I was never a fan.
I never understood the hype. He was just another quota player. He was lazy. He had a poor work rate. He was not a good captain. He was made captain only to fill the demographics of our country and please our political leaders.
Before and at the 2019 RWC I called him a decidedly average player.

And I stand by all of that.


HOWEVER

Since the Lions Series he is a transformed man. He puts in HUGE shifts every Test. He carries the ball, he hits the rucks, he tackles like a demon. He is captaining the Boks really well and leading the team on the field.

I am not sure what happened to transform him, but credit must be given to him and those around him.

I second this completely. After being a big critic of him, I've become a massive fan. The last few matches he has been an outstanding player and captain. He really looks like he's enjoying himself out there too. Long may it continue

But it seems that the change in enviroment changed his game and attitude and I am one of his biggest fans currently. He deserves to lead the side...whereas before it was Duane Vermeulen getting all the credit.

Vok ja, it's obvious Sards hate him while playing for WP & Stormers who developed him as player and captain. Now he is the best next thing.

Kolisi was a good captain since leading WP.

Not sure if he captained Grey High.

He was very good for the most part between 2013-2017 but often poor during the first 2 years of his Bok captaincy. He’s always had carrying ability but went missing too often. Great to see him playing consistently well again.

Since winning the RWC I think his commitment has been unquestionable. There's been a noticeable uptick in his performances and he's 100% consistent now. He's gotten fitter, stronger and more confident is his play.

Biggest improvement has been is defensive work when wide. Being fitter has allowed him to be in the right place more often and it's shown. He's been absolutely rock solid and he draws very few penalties.

His captaincy has been solid throughout, understated at times. He picks his moments with referees well too. Best captain we've had since John Smit.

Agree on the sentiment here, he is playing and captaining really well this year. His head seems in the right place, his fitness has improved. It is what moving out of one's comfort zone can do to a person. Guys like Willemse, Bosch, ... should do the same.

I don't think that is the spirit of this thread at all. It's an appreciation of his improvement from when he was first made Bok captain to now. Even during the RWC fans (myself included) were questioning his form. But the last 6 months his improvement has been monumental.
