A good billionaire could be a good pm. Not corruptible on the same level sort of thing.
However, I'd expect such a person not to use the expenses/benefits system MPs get. I have a feeling he does?
It's all about trust at the end of it all. Sunak needs to convince Tory members he can be trusted to be the most powerful PM in living memory, "end the fairy tales" speaks to that. He's mostly totally silent, so I'm guessing he fears people start thinking "not sure I trust this guy" if he says anything. Every modern PM miraculously ends up substantially richer from the process, there's going to be a lot of opportunity for someone that wealthy that didn't exist with previous PMs.
Mordaunt is a Vote Leave liar, she cheered on the possibility of no deal. Who is winning every poll Conservative Home are doing. She needs to increase the fairy tale output to absorb the votes of candidates to the right of her when they fail, it seems Tories trust a good bed time story more than anything. I posted years back that they had become like Commies ("real Brexit has never been tried").
Truss has become the continuity Johnson candidate. The MPs backing her trust her to advance their careers. Zahawi's ridiculous leadership bid is the same thing, he's going to end up backing who he thinks can best advance his career (who he thinks will win, or failing that whoever else will tolerate him) and the cost of his support is having him in cabinet.

This should immediately disbar him from the ballot!!
Zahawi said he would be willing to offer Boris Johnson a cabinet job. Asked about this on LBC, he said:
Boris Johnson is a friend of mine of 30 years. If he wishes to serve in cabinet, I would certainly offer him a job.
Apparently Braverman said something similar yesterday. Its a transparent attempt to garner votes from the rump of Boris supporters in the Tory party in the hope that they are so stupid they will forget that its only a few days since they both called for him to resign as PM.

Did you hear the semi literate shrieking in his Breakfast interview on the beeb?
Anyhow, classic Tory croneyism. Ignore merit. "He's in because he's my chum, what."
Speaking to LBC, the newly appointed chancellor described the outgoing prime minister as "probably the most consequential prime minister of his generation".
He got that bit f**king right.

I think the flip flopping on this issue will hurt Mourdant.
I personally think that if (and it is a big if) Badenoch can get past the first round of voting, then she has a good chance of making the final 2. I think she could win the whole thing.

Dear God, I know it’s the system we’re stuck with but fewer than 200k people can impose a PM on us who’s largely untried and almost totally unknown. I know it goes against the “We elect a party, not a PM” line but maybe we should have a GE when a party decides on a new PM.

Good timing !
LONDON — Conservative leadership hopeful Liz Truss was given detailed warnings by her own officials in 2020 that post-Brexit trade pacts with Australia and New Zealand would shrink the country's farming and food sectors, newly obtained government figures reveal.
Data from the U.K.'s trade department — shared with POLITICO and prepared for both deals ahead of the launch of negotiations in 2020 — for the first time details the relative losses and gains expected for each part of the British economy before Truss, then-trade secretary and now running to replace Boris Johnson as U.K. prime minister, forged ahead with pacts that have proven highly controversial with farmers.
The disclosure has already sparked anger from the U.K.'s farming lobby, which has long argued the deals — held up as a key prize of Britain's freedom from the European Union — will hit its members hard, while campaigners argue it shows tighter scrutiny of those deals is needed.

We need a total upheaval of the way we’re governed and a written constitution. We’re in this impasse where there seems absolutely no way of achieving that. You youngsters need to have a revolution, as long as you wait until I shuffle off.

I appreciate it’s not going to bring down the price of petrol or whatever. We’ve had issues in the last few years of when Parl’t can be prorogued, when can a PM call a GE, when can you have a confidence vote in the HoC and no doubt a few etcs. Generally hasn’t been a problem in the past but when a rogue like BJ is in charge it’s a different game.

Agree. Given literacy rates amongst even graduates these days, this sounds like a recipe for removing power from the young, rather than the reverse.

If you just codified stuff like the fixed term Parliament act, made the Standards body properly independent, & stopped Politicians from marking their own homework, you'd be making good steps. I'd also completely take away the ability to hand out honours to donors & mates !
If you remove the attraction of being corrupt in office; you'll attract a lot less corrupt scumbags.

Rishi Sunak leads the first ballot in the Conservative leadership race with 88 votes
Penny Mordaunt gets 67 votes and Liz Truss secures 50 votes
Nadhim Zahawi and Jeremy Hunt fail to achieve the required 30 votes and exit the contest
Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman and Tom Tugendhat are all also in the remaining six candidates going through to another vote tomorrow

A little more detail now:
Suella Braverman came sixth in the first round of the contest with 32 votes. The minimum threshold to proceed to the next round was 30 votes, and Braverman is the lowest placed candidate to remain in the contest.
Kemi Badenoch, the former equalities minister, who came fourth securing the backing of 40 MPs in today's vote...
Tugendhat - who came fifth in today's ballot with 37 votes
Jeremy Hunt got just 18
