Aye, a shame. Is it not a Heineken owned business these days? I feel bad for anyone who loses their jobs but it doesn’t feel quite the same as an institution when it’s actually part of a foreign owned conglomerate.

It is. Another reason not to drink Heineken. Not that I needed one as it’s pish.KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 9:12 amAye, a shame. Is it not a Heineken owned business these days? And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
When I first came to Embra on 1981 I had a flat in Harrison Gardens just round the corner. Produced some great beers, Deuchers being one of their best. Another institution disappearing. You can stuff Heineken up your arse as far as I am concerned. I wonder if anyone is thinking about buying the business/facility?Biffer wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 9:51 amIt is. I’m really sad about this. Mostly because it means that Edinburgh will no longer smell like Edinburgh.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I have not been watching the 7s, but I see Scotland were 17 nil up against England at half time, then lost 19-17.
Then just to show it was not a fluke, were 12 nil up against Samoa at half time, and lost 14-12.
Scotland are currently one place out of the core group for next year and need to improve by one place to overtake Kenya over the London and Los Angeles legs. Kenya are currently one point ahead.
Edit.
There is a poster on the Glasgow site saying even Austin Healey agreed Scotland were screwed by the ref v England.

They're already committed to building at Riccarton.Slick wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 8:17 amWouldn’t be surprised if Innes & Gunn are taking a lookdpedin wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 10:49 amWhen I first came to Embra on 1981 I had a flat in Harrison Gardens just round the corner. Makes sense - home of brewing and distilling qualifications, top academics, better transport links, easier site to develop and probably grants available. Also not far from me so if there is a tasting centre ....Biffer wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 11:11 amThey're already committed to building at Riccarton.Slick wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 8:17 amWouldn’t be surprised if Innes & Gunn are taking a lookdpedin wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 10:49 am

PLans are on the Edinburgh council website if you go in to the planning section and search for brewery

Really? I’ve thought it was the brewery (previously breweries) for decades. Including many years spent living in the city. Ah well, every day’s a school day.Biffer wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 8:46 amIt does.KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 7:57 pmI’m almost certain that smell comes from the distillery at tynecastle, not the caley.

I've been told, don't quote me on this, that the smell isn't part of the distillation process per se. It is actually when they mix up the grains and yeast that have already been used to make alcohol and then dry them out to make foodstock for farm animals.Yr Alban wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 6:49 amReally? I am also fairly sure they don't actually make a specific finished drink in that distillery, it's more or less pure alcohol they make that gets blended into Famous Grouse and other blended whiskies.
Fair point. Just thought with the personal and family connections they might have a look. Although I'm sure they knew about this months ago.

Brewers/Distillers grains takes me back used to get it i 20ton tipper wagons stored in a clamp (like silage) lovely stuff, warm malty smell when feeding the cattle on a cold winter morning, Spugs loved the liquor, funny as hell watching pissed up sparrows and starling tottering round the yard.
Looked at the plans for Heriot Watt and they look impressive. With the number of lorries delivering and removing products to the new site it makes more sense to base a brewery there rather than an inner city site - cuts traffic congestion and pollution in an already busy area, etc. Also new site is being built to order and will be far cheaper and more efficient to run.Slick wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 9:28 amFair point. I also suspect the Caledonian site is now earmarked/already been sold for housing development, or even yet another student accommodation block or two - we can never get enough student flats it seems. You can probably get 50'ish 2 bed flats on that site which will retail at minimum of c£200k each. Allowing building costs of c£100k per flat including all ground works, services, utilities, etc that will still make c£5m profit before cost of land etc. Given beer sales are down during and probably post pandemic then it makes business sense.

Are they? I think I must have personally made a bit of a dent in that. My waistline certainly agrees I did.dpedin wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 9:59 amLooked at the plans for Heriot Watt and they look impressive. Beer consumption did go down quite a bit in 2020 compared to previous years. I can imagine that Friday night binge drinking and lads/lasses on the sesh contribute more to the overall totals than the regular-but-civilised-quantity habit that many of us picked up.KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 1:55 pmAre they? Absolutely, thoroughly deserves it. She is in a small group of female refs that have shown that women can undisputedly officiate men’s rugby at the top level. Strangely proud of her
All the money you made will never buy back your soul
You have to respect this first wave of female refs because there is so much pressure on them to be very good and not make mistakes. Meanwhile, the game is awash with mediocre male refs.

I have the in-laws staying so won’t see either game. Not too fussed to be honest because I expect a hiding to be handed out in both, unfortunately. Not a great sporting week for Scots in playoffs

Rory Hutchinson motm for saints today.
If he's not starting for Scotland in Argentina I'll have less than zero faith in Townsend.

Tbf he was definitely not the best Saints player on the pitch, not even top three. But Argentina would be the perfect time to start him.I like neeps wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 3:48 pm Rory Hutchinson motm for saints today.

I agree it was a bizarre choice but he's a quality player who has been as important as anyone in Saints season.JM2K6 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 4:06 pmTbf he was definitely not the best Saints player on the pitch, not even top three.
