are eligible for free healthcare and employer must pay minimum wage ($17.30/hr) so also is obliged to take out various taxes. (Though the gov FAQ page says a new arrival might want private ins as it can take some admin time to set up their provincial healthcare plan.)

Wondering now if so many go to the US because of its fame whereas Canada might be the smarter option? But maybe there’s less work due to growing seasons?

Not a troll (for once) but can anyone explain to me why there always seems to be a MAGA assumption that anything relating to public healthcare is a scam and a con ? The positive externalities of a fit and healthy populace are pretty indisputable , and nobody no matter how rich or right wing is immune for death or aging, so I just don’t get their line of reasoning.

Wonder if this movement towards ever more moronic ideas will come to an end at some point?
Rep. Buddy Carter proposes renaming Greenland to 'Red, White, and Blueland'
  • The bill empowers President Trump to negotiate the purchase or acquisition of Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.
Upon acquisition, the legislation mandates renaming Greenland to "Red, White, and Blueland."
Denmark has consistently stated that Greenland is not for sale.
ATLANTA - U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), who represents Georgia's 1st District, has introduced a bill authorizing President Trump to negotiate the purchase of Greenland from Denmark, reigniting a controversial proposal with national security and geopolitical implications.

What we know:
U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives authorizing President Donald Trump to negotiate a deal with Denmark to "purchase or otherwise acquire Greenland." Carter has even proposed a new name for the island: "Red, White, and Blueland."

Carter said in a statement:

His bill gives the Office of the Secretary of the Interior six months to update all federal documents to reflect the island’s new name if the acquisition goes through.

Carter is not alone in pushing for the U.S. to take control of Greenland. A separate bill, called the "Make Greenland Great Again Act," is backed by a dozen Republican lawmakers and similarly authorizes the president to begin negotiations with Denmark.

I'm sure that the current administration riding rough shod over native concerns in Alaska will go down a treat with the mainly native population of Greenland.

One thing I keep seeing from them is that they don't want their tax dollars paying for someone else.

... I forget where I saw a counter argument to it recently, but the person asked what's worse, putting money into a thing that everyone shares for collective healthcare, or putting money into a thing that people share for collective healthcare and also into the pockets of rich people?

In reading about the birth of Canada's healthcare system, apparently it was both insurance providers and doctors that were spreading disinfo about what it'd mean (because they enjoyed gettin' paid, y'all!), but thankfully enough people didn't buy the bullshit and voted it in (but probably because it was the mid 20th century, and it was way more difficult to get messages across).

Yes, spoke to him this morning and can confirm its H2-A. Salary works out to about $3800 a month plus overtime, he gets paid weekly though. I think many Saffas go to Canada as well, but the weather is a bit of a put down. Although this guy is going to Minnesota, so I recon he is in for a bit of a surprise when it comes to the weather.

If true, the money is very good for a Saffa. Converts to about 70k a month in SA Rands which is substantial over here. Some mentioned crime and mass shootings in the US as a letdown. But I believe those are more focused in the larger cities. I don't think guys who lean towards a life of crime wants to go fuck around on farms or ranches very much. Living in gated communities is not a new thing for Saffas anyways. We have allot of violent crime here as well and most endure it for a lot less than R70k a month.
