Meant available and surplus housing, which from what I understand is practically non-existent in RoI these days. And even then, handing them over to new arrivals over people on housing waiting lists will rile people up further.CM11 wrote: ↑Thu May 18, 2023 8:24 amDon't think any of these are Ukrainians. Not a good look.
What's the endgame here? Open the door to Ukranian refugees and expect them all to leave once there is an end to the war? Or is there a labour shortage down south that they will fill?
Either way, I think you need to bring the locals with you on the journey, and not just dump a load of blokes into a rural community without housing or jobs and expect everything to be hunky dory.
The country is at saturation point with regard to accommodation. The choice is put these guys up in a disused hotel complex or have them sleep on chairs or on the street. The men mostly don't want to be there either but the alternative is worse.
Not sure what you mean by 'without housing' though.
Putting people up in hotels isn't great for communities, although probably good business for the owners.
The town I'm from has shut down a hotel purely for accomodating refugees. They also had a really cool soft play area that was very popular, so the community used to go there for Sunday carveries and let the kids run about. Now both are off limits, and the town only has 1 other hotel for guests. So I can understand why locals would be annoyed, and that's not a "far-right racist" argument, just a criticism of a poorly thought out government policy.
