Or so is almost a possibility. I don't really understand the whole process of what is going on but it appears that by next week Friday 30 April the minister for sport will gazette that Cricket South Africa will be defunded and derecognised, thus paving the way for South African cricket to no longer exist.

Just as the new format and structure of the game in local competitions was about to start. I was looking forward to that.

What is going on and will the situation be salvaged in time.

Was just reading about this mess on cricinfo. South Africa has always been such a formidable test side. I hope this gets resolved without too much more damage being done to the game there.

Oddly enough, it's not the ANC Ministers who are the villains here but the self-serving "Member's Council".

Niel Manthorpe covers it here. And here.
By the time they released a statement to justify the change of mind, two days later, the best they could come up with was that the new MOI had been handed to them at just 24 hours notice leaving them with insufficient time to absorb it and run it past their affiliated clubs and provincial board members.

Today, CSA Interim Board chairman, Stavros Nicolaou, spent almost an hour in an online press conference painstakingly walking the room through every step of the process. He illustrated, literally, the timeline of the redraft explaining that the MC had been involved in the process for over two months.

Queries and objections had been heard and dealt with, changes had been made. It was a long and arduous process, as was following it for those of us unaware and uninvolved at the time, but the detail was important. Far from having 24 hours to approve the new MOI, said Nicolaou, the MC had over two months. The slide-show appeared to illustrate that quite clearly.

...

Chief amongst the ‘good guys’ is Central Gauteng Lions president, Anne Vilas. She was the only voice arguing for an open, transparent vote at the SGM on Saturday. The only woman on the MC has been a shining light for honesty and transparency and a beacon of hope. All credit to the Lions for the mandate they gave her.

That would suit the MC perfectly: They'd be able to continue to run their own individual Kingdoms without Intervention from any National Body.

I don't know where they'd stand with the ICC and the monies derived therefrom, though. That would probably dry up as would the National teams.

Neil Manthorpe's latest blog goes into it deeper.

https://mannersoncricket.substack.com/p ... e-minister
The 12-person board of directors, which is ultimately answerable to the Members Council, includes seven members of the Members Council. Although children may not know it as ‘conflict of interest’, any 13-year-old with basic schooling could spot the problem.

The problem was also spotted by a prominent judge ten years ago. Chris Nicholson chaired a Commission of Inquiry in CSA’s administration after a financial scandal and, amongst many excellent recommendations for reform, indicated that the board should comprise a majority of independent directors.

He also stated that professional directors should be fairly compensated for their time. An independent remunerations company suggested four meetings per year at R24k each, including research and preparation time. In the last seven or eight years that annual R96k has increased to almost R400k. No change in job description. And we all know who had to approve that. It is just a single example amongst a great many which illustrate the rot which has spread through CSA’s administration for the last three years, including the appointment of a CEO who has now been dismissed and charged with corruption.

‘Rot’ isn’t my word. I borrowed it from the current Minister of Sports, Nathi Mthethwa, who lost his rag in the most serenely controlled manner at the end of last year when he led the appointment of an Interim Board to sort out the mess. Having initially agreed to the establishment of an IB, the Members Council changed its collective mind two weeks later. Mthethwa threatened to boil over but, instead, merely boiled and threatened.

“I need to state for the record that I have yet to exercise my powers of intervention accorded to me in terms of 13(5)(a) of the National Sport and Recreation Act No 110 of 1998, as amended (“the Act”). It is evident that the game of cricket is in a state of complete disarray and that my intervention in terms of the Act, would not only be warranted, but would also be justified,” he told the MC acting president Rihan Richards.

“The game has lurched from one crisis to another on an almost daily basis. Under these circumstances, I would be failing in my statutory and constitutional duty not to intervene in what is nothing other than the poor governance of a sport which is a national asset and which belongs to the people of the Republic of South Africa.

“I will not hesitate to impose the sanctions available to me in terms of the Act. I sincerely hope that it will be unnecessary for me to take such drastic steps,” he said, adding that it was imperative for the MC to ratify the appointment of the IB “…in order to get to the bottom of what is rotten in South African cricket.”

More from Neil Manthorpe:

https://mannersoncricket.substack.com/p ... mpaign=cta
After all, South Africans have become accustomed to cronyism and corruption for decades and the Zuma years have left most people concerned about the motives of politicians. Many a friend and cadre has been appointed to positions for which they were not suitable, not to mention the awarding of supply contracts.

Government intervention in sport is especially frowned upon and many lovers of cricket are understandably concerned about ulterior motives. I am instinctively one of them. Which is why I was especially keen to understand how the independent directors would be nominated and appointed.

...

Cricket lovers have nothing to fear or be nervous about with regard to the appointment of the new board. It is only the hardcore recalcitrants on the Members Council who have something to fear, and that is the overdue end of the amateur administration era.

Our cricket are on a low but there are enough talent to get back and with a good coach like Boucher. Now they throw him under the bus because of the selection of the wickey, Klaasen. Cobras wickey is also on great form but obvious they try to make this a political thing. Big Vern the culprate.

Like I posted earlier, once the vokken minister get involve the kak of qoutas and shit will turn it into a real mess.

Wish the ICC have the balls to interfere with this reverse apartheid bull shit. They should ban us.

Commission was set up a few years back to look at maladministration in CSA. They recommended a board with majority independent members. This was after the 12 man board (with 7 members also part of the Members Council) increased their yearly remuneration from R50 000 to R400 000 in a year.

The Members Council is made up of the 14 heads of provincial unions. Last year, after the scandals that emerged, the minister insisted that the recommendations of the commission be implemented, and elected an interim board to finalise a new MOI. The Members Council agreed to sign, but at the 11th hour refused to sign. This is because they want to be the majority on the new board. The minister then had to intervene in order for the MC to do what IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF GOVERNANCE OF CRICKET.

The MC has now agreed to sign the MOI, which effectively ends their disastrous reign of terror on CSA

So in short, OomPoesNeus should rather shut up than comment on things he has no clue

Thanks for that.

1. So is it correct that CSA have to report to the MC, but many of them are on both boards?

2. Why do we have a MC, why can't the CSA board be selected from respected members from our unions and they are charged with running cricket?

I'm not convinced that losing a few T20 games is a reliable indicator.
6th in the Test rankings (Sri Lanka, Windies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe below them)
5th in the ODI rankings
6th in the T20 rankings

Very much outside the top group. Shit might be overselling it - there's talent in that team. But you'd expect them to be doing better in all 3, especially Tests.

Quite correct, this is the worst we've been since coming back into cricket. Pakistan beat us comfortably in South Africa. We have always been a tough to beat at home, so that is a clear sign we are behind.

Still, I'm positive, we have some serious players, we just need our youngsters to step up and fill the gaps.

Again, apart from a number of T20s (which I don't consider a reliable indicator) and a few ODIs, we haven't played much.

I feel that our current position on those logs doesn't fairly represent the strength of the team.

Certainly if we are as shit as you are saying, then I don't think that the imposition of Players of Colour on the selectors is to blame. Which was what was being implied.

On the issue of Transformation, I'm not in favour of quotas for the National side, mainly because selecting players on race rather than ability puts us at a disadvantage against other Countries who are not required to ignore their best players to conform to any specific racial mix. (Yet!)

However, I don't have a problem with quotas at a provincial level, at least in the short term. If I watch a match at the Wanderers, a large proportion of the crowd is black and that is clearly the end result of more black players playing.

Moreover, it's less likely that they will desert the land of their birth in order to play for England.

And yet, any time a black player is selected, doubt is cast as to whether the selection is on merit.
